The present GPA(Grade Point Average) of Alpha Sigma Phi Mu Chapter is at 3.3. We are ranked top four academic fraternity at the University of Washington. As many would recognize, the GPA of the Mu Chapter is at a 50 year all-time-high for the past many years. This tremendous increase in GPA within the chapter shows the rise of attention of brothers in the House toward their academic success. As the scholarship Director of the House, I personally believe in lead by examples. I show brothers in the House that a successful academic career requires consistent hard work. Some might call me a nerd because oftentimes you find me in the library studying. As an effect, one would certainly hear after dinner is “Do you want to go to the library?” Another
principle that I believe in is that one must have a goal to work toward. At the beginning of winter quarter of 2017, I asked each individual freshmens in the House to talk to their advisors about their academic goals at the University of Washington, as well as plaining out potential schedules for the next couple of years. By doing this, it shows the House truly cares what each brothers are aiming for at the U of W; ultimately, each one of us is in school to better ourselves and to increase our chances to have a brighter future. The main program that the House have in place for pledges is Study Tables. Everyday, they are required to study between 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. Even though, they might not have homework or a test to study, they are still required to be in library because this enforces the studious mentality. Unfortunately, we do not have personal tutors in the House; however, because of the academic diversity within the House, all different majors could be found within the chapter. Therefore, help is literally next door. The emphasis of the importance of studying starts with the first tour of the House that pledges. Our rush team always highlights our academic achievement in the recent years and explains the reason for such high accomplishment. After pledges move into the House would also show them by example of the urgency of studying. One of the most important things that we alarm the pledges is that if anyone who does not achieve a 3.0 or above will not be initialed after pledge quarter. That person will have to pledge again. Thus, we once again stress the point that in order to have a successful academic career studying is a main focus of the House. New members of the house will always be welcomed by dedicated brothers who want to learn and excel in all different aspects of life. The House will be inherited by excellent individuals who surpass all the obstacles, like those who raised the House GPA from 2.7 to 3.4 in recent years. In conclusion, the House is on its path to greatness and every brothers in the house are becoming the better men they are always meant to be.
Anyone can teach others from leading by example. Showing others what you can accomplish establishes confidence in others to try out their own dreams, wishes, and goals. A great example of leading by example is Gus, Clark, and Richie in the movie The Benchwarmers. These men meet Nelson, a stereotypical nerd that is bullied by baseball jocks every day just because he wants to play with them. This little boy inspires the men to show others that everyone should have the same opportunity to play baseball, no matter the skill level.
Women of Delta, especially the ladies of the Alpha Tau Chapter, excel excessively in everything they accomplish and partake in from what I have seen on Southern Universities campus and in the community. Their outstanding work ethics, academics success, social friendliness, dominating attitudes, and constant need to help others is just a few explanations why I would be honored to be a lovely member of ...
Day in and day out we hear about high school and college students wanting to pursue a sorority and/or a fraternity based on the stereotypes these organizations uphold, well I chose to differ. I told myself if I ever decided to become a member of a sorority it would be based solely on their ethical standards, history, and values they are founded upon. Alpha Kappa Alpha, Incorporated consists of ladies of distinction and exemplary character who excel in scholarship, leadership, and service, which are qualities I have chosen to uphold. From my perspective, I encourage myself to maintain a respectable appearance and reputation which doing so inspires me to embrace my self-concept; which helps me confidently excel academically and professionally as a “lady of distinction” and “exemplary character.” Most importantly, I continuously remain involved in community service, being involved allows me the opportunity to learn and understand the lives and circumstances of others by opening my mind, heart, and soul. Overall these qualities strengthen my passion to be a member of the prestigious Alp...
The purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha is to promote sisterhood in colleges to assure a bond between college women, and the sorority leads by being an example for other college women to follow. Alpha Kappa Alpha also promotes higher education and positive self-esteem to younger women. Alpha Kappa Alpha also gives back to the community in community service that could range from educating our women on relevant topics to just lending a hand in the community. I want to contribute to this purpose at Mississippi State University and back in my hometown.
