Jose Gonzalez, Ethan Howard, Kayla Laskowski and I met with our client Mary Rachel Keville from AMP INK on March 23, 2018. AMP INK is located at 1081 Broadway Street, Buffalo NY 14212. AMP INK is a social enterprise of Matt Urban Hope Center Hope Work Program. They provide low barrier and job experience, training, and services to help current or previous experience homelessness to develop skills to improve quality of a stable life. Throughout the process and progress, we have made, I personally felt like my team should have put enough effort communicating as much as I did. I would ask them questions about what they plan on doing; they never got in touch with me or double check if those plans would work out for AMP Ink. Through all and all, towards the end, as we got comfortable and communicated more on a daily basis, it was a stress reliever to know we were on the same page with the budget, tactics, and how to advertise their organization within the community. We figured out how to set up a time with Mary and get more information for this project, in order to combine everything together. We worked at our own pace and patiently waited for one another to be done on their part, so we could organize and make sense of what to do and talk about. When we met in class, we actually set up an effective plan for AMP Ink, including goals; which would improve and be beneficial for their organization. We discussed taking a different route in order to attract the audience they want to have, including teenagers, young adults, and advocates that are passionate about helping their community. From the beginning, our team worked collectively attempting to understand our industry, our competition, and how best to go to market with our brand and products. We focused on key areas of growth and product development. I had the distinct pleasure of contacting volunteers and writing the emails that were to be used for the tele-stars batch out request. Tele-stars were used to publicize the events to all the students and faculty through our WIU email accounts. I was also made to deliver the tele-stars batch out request forms with all the required signatures with a copy of the email with all the event information. It turned out to be a lot easier then I had originally thought. I’m not sure how I managed to get stuck doing all the communication jobs, but I enjoyed them. Janine supplied us with a list of volunteers who had expressed interest in helping with the coordination and planning of the Women’s Voices Open Mic Nights. I would like to point out that both teams have spent many hours and team effort, money only to find out the job went to a competitor. It is clear that we as a team, if we make the budget numbers that we both provided, we are doing this project. I was thinking about calling a meeting to update you on the follow up of our discussion regarding the AeTB processes. I had a few discussion with Ann and Heidi regarding the pros and cons and other aspects of the “business need” as currently identified. The following was decided regarding the startup of the processes.
We had to do 2 listing tasks. First we listed the most appropriate goals to govern the best developmental group experiences in order to maximize social development in a democratic society. This was hard, we spent much of the time trying to understand the meaning of what we were listing. There was much back and forth negotiation before we reached somewhat of a consensus. Every member was really engaged although a few members were more vocal and therefore driving the direction of the discussion. The second list was to name clubs and civic organizations. This was easily rattled off. Some of the members took on a bored attitude even disengaging and checking their phones there were more side conversations and joking around. One of our difficulties was merging two group ideas together. Jessica wanted to work with women who were just released from jail, and Anna and I wanted to work with veterans who had psychological issues after coming home from war. After meeting, we were able to brainstorm and combine our ideas to form an even better topic, homeless women and children. In building our video, we realized that each group member had their own strength. My strength was editing and rephrasing the paper we wrote to make it sound like a video. I was able to change an informational paper into a persuasive script. During this process, I struggled with keeping the other group members’ viewpoints in mind. This is where it would have been easier to work alone, but for the majority of the project having a group was extremely beneficial. Another issue I faced while recording the first time, I used one long recording, so when we went to revise the audio, I had to start from scratch. We were a group of people with a vision working towards a common goal. The building of our team was complicated. We negotiated roles and tasks according to our strengths and interests. We worked well together, but far from perfect. Through varies conflicts ideas were exchanged and meaningful productivity resulted (Porter, 2003). Good communication resulted from trust and respect. All members shared an equal participation which made it easier for each individual to contribute to the success of Week 3.
Kyle Marrero stated, “communication by itself without tactical outcomes does not work” (K.Marrero, personal communication, April 27, 2015). He understands that there can be an inadequacy to downward communication. In his vision for UWG he notes that an, “organization must foster an environment of upward communication” (K.Marrero, personal communication, April 27, 2015). In higher education there can be a culture where faculty and staff do not feel they can speak up. This is where inadequate communication can infect the overall organizational communication. For example, when someone asks a question that we didn’t quite hear we ask for clarification. However, this often does not come into play with a downward communication focused organization. Is a plan or action item is not communicated correctly or is not well defined, no one speaks up. One other negative impact of a downward system of communication may be reflected by Marrero when he said, “would rather complain than to solve” (K.Marrero, personal communication, April 27, 2015).
