As I walked back down the narrow lanes, I glanced at the rows of houses that lined the streets in my neighbourhood. The cut grass and the friendly neighbours were always present and the neighbour shone in bright sunlight. Where I live, everyone is connected to each other and cares for each other's wellbeing. That connection is extremely important in our world and community. It is a privilege to be able to assist ones community and work with community members for the betterment of the world. This is one of the main reasons why I began volunteering. I had a desire to connect with my neighbour and the members in my community that live here. This is one of the reasons why I volunteer my time in many places including City of Surrey Community Events …show more content…
This was a city-wide event where individuals of the Surrey community could explore the different cultural and heritage sites in their city. I volunteered at the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara, where I directed and informed community members of our event. Through this activity, I worked with another volunteer to effectively direct community members. During this event, I spent time laying out maps of all the different venues in the city such as the museum and the temple. This helped shows community members where they were at the time and see what other sites where available to explore in. During this event, I worked collaboratively with another volunteer to direct the community members. Through this activity, I realized the importance of culture and heritage in communities and how festivals can bring members closer to …show more content…
I have had a desire since I was a young girl to read all the books in the world and absorb as much knowledge that I possibly can. My grandpa always says that "one can take anything away from an individual however, no one can take away your education". Education will stay away with an individual for the rest of their lives and it is the basis of what allows humans to understand the world around them. For me, the desire to learn about everything is so strong that this encourages me to continue my education as much as I can. Going to post secondary will provide an opportunity for me to learn and explore the world and society that surrounds me. Education and knowledge provides answers to the questions that I have about my society and I know that attending post secondary will allow me to become the individual I want to be in this world. I desire to be enrolled in post secondary as it will provide me with the essentials of life and ensure that I am ready to go out into the world and perform my absolute best. Attending post secondary will open doors for new explorations and opportunities to explore my world and community and will provide me with a chance to learn as much as I possibly can. Education is the greatest gift that I could
Last semester, I planned my first outreach event at the church. We had bounce houses, face painting, food, games, and candy. I worked so hard to get this put together and even members of the church used their own money to purchase things to make this event happened. There was door to door evangelizing going on in the surrounding neighborhoods to get the word out, and there were only two people in the community that showed up. Two people.
The Denver March Pow Wow event was fun, educational and interesting. The Pow Wow consisted of many diverse native american tribes from all over the United States, who have come to perform cultural dances, and educate others about their beliefs. The Pow Wow had many booths on the outside that sold many different but relevant goods, such as: natural medicines, jewelry, animal skin, instruments, art and music. I found it fascinating that some native americans still lived in their tribes within their home village on the reservation. Their culture is very different and many different social determinants of health affect their population. Their ethnocentric beliefs are so different compared to the western culture, not only in natural medicine and
The article called “social experiment: know thy neighbor”, author Peter Lovenheim argues that we need to make meaningful relationship with our neighbor in order to making a healthy civil society through sharing experiences and helping each other and especially for emergency situation. Even though the neighbor may provide beneficial to our lives, but I disagree with peter’s opinion because each of the examples and explanation of benefits are not appropriated to rebuild a healthy community with neighbors. First of all, people have to call 911 rather than get help from the neighbor if they have emergency situation. This is because emergency responders are professional with emergency situation and have more experience to figure out the problems legally and
The desire to further education is essential because it expands the mind of a person. College is implemented to attend a school for four plus years and hope to get a job after graduation. Without higher education there would not be any scientist or engineers in the world to continue to make society run smoother. However, it’s actually more than that, it creates long term friendship and builds independence.
In societies all around the world, young adults today - from all kinds of socioeconomic backgrounds - are feeling the pressure to pursue a post secondary education as much as they have in previous generations. This is often the influence of those individuals who have taught us everything that we know up to this point: parents, teachers, government figures, scholars, and even celebrities. It is at this time in our lives when we must begin to analyze certain elements of a post-secondary education, like what is the purpose, who benefits from an individual’s education, and who should pay for it? The answers to these and other related questions will vary between societies, between nations, and between individuals. How we perceive the objectives of post-secondary will influence the way we address the other elements, and vice versa.
