In this case, violations are breaches of provisions set by the institution’s codes. For example, consulting with other students even in take-away assignments when advised to avoid such actions is a violation. Because of this, the guilty students may become vulnerable to certain consequences that punish such behaviors. In most situations, especially at the Fulton School of Engineering, students found guilty of violating the school’s Academic Integrity Policy may receive zero points in examinations, projects, or homework assignments. A code of ethics is a formal document in which is used to assist members of an organization, to know what’s ‘right’ and what is ‘wrong’ in the work place and applying it to their decisions. A code of ethics is a written set of rules or guidelines to help the workers and management ‘conduct’ or direct their actions with its primary values and ethical standards. A code of ethics is important because without it, employees and management wouldn’t have guidelines and the establishment would resemble a crazy house. Consider the establishment, Dunkin Donuts. Dunkin Donuts is a food establishment well-known for their famous donuts, coffee and their slogan “America runs on Dunkin”. Without a code of ethics, the industry would most likely be extremely hard to control.
Without them, we are merely on our own to determine what is right. Some without morals may take advantage of that, which would look unjust in the eyes of the public. A code of ethics provides a guide for dealing with ethical situations which arise in the course of the job. They are not a clear cut set of rules or policies for all situations, rather a set of statements of professional belief which should inform members of the profession about the viewpoints they should consider when making a decision.
The ethics are designed to govern decision-making, govern actions and represent common ways to self-regualte conduct. Counselors accept the Code of Ethics as a Constitution that that outline a set of principles that define actions when faced with ethical dilemmas or debatable situations. All the Codes of Ethics outline specific behaviors that are required or rejected as a condition of ongoing practice. Codes of Ethics have helped some companies dig themselves out of scandals and have helped others build and maintain a solid reputation.
On a research paper, how much information can you “borrow” with or without citing the original author? How do you cite the resources you “borrowed” or quoted from the original author? Will anyone know if you submit a friend’s research paper? No one can see you taking an online test from your living room – should that change how you take a test?

In the event they build a career, they are likely to be deemed unproductive and ineffective. In fact, some of their colleagues may suggest that they earned their qualifications through doubtful means. With time, the entire institution is ridiculed, and even after the situation is rectified, it is difficult to disprove its association with academic misconduct. Therefore, it is important for universities to put in place certain regulations to ensure that all students and faculty members follow the set academic codes and principles.
Academic integrity has been a major concern among many colleges and universities across the world. Many people may ask the question: what is academic integrity? University of Missouri’s Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities (n.d.) states, “Academic integrity is the core set of values and principles that underwrites the very mission of the University itself; integrity, honesty, hard work, and the determination to translate personal and professional principles into behavior.” Some also may view academic integrity as the act of sustaining honest and rightful behavior in an academic setting that avoids, prevent and provide disciplinary actions for those who commits academic dishonesty, plagiarism and cheating of any kind. Majority of college and universities in all disciplines has academic ethics and honesty policies for all students regardless of their academic statues as undergraduate or graduate students. For example, Webster University’s Statement of Ethics (n.d.) for both graduate and undergraduate programs says, “Those who elect to partici...
Honesty and integrity are two major core Catholic and humanist values that many students in modern times seem to lack. According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, honesty is defined as "the quality of being fair and truthful." Honesty plays a huge role in our society and daily lives. Honesty is a key characteristic that makes up a person, and defines who they truly are. Usually, if a person is very honest, which according to Merriam-Webster Dictionary means, “the quality of being honest and fair.” As you can see, the definition of honesty and integrity go hand in hand. Just as Spencer Johnson tells us, “Integrity is telling myself the truth. And honesty is telling the truth to other people.” Without honesty, there is absolutely no integrity. In the past few years, many major corporations conducted tests to determine how much of the world’s population was considered, “honest.” WalletTest.com conducted an experiment in which one hundred wallets were left on the streets on purpose, filled with a good amount of cash, and a picture identification card to explicitly show who the wallet belonged to. Of those one hundred wallets, seventy four of them were returned and twenty six were not. The sample of people they used were of mixed gender, age, and race, giving a good testing sample. The results were good, showing that most people were honest, and the honest people outnumbered the dishonest people nearly three to one. Honesty and integrity does not only play a large role in daily life situations, however. Honesty and integrity play a large role in academics in different levels of expertise: Elementary, High School, and College.
Academic integrity means to act with honesty, truth, fairness, and respect. When entering college and the work force, it is important to realize there will be choices to make. Choosing to have integrity will determine the future and values one will hold. When a person commits to these values of honesty, truth, fairness, respect, and responsibility, this person will achieve an ethical code that will insure students are accomplishing academic success and failures fairly. Creating authentic work, being on time in the class room as well as for assignments are a few examples of academic integrity.

The failure of our education system is demonstrated by the fact that students are sacrificing their integrity for a handful of points on an assessment. Despite the efforts of honor codes, scholars have become numb to their purpose; they break such a promise of honesty to themselves, their teachers, and their peers without second thought. America’s children have lost the value of trust, compromising invaluable relationships with excuses regarding societal pressure and their excessive workloads. We cannot let such actions continue; if educators continue to tolerate cheating, our world may transition into one socially, economically, and politically operated by dishonest individuals. Society’s obsession with creating good academic performers has led to the subsequent creation of deceitful children and the possibility of a fraudulent
