He conveys the point that many students are not academically prepared for the rigorous courses that are required of a liberal education “the threshold “college readiness” score was found to be 1180 on the combined SAT math and verbal test…only about 10 percent of American 18-year-olds would achieve if they all took the SAT, in an age when more than 30 percent of 18-year-olds go to college” (238). Not only does Murray talk about how the average student is not academically prepared he also goes on to make a point that students could be choosing a college for a purely financial reason instead of choosing the path that suits their academic level in life. According to Murray, this is caused by the fact so many employers require a B.A. “Employers do not even interview applicants who do not hold a B.A. Even more brutal, the advantage conferred by the B.A. often has nothing to do with the content of the education” (245). The reason that this affects young people so much Murray believes is because “more than 90% of college students report the guidance counselors encouraged them to go to college (251). This falls along in Murrays belief that many students who are not academically prepared attended college because they are encouraged by people who may not have a full understanding of the academic standards higher education requires. Murray ultimately believes a better system needs to be put in place in

As I began to dwell more on the topic I realized that going to college has not only been one of my defining moments, it has made me who I am. With all the different classes we take Community College, we realize interests we never knew we had. My first three quarters here, I was in the Running Start program, which allowed me to graduate high school while taking college courses. I took a political science class, just to fulfill my American history credit, and I realized I love politics. I never knew I had such a passion for debating heated topics like gun control until the teacher couldn't get me to stop talking in class. psychology taught me that my weird 2-year-old isn't so weird after all. And chemistry taught me that I really don't care for science that much. So, when my friends tell me they aren't going to college because they don't know what they want to do, I ask them how are you ever going to figure it out?
It is easy to think college is not worth the cost to become better, but getting educated molds a better person, and creates happier people in the future and occasionally they become better in health (Leonhardt 25 ). Becoming a better and happier person is pleasing for everyone. Even former President Obama says “‘Education helps us be better people. It helps us be better citizens. You came to college to learn about the world and to engage with new ideas and to discover the things you're passionate about -- and maybe have a little fun’” (Procon.org). Learning and engaging in everything is a skill everyone should have, so like he said we should go to college to be able to do that. Additionally, education shows people to develop more intellectual skill and become more responsible (Pew Social and Demographic Trends). Thus said, being educated and smart is something everyone can do and college helps with that. Likewise, college can encourage someone to be more educated and happier. Reaching the point of happier and more educated is worth the cost.