I went back to school with the simple goal of getting my degree and moving ahead in my career. School, education and obtaining my degree were always important to me, since my profession requires a bachelor degree to qualify for national certification, it was a better excuses than any to finally go to college and get the degree I had always wanted. As an adult student I put a lot of pressure on myself to do everything to the best of my ability, to keep the bar high and to go above and beyond what I even expected of myself; many times over extending my self and doing too much.
People have very different reasons on why going to college and getting an education is important for them. Some people go to college because that is what is expected of them, and others go because they have nothing else better to do. However, I am interested in going to college and obtaining a good education because it will benefit my family, my country, and me.
Everyone is going to grow up, become adults, and receive responsibilities. Everyone needs a job or some form of revenue to provide for themselves and possibly other. Post-secondary helps people have better futures. Post-secondary education, in American society today, allows everyone with the ability to expand their individual knowledge and prepare them for a job after they have finished school.
The Christmas in October Program is an annual event I participated in that helps someone who is less fortunate by fixing up their home. It is a two-day event where exterior and interior work is done on a home. The program requires a company to sponsor the project, and volunteers to do the actual work. It is called Christmas in October because it takes place in October, but feels like Christmas because of its memorable effect. Participating in the Christmas in October Program was the most meaningful work I've done because of its lasting effect on me.
America has many characteristics that make it the greatest country in the world. One of those characteristics is community life. From the beginning the people of America have always been able to form strong bonds with each other. The sense of American exceptionalism through community life is not just seen in small communities, the entire country has always been able to come together not only in times of need but in times of happiness and celebration as well. Community life has played a role in American history from the beginning, at times it was a benefit and other times it was a detriment, but America’s ability to form strong bonds has always been seen and will continue to set American’s apart from other countries in the future.
Volunteering enables an individual to make a positive impact on his or her community, while empowering the individual to better his or her life. This summer, I had the opportunity to volunteer at many diverse locations. From the hospital to the local library, I truly value my experience and treasure everything it has thought me. Volunteering lets us experience and learn things that we otherwise would not have learned; volunteering opens doors for us that we may not have been able to open before. Volunteering provides us with guidance and tolerance which we may use in the future to aid us in our decisions. At first glance, volunteering may seem to only benefit those who are helped, but on a deeper level, one can realize that volunteering benefits the volunteer as much as, if not more than, those who are helped. Not only does volunteering make a difference in one’s community, but it also helps the volunteer become a smarter, happier, friendlier and more caring individual.
Commitment to community is a requirement for contemporary Americans and vital to its survival. “Love thy neighbor as thyself” is the unselfish act of sharing: from a cup of sugar to a wealth of information to the guardianship of all children involved and the protection of every individual in that said community. Whether that community consists of the “Classic Neighborhood, those with a common set of goals, or those who share a common identity” the thread that holds this matrix together is always woven into the shared identity as well as responsibility of all involved. (Redmond, 2010). A community cannot continue to exist through the will of withdrawn individuals who arms only embrace themselves and have no involvement whatsoever with neighbors one door away.
A reflection of my volunteering experience can be summarized in two words: Life-changing. It is hard to explain the feelings that occur when you involve yourself in selfless acts for your community, such as volunteering. There is a feeling in your heart that you cannot ignore, maybe it is the happiness you feel or the overflow of emotions in helping others. In other words, it is a feeling in which you want to share with others. Maybe with a friend, maybe a classmate, maybe a family member, or maybe even a stranger. Either way, spreading how life-changing volunteering can be is a great start to making a positive change in your community by simply by involving others.
Last year the college community made crosses from the leaves of the coconut branch (this idea was from Trinidad) and walked throughout the community visiting the homes and issuing the crosses. This experience, not only allowed individuals to explore their creativeness but also enhanced a better communication between the wider community and the college. In addition, the college community learns what it is like to work together to create something that is not common in all cultures but can be shared by all cultures. Likewise, the relationships experienced in the community are invigorating.
Education is not just what your major is, it is also what you learn along the way. It's about learning about life and who you are. All the while becoming specialized so that you may contribute to yourself and society. It's a journey, and for those of us fortunate enough to embark on that journey I hope that we make the most of it.
