It all began with a childish game of jumping out of a tree into a river, a test of guts and will. All fun and games until that summer day when the star athlete is ready to jump out while his best friend follows him up the tree to jump next. The branch is shaken slightly, and suddenly the schoolÕs top athlete is lying on the ground with a broken leg. This event seems so small and feeble, but it will soon not only tear a friendship apart, but the whole school, as well.
The protagonist, Caitlin, has fallen off the top of the cheerleader's pyramid at the season's biggest football game. She also injured several other cheerleaders as she fell. She was distracted because she heard someone in the crowd yell out her sister's name. Caitlin has hated cheerleading ever since she made the team and falling from the top of the pyramid certainly didn't entice her to stick with it. Thankfully nobody was hurt too seriously but it put a damper on the entire evening.
In my interview with her, she enlightened me on her struggles, experiences, lessons, and successes which she’s taken from this treacherous sport. Chesca, as I call her, has a very different life from the average high school student. Franchesca got started in this long-term sport because of her mother, Andrea. Andrea was a gymnast when she was younger and wanted her children to be athletic like her. She therefore decided to start all five children in different sports.

When she was a little girl, Alexandra was given the nickname of Alex and (baby horse because she was fast), which was used throughout her whole life (Fishman, Jon 10). Ever since a young age, Alex has been very competitive. For example, when Alex was about three years old, she would sit in the corner playing Monopoly by herself so that she could get better and win when she played against her siblings, even though she didn’t know how to play (Becoming Alex Morgan). With Alex and her competitive attitude, she was very athletic and always wanted to be the best at everything (Becoming Alex Morgan). At around the age of eight, Alex wanted to go to the Olympics one day for the sport of soccer which she began the really progress at (Fishman, Jon 11). At the age of fourteen, Alex got serious about soccer and went from playing AYSO, Recreational soccer meaning it was
Hope Amelia Solo was born on the 30th of July in 1981 in Richland, Washington. As a young child, she was a forward for a soccer team and showed amazing potential at a young age. She scored 109 goals while in this position and was peerless. Her real career did not start until her high school years which led to her being named an All-American twice by Parade magazine. Her college accomplishments led to her being named to the 2004 Olympic team (“Hope” 1). Hope attended the Univeristy of Washington for all four years of her college career. While in college, she earned NSCAA All-American honors in her last three years. During her time spent playing for the Washington Huskies, she moved to the goalie position where her career soon took off (“Hope” 1). Hope had not considered this position before beca...

I realized that even the top gymnast of her time had trouble figuring out who she was. It came as a surprise to me when I read that she was lost after the 2008 olympic games. I thought that she knew herself better than anyone! She had just accomplished one of the biggest goal of any athlete. Her main problem is that she never thought about life after gymnastics.
"I was born for soccer, just as Beethoven was born for music," (Pelé. Hall of Fame.) was how Edson Arantes do Nascimento described his passion for soccer. He had many nicknames – “The Black Pearl”, “The King of Fútbol”, or just simply “The King.” A newspaper was once asked, “How do you spell his name?” The paper answered the question this way, “G-O-D.” We know him as Pelé (Buckley 7).

When Bailey was 6 and he had just started playing soccer. He was really awful at it. He used to kick the ball with his toe and when he dribbled it, he kicked it far in front of himself and he just ran after the ball. As the years passed and he played soccer almost every season, he got a lot better. In his second year of playing soccer, he played on a different team and he felt uncomfortable because he knew no one. His positions he played were offense and defense. When he did play, it was like he just found out what a soccer ball was. He did almost as bad as his first year. He was way too used to playing defense, so he didn’t get the chance to dribble much and he was very bad at it. When Bailey started practicing and doing drills with his dad,
I thought I was dreaming when my teammate passed me the soccer ball, I could not believe it was our last game of our soccer season. The whole time I kept telling myself to be careful and be smart with my decisions on the field. Because I was afraid that I could make a bad decision and pay the price later. I was afraid that I could break my leg again. Because every time I step on the soccer field, I’m afraid I can break my leg. I had that feeling my whole life. I can not overcome that fear. Despite the fact that I keep stepping on the soccer field is because I love soccer so much. I hope that one day I can really enjoy soccer without any worries.
In Lisa Strick essay, “So What’s so bad about Being So-So? Lisa talks about our competitive nature and the need to be the best. Sometimes competition gets in the way of us being able to following through on a hobby, sport or activity without being given the side eye because we aren’t great that activity. Stick feels as though she let her son down because she didn’t start him in soccer at an early age like the other kids. She states, “ I’m sorry, son, I guess I blew it” (p. 204). She states this after the other kids made fun of her own son; “We don’t want that dodo on our soccer team… He doesn’t know a goal kick from a head shot” (p.204). Kids can be ruthless and not care what they say. Hearing someone say that we suck can make you not want to continue to try.
