Study Skills: Studying Effectively Introduction Getting the most out of studying is very much an individual affair as each individual has a preferred studying method that produces the best results for that person. Studying by definition is the devotion of time and attention to acquire knowledge on an academic topic; thus to study “effectively” one must do so in a manner that achieves desired results. Since childhood, many individuals have been taught that the right way to study was to lock yourself in a quiet room and repeat the information over and over until you know the material. However, this technique may not work for everyone and can ultimately be counterproductive if one does not first understand what techniques are best for them. Over the next few pages we will discuss proper techniques of “effective studying” by emphasizing on study strategies to keep one self-motivated; identifying which learning styles best suite each person; how to effectively utilize tools to help one’s reading capabilities, and then finish up with some test taking preparation skills training. Study Strategies What is it that motivates an individual to learn? Why has that person gone back to school in the first place? How can one maximize their efforts to receive positive results? These are all questions that an individual should be asking of themselves when they decide to go back to school. The key to effective studying is to study smartly, which begins with the proper mindset and willingness to achieve. The following techniques are ways in which to maintain the right mindset and how to study effectively: • Staying Motivated - Motivation is the make or break deal in any academic cross-road. Make sure you have reviewed your answers and have not left anything blank. However, remember your first choice is usually the right one. Don’t over think it and stick to your gut. Conclusion It is important to understand that successful studying doesn’t happen with the flick of a switch but is instead an acquired skill that takes time. Through trial and error you will gain knowledge of what strategies work for you and how it is that you learn. Also, by utilizing the study strategies, reading rules, and the test preparation techniques indicated, chances are you’re on the right track. Just remember, a positive attitude goes a long way and no one has control over your path other than you. It is your choice to fail or to succeed, so make sure you chose correctly!
