I do not believe the universe only knocks once, I believe it starts as a whisper and goes round and round till you get it. It is usually the quiet or the unexpected moments you hear it best, though still sometimes you might need several of those moments and a few reminders after that. It was in my most recent semester at school where I heard how imbalanced I truly was, and if I made it my mission to live my life in balance, to relax more and trust more, I will be more.
I went back to school with the simple goal of getting my degree and moving ahead in my career. School, education and obtaining my degree were always important to me, since my profession requires a bachelor degree to qualify for national certification, it was a better excuses than any to finally go to college and get the degree I had always wanted. As an adult student I put a lot of pressure on myself to do everything to the best of my ability, to keep the bar high and to go above and beyond what I even expected of myself; many times over extending my self and doing too much.
This recent semester I had to take a class called the “Adult Learner.” My prejudgement of this class had me determine it was going to be easy, I am an adult and a learner, done. Upon entering this class I had two choice; I could either go through the motions, or use it as an opportunity to stress less and learn more. Since it is not like me to just go through the motions, it became, what I thought, was going to be a lesson in stressing less, not getting ahead, and trusting the process. For example, I had already read our courses required reading, “the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People,” if this was the first time I was reading it, I would be reading for comprehension, however since it wa...

I decided at that moment that I would return to school and graduate with my bachelor?s degree. I made a promise to myself that I would finish my education. If I complete my education, I would make my parents proud of me. Plus, I want to be the first person on either side of my family to attend graduate school. Adults return to college primarily because they desire a higher paying career or a professional job. This could be a registered nurse, an elementary school teacher, a policeman or an attorney. It could also be an accountant, a journalist, a librarian, an interior decorator or a beautician (Smith, 2001).
Returning to College as an Adult Coming to college as an adult, we have many expectations and preconceptions of what college will or will not be. The expectations we have can influence our college life for the better or the worse. My experience since starting college has been an interesting one. People have misconceptions about college because they do not know what to expect. After doing some research, I have concluded that there are three major factors that are often misunderstood about college life.

This essay is a reflection on identifying, discussing and applying useful resources available to me as a returning adult student to help me perform and succeed in an online academic environment. There are three key areas of impact: stress, time management and wellness and throughout the essay I will reference two great articles on adult learning, my decision to join the gym and my results from the Holmes-Rahe Life Stress Inventory.5 By looking at stress, time management and wellness along with having candid feedback from my professor, helpful guidelines and support I will reflect on having resources on hand as an adult online student.
People have very different reasons on why going to college and getting an education is important for them. Some people go to college because that is what is expected of them, and others go because they have nothing else better to do. However, I am interested in going to college and obtaining a good education because it will benefit my family, my country, and me.
Noted authors, Brandon Chambers, is quoted saying, “If you are going to fear anything fear success. Think about what you are doing and when you succeed what life you will have.” There are several different reasons why I could stay home, work and not go to college; I could go to work every day and make more money for the house, it’s easier, and I would be less stressed. Now, on the other hand there are many reasons why I should go to school; such as further my education, make my family proud, and make myself proud. I am attending college for several different reasons. One reason is to further my education. I hate feeling like I don’t know something, I like being the person everyone comes to for information. Also, because I want to be better prepared for my major, I want to be better then the next person with the job credentials. I want to major in Social Work and Criminology. I dream to be a counselor or an clinical service social worker. I want to help people who need someone there for them someone who can guide them or even just talk too. Another reason is because I would be the first in I would be the first in my family to go to college. I feel in some type of way I am setting an example for my parents and my brother that they too can go back to school. Lastly is simply because I love school. I love knowing more and more each day. College is not for everyone, but I will be successful by grasping the benefits, preparing for the problems, taking heed from experts, and working on strategies to be successful.

I thought about it for months, sleepless nights, draining my energy, do I quit my job and go back to school or do I continue to work? My family has begun to suffer; my oldest child is now first grade, my youngest is four. To continue to work means working only for family insurance and to pay the daycare to raise my children. Will they ever know the joy of summer breaks before it’s too late? Are their tiny brains being overloaded with school work and not enough play and imaginative exercise? All these thoughts run, trample and muttle my initiative to get up each morning and drag myself to a job that I’m not happy with. The tempting, aroma of fresh ground coffee beans, the hot water of the mornings shower just don’t have the same effect on my alertness and desire to go to work. Money is going to be sparse we will need to get use to a new life style. The day has come; I can’t take this yo-yoing effect of dread and despair. I have to, there isn’t another way, we’ll have to make do, I’m going to quit today. The sudden realization of a decision that’s long overdue has my stomach in knots, I feel the bile rising, going to be sick, and yet my head and shoulders feel fifty pounds lighter. There is a light at the end of this long drab tunnel.