To me the purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated is to promote sisterhood and unity, serve the community, and build lifelong bonds. Therefore, I am seeking membership in order to be a part of a sisterhood that
The Leeds Scholars Program offers many academic benefits that I firmly believe will maximize the potential of any student. Because the Leeds Scholars Program is a rigorous process, the difference in my community of peers, the mentorship opportunities, and the specialized advising will essentially provide the proper guidance needed in order to fully succeed academically and professionally. For the reason that I have first hand experience, I have a strong belief that proper guidance is as valuable as the knowledge given in a classroom. Although I always saw myself as a scholar, coming from an underrepresented background I was always surrounded by pervasive situations. If it were not for the administration team at my high school mentoring me,
The mission of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated is to cultivate and encourage high scholastic and ethical standards, promote unity and genuine friendships among college women, aid in issues concerning girls and women in order to come up with solutions to eliminate or ease the circumstances they may face, maintain an ongoing interest in college life, while also being of service to all mankind. This sorority has not only empowered women to help others, but it
I decided to investigate what qualities the fraternities of Oklahoma State have, so I interviewed the girlfriends of several fraternity men. This gave me the chance to view other girls’ relationships in certain fraternities and if the girls’ relationships are different in each fraternity or if there are similarities. I interviewed girlfriends and fiancées of all sorts: the ones who had been there from the very beginning, before they were in a fraternity, the girlfriends who didn’t meet their partner until after the guys were already in fraternities, and the fiancées who experienced fraternity relationships from their sophomore year until their senior year.

Eliza Gray, in her article “Fraternity Row” increases the concern for women that becomes sexually assaulted on campus by fraternities. “Fraternity Row” by Eliza Gray describes the truth brought forth by many women that professes that they have been raped at the University of Virginia from a fraternity called “Phi Delta Theta.” In addition to this article, the main issue amongst fraternities are the rising cases of sexual assault that are happening on campus. In fact, Eliza gray uses several statistics to prove that fraternities are at fault for sexual misconduct. “Fraternity members are responsible for 28% of sexual assault in which victims are in capitated. Fraternity men are three times as likely to commit sexual assault. The Nation’s 800
As Shanna-Kay’s supervisor, I have seen her work with a talented group of students in way that inspires and encourages, but also challenges them to think about how they can be their best and serve the community in the most positive way. Throughout the year, she sought advice on how to best meet the needs of these students, how to empower them, and generally how to support them in their attempt to be present and a part of a community that always needs the presence of a hall council wanting to grow the
All leaders can get people to achieve, but influential leaders get people to want to achieve. That’s exactly what Erin Gruwell, an urban area English teacher did. She made the people around her want to achieve. We all need someone positive in our lives who makes us want to do better and strive for excellence when we want to give up. Eventually, we will be able to motivate ourselves. Now, Erin Gruwell fascinated me the moment I learned how she influenced the lives around her. The more I read her interviews and listened to her lectures the more captivated I became. Erin Gruwell influenced her students to graduate, started the Freedom Writer’s Diary, and trains other urban area teachers.
Growing up in Tennessee, the term "servant leadership" is a concept that I have come to know very well. The desire to put others first and to help those in time of need is what drives me to attempt to become a medical professional; however, in order to do so, I must first satisfy all educational requirements placed before me. In the event that I receive the Smith County Bank Scholarship, I would be able to focus all of my efforts on achieving my dream. Without the assistance of this scholarship, my ability to attend university would be altered; this is because I live in a low-income, single-parent household along with two other siblings. Often times, situations similar to mine are associated with failure; however, every day I strive to disprove
Whereas many challenges in student’s academic careers tend to be focused on the preparation needed to succeed, this step is what I enjoyed and actively participated in. Every week on Wednesday’s as soon as I took a step into room 202 after school, the debate workshop forum, I heard the loud objections and grunts of inspired individuals who believed they had just cracked the next great idea on how to solve world poverty or institutional racism. Starting from October of my freshmen year, without fail every Wednesday this discussion would consistently bring me back wanting to learn and hear more from my peers, the debate coach and college students who would give their two cents at times. The night before a tournament, when the clock displayed “2: 00 A.M.”, in daunting, large bold letters, and I knew that I was only half way finished with preparing, it gave me a certain sense of pride that the work I was putting in now would play a major role in my success the next day. Prior to debate, I felt that maybe the reason I wasn’t as successful as my parents wanted me to be was because I simply lacked the talent necessary. Fortunately for me, the work ethic I developed while looking to the end goal of winning rounds as a reward allowed me to better that with the right amount of effort,
