In societies all around the world, young adults today - from all kinds of socioeconomic backgrounds - are feeling the pressure to pursue a post secondary education as much has they have in previous generations. This is often the influence of those individuals who have taught us everything that we know up to this point; parents, teachers, government figures, scholars, and even celebrities. It is at this time in our lives when we must begin to analyze certain elements of a post secondary education, like what is the purpose, who benefits from an individual’s education, and who should pay for it? The answers to these and other related questions will vary between societies, between nations, and between individuals. How we perceive the objectives This topic is addressed in many different ways all around the world, as individual countries vary on the political spectrum from one another. For example, many of the Scandinavian countries provide post secondary education at little to no cost; in North America, we see significant variances in the cost of university between Canada and the US, with the States implementing much higher costs than here. There are pros and cons to be considered for both extremes. On one hand, students in countries that provide education are likely to be less stressed about the costs associated with school, but taxation rates in those countries are typically much higher. On the other hand, students that are required to pay for their own education are more likely to apply themselves and do well in their studies, though the extreme costs make it unavailable to many people. In Canada, specifically Alberta, as mentioned in previous lectures, university students pay around 25% of the operating costs of their postsecondary institution. When all is said and done, this still accumulates to a substantial amount of money that puts most of us into debt for many years. However, I think that this requirement holds great value as an incentive to do well in school and become a well educated citizen. I also think that with the remainder of the funds coming largely from government taxation, it exemplifies not only the value that governments and societies place on education, but also the support that post secondary students can know they are receiving. University is an investment into the future, and everyone is an investor in a democratic socialist country like Canada. In recent discussions of university tuition cost, a controversial issue has been whether post-secondary education should be free or still pertain high costs. My own view is that universities should not consider complementary education because of opportunity costs, unnecessary amount of graduates, and the possibility of the purpose and quality of education being altered. And isn’t government spending of education ignoring the holistic view of other vital crisis such as the immense $18 trillion national debt? On one hand, some say college is very important because one must contribute to society. On the other hand, many question the point of wasting millions of dollars on four years or maybe more to fight for highly competitive jobs that one might not get. Louis Menand wrote an article based on education titled Re-Imagining Liberal Education. This article challenges the main thought many americans have after receiving a secondary education. Louis Menand better illustrates the reasons why a student should rethink receiving a post secondary education better than Andrew Delbanco’s three reasons to continue a person’s education.
Opponents of free post secondary education tend to believe that the establishment of free post secondary education will never happen because it will be too expensive for the federal and state governments to maintain in long-term. As a result, free post secondary education can lead to a great impact on Canadian economy, students’ success in life and environmental issues.
Studies have suggested that post-secondary education is helpful in securing better futures for students. In most cases, this education is received from a non-profit institution such as college or university. The goal of such institution is to provide skills that would allow a student to achieve employment. More importantly, colleges and universities have to allow students to be exposed to the reality of worldly contention and learn from their struggles to create educated citizens. In current time, colleges and universities are merging these ideas and some institutions are making a way for students to experience the two ideas. One university that has been teaching its students the two ideas is the College of William and Mary in Virginia. It is a university whose history shows how a college can truly prepare a student for the reality outside of school.
Once a person graduates from high school they are left with a difficult decision, wither to go to college or not. Some families this is not an option, their kid will go no matter what, but many students do not want to go to school and have so much student debt by the time they finish that they will have to pay off that they decide that college is not worth it. According to Craig Smith in his article in Education Digest he says, “too many families cannot afford to send their children to college so the student is left with making the decision on wither to go to college and collect debt or just skip college altogether” (Smith 42). He has a good point. Too many students feel like they have to pay so much yet they are not really getting much out of it. Smith later on in his article states, “We must stop balancing our state and institutional budgets on the backs of students and families” (Smith 46). Going to college should be our right and cost of tuition should not affect our decision on whether to go or not.
