All leaders can get people to achieve, but influential leaders get people to want to achieve. That’s exactly what Erin Gruwell, an urban area English teacher did. She made the people around her want to achieve. We all need someone positive in our lives who makes us want to do better and strive for excellence when we want to give up. Eventually, we will be able to motivate ourselves. Now, Erin Gruwell fascinated me the moment I learned how she influenced the lives around her. The more I read her interviews and listened to her lectures the more captivated I became. Erin Gruwell influenced her students to graduate, started the Freedom Writer’s Diary, and trains other urban area teachers. One of the most significant things Gruwell did was influence her students to graduate. According to Erin Gruwell’s Autobiography, she had a classroom full of students who lived in racially divided communities and broken homes. Many of her students felt like an education had nothing to do with their lives. After all, they had bigger problems to worry about like if they would still be alive tomorrow. She really wanted to show them how important an education was. So, Gruwell use the Diary of Anne Frank to show them how similar their lives were to Anne. they wanted. By using these techniques, and many others, she engaged her students in reading and writing. To her satisfaction, all 150 of her students went on to graduate high school. The next significant thing Gruwell did was start the Freedom Writer’s Diary.
According to Gruwell’s interview on Atlantic.com, she wanted to share her students’ stories with other kids in their situation, and show them how they can use an education to overcome their situation. Erin Gruwell turned her students’ daily journal entries about their life struggles into a book titled, The Freedom Writer’s diary, which eventually got published. This book influenced kids across the country because they saw what an education could do, and that they can overcome any situation in their lives. In 2012, Erin Gruwell said the Freedom Writer’s Diary is the go to book in juvenile
halls. Erin Gruwell didn’t stop there, she now continues to train other urban area teachers who are in the same situation she was. According to her interview on interviewsbyspencer.com Erin Gruwell wants to teach other teachers how to engage their students into their lesson plans. Gruwell believes that today’s government is so focused on test scores; they take the passion out of teaching. She wants to bring back that passion and student-teacher relationships. According to the Freedom Writers Foundation homepage, Gruwell and the Freedom Writers have a 5-day training period where they teach the participants how to understand each student’s personal obstacles and how they can use these to engage their students to learn. After the completion, participants say they love their jobs again. In conclusion, Gruwell influenced her students to graduate, started the Freedom Writer’s Diary, and trains other urban area teachers. As college students we learn better when we can tell our instructors care about our success. Erin Gruwell didn’t just lead people to success she made them want to succeed.

Gertrude Ederle was born in New York City on October 23, 1905. She was one of five children of Henry and Anna Ederle, German immigrants who owned a butcher shop on Manhattan's Upper West Side. From a young age she was passionate about swimming, which she learned at the local public pool and at the New Jersey beach where her family spent summers. As a kid she left school to practice as an athletic swimmer. Later she joined the Women’s Swimming Association. She had her first win at the age of 16, between 1921 and 1925 holding 29 records. Ederle swam at the Olympic Games in Paris, where her freestyle team won three straight medals. In 1925, she began training to swim across live television. Twenty-one miles of water between England and the European mainland. Other men swimmers had already crossed the channel but she was trying to be the first woman to ever achieve the goal.

Leading organizations of school administrators offer educators various opportunities to encourage educators to become leaders. No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) has mandated that leaders be better prepared for the task of providing quality education to all. NCLB “… is forcing all educational stakeholders to face the weakness of contemporary school leadership and is making it impossible to ignore the need for higher quality principals” (Hale & Moorman, 2003, p.1). It is believed that all educators can be and are leaders in their own right. A leader is a visionary and has the ability to inspire others to aspire to greatness. Of the numerous opportunities that are offered, those that are most beneficial include but are not limited to leadership training programs, professional development, and creating shared leadership opportunities for teachers to become leaders. The systems “…that produce our nation’s principals are complex and interrelated – and governed by the states. Each state establishes licensing, certification and re-certification” (Hale & Moorman, 2003, p.1). States use the ISLLC standards “…as the framework for preparation programs and in service professional development of school superintendents, principals, and other leaders” (Hale & Moorman, 2003, p.3).
Erin Gruwell began her teaching career at Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, California where the school is integrated but it’s not working. Mrs. Gruwell is teaching a class fill with at-risk teenagers that are not interested in learning. But she makes not give up, instead she inspires her students to take an interest in their education and planning for their future as she assigned materials that can relate to their lives. It is my belief that anyone with a desire to change the world would be fortunate to work in education. By sharing my vision with others, and building upon my skills while seeking constant growth, I strive to take an approach to leadership that fosters an effective, nurturing educational environment for the entire school community. By creating this type of environment, as well as through embracing and enhancing my leadership strengths, it is my goal to contribute to society by inspiring people to become better not only as teachers and students, but as compassionate human beings.
Although there are many outstanding, albeit necessary qualities of a good leader, it is the leader’s beliefs in which greatness is given its first breath, fostered by action, and spread throughout the institution. A great leader believes in encouraging, not destroying; in setting the precedence instead of yielding to prominence ; in collaboration, not division; in giving, not taking; and in having high standards and volunteering to be the first of many to be held to them. A great leader does not take advantage of the people being lead, but instead, creates an advantage for the people by giving them the opportunities to lead. Only when people take ownership of an institution will passion be cultivated, action be taken, and greatness be achieved.

The film Freedom Writers directed by Richard La Gravenese is an American film based on the story of a dedicated and idealistic teacher named Erin Gruwell, who inspires and teaches her class of belligerent students that there is hope for a life outside gang violence and death. Through unconventional teaching methods and devotion, Erin eventually teaches her pupils to appreciate and desire a proper education. The film itself inquiries into several concepts regarding significant and polemical matters, such as: acceptance, racial conflict, bravery, trust and respect. Perhaps one of the more concentrated concepts of the film, which is not listed above, is the importance and worth of education. This notion is distinctly displayed through the characters of Erin, Erin’s pupils, opposing teachers, Scott and numerous other characters in the film. It is also shown and developed through the usage of specific dialogue, environment, symbolism, and other film techniques.
Since August of 2015 I have had the privilege of working with an incredible leader in Andrea Williams, principal of Theresa Bunker Elementary School. She is the epitome of a well-rounded leader who exemplifies all of the qualities of a leader as described by House’s path-goal theory of leadership. Mrs. Williams works diligently each day to create a productive work environment. She is direct when she needs to be and is extremely respected by her faculty as a fair leader.
