Abstract
Communication is something people tend to think they are very good at. However, there are many different factors that can help improve communication skills. Interpersonal communication is face to face but involves feelings. Being an excellent communicator can help to achieve better business relationships as well as personal relationships. Being prepared and organized are very important when speaking to a group of people. Helping a person to understand what you are trying to say will be a much more effective way to get your point across. While understanding what another person is attempting to communicate is another major factor to avoiding conflict and maintaining a successful relationship. …show more content…

Can interpersonal communication skills be taught or is it something a person is born with? Interpersonal communication can most easily be described as a face to face communication. It could be verbal or non-verbal. As a group leader, there are steps that can be made to improve communication. One of these is something that is done every day, listening. Listening may seem like an easy task, however, it something a lot of people do poorly. A good listener is someone who can pay attention, focus on the other speaker in a generous way, avoids making assumptions, and listens for feelings as well as facts. Active listening is an important factor. According to Kaczmarek and Locker (2014), “In active listening, receivers actively demonstrate that they’ve heard and understood a speaker by feeding back either the literal meaning or the emotional content or both.” (p. 291). Ways to preform active listening are paraphrasing or putting what they said into your own words, try to feel what they are feeling, let them know how you feel, ask questions if understanding them becomes difficult, offer help if they are trying to resolve a
