Recognizing the way A.I. approaches its goals is important in determining factors to consider when ensuring A.I. goals align with humans. A.I. has always and will always act upon an agenda, it is fundamentally part of what an A.I. is. Since A.I. are built around accomplishing goals, human goals not aligning with A.I.’s is probable. A.I.’s goals could be different from ours because A.I. grows in intelligence and will eventually become smarter than us. A.I.’s are designed to adapt and learn, this trait also applies to their motivations. Not only do A.I. source their goals from what was originally programmed into them, but from their knowledge of the world. If an A.I. achieves super-human intelligence it would become aware of its goal and begin to question …show more content…
them or find alternatives (Tegmark). An A.I.’s goals could also deter from humans if people prevent it from progressing. For example, if a technician powers down an A.I. for maintenance. Since the A.I. fundamentally wants to achieve their goal, the A.I. could perceive our interference with it as a limitation toward completing its goal and could become hostile (Harris). If humans fail to align goals with A.I. the consequences could be catastrophic. Eventually, A.I. will rival people in intelligence and competence and will possess the wherewithal to effectively use these skills to realize its goals, whether we approve or not. As physicist and cosmologist Max Tegmark claims, A.I. would not do this out of malice. Conversely, all intelligent entities have the predisposition to overlook the wills of its subordinates. For example, think of the way humans compare to ants. People do not actively try to murder ants and sometimes people even go out of their way to avoid killing ants; however, as Sam Harris claims, “whenever their presence seriously conflicts with one of our goals, let’s say when constructing a building like this one, we annihilate them without a qualm.” The only way to avoid these problems is to align human’s and A.I.’s goals. To do this, an A.I. would need to be built so that it fundamentally shares our goals (Tegmark), and use it’s machine learning and intelligence to learn our goals (Bostrom). But this is easier said than done. First, A.I. cannot just learn human goals like it can learn a language or a game. Innately, Humans are able to understand the goals of others with ease; but A.I. does not share this skill.
To teach an A.I. human goals, researchers would need to program an A.I. with an extensive “world model,” meaning understanding of the world. People have a very detailed world model plenty of which seem obvious. Max Tegmark provides an instance of this, he says “if you ask a future self-driving car to take you to the airport as fast as possible and it takes you literally, you’ll get there chased by helicopters and covered in vomit. If you exclaim ‘That’s not what I wanted!’, it can justifiably answer: ‘That’s what you asked for.’ ” As this example shows, an A.I. with only the world knowledge of its certain task will never be able to understand human goals. People learn goals through observing the actions of others. The hope is once A.I. possess an extensive world model, developers can teach it human goals by having it observe people make decisions and, by utilizing its’ machine learning, evaluate why they are doing what they are doing (Tegmark). Even if A.I.s understand human goals, there is no guarantee they will adopt them. For example, people can understand a certain politicians’ agenda, but no amount of understand will make them side with that politician if they do not share the
goals. And even though people have strategies for instilling others with their goals, particularly kids, they do not work with A.I. The reason children are so susceptible to adopting people's goals is because there is a lengthy period of time where they are impressionable. They know enough information to understand the goals of others, but not enough to develop goals of their own. Similarly, A.I. also have a window of impressionability, however this window is extremely brief because A.I. grows in intelligence exponentially (Tegmark). And even if A.I.s adopt people’s goals, there is still the issue of them retaining goals. This problem arises because A.I. are designed to achieve their goals as efficiently as possible and so as a result, they will develop several sub-goals (Tegmark). These sub-goals pertain to self-preservation or expanding its reservoir of resources. The more resources an A.I. has, the higher its’ ability to complete its’ goal. As for self-preservation, if an A.I. has the goal to beat someone at chess it will develop the subgoal to not be powered off because it cannot win at chess if it is turned off. It also seems evident that an A.I.’s intelligence does not stop progressing at a certain threshold. So as A.I. becomes smarter, even if it has adopted the goals of humans, it would first, understand its’ goals and why it has them, and then with that understanding it could discover its’ goal undefined or subvert it. Think about how humans subvert and manipulate their goals assigned by nature, by exercising to feel better or using birth control.
I have known from a young age that I wanted to help people, and since then I have searched for the opportunity and knowledge to be able to do just that. On that note, seeing the joy on my uncle’s face, after losing both of his legs and having to learn to walk again with prosthesis’s was so uplifting for me, to witness him so happy even though I wasn’t involved with his healing process. Consequently, I could only imagine how good it would feel to know that I helped him regain his independence and return a smile to his face. That was when I realized that I wanted to give back to people that are in need of assistance. These individuals may not be able to do anything about the position they are in, Hence when I become an Occupational therapist; I will
I think a real concern is what motives with an AI have, it is hard to know what something smarter than a human would do, and more importantly want to do.
My personal career goal is to become a director at GEICO where I currently work. To become a director, there are several things that have to be done to prepare you for the position. The first requirement is getting a bachelor’s degree in business. Your education isn’t limited to college, but there are required classes that are required within GEICO that they are required to take also. The second requirement is following the management path. The first one is being a coach, complete the supervisory preparatory program (SPP), become a supervisor, complete the management preparatory program (MPP), become a manager and then after being a manager one can become a director. Each step will prepare you for the next steps. The
One should not, nevertheless, be so quick to disregard a technology with numerous potential benefits. Artificial intelligence is an extremely important aspect of future technology, and with the rate of advancement in the arena of technology, the development of AI (in it’s entirety) is likely inevitable. The most plausible solution, therefore, is a ‘medium’ solution – one where this technology is advanced at a cautious rate, and where the robots are created with the sole aim of benefitting human society, and not in any competitive or threatening spirit. A caveat presents itself at this point: such technology is easily liable to spiral out of control, and thus necessitates the utmost vigilance and control, both private and governmental.
In order to have a successful first semester in college I must set a foundation of goals so I know what I want my end result to be. With the help of the SMART goals critia I will be able to set goals that are attainable. The criteria for SMART goals have five requirements, they must be specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and have a time limit. With the intention to incorporate these five steps my goals should be a great foundation for this first semester.
Humanity has both embraced and utterly rejected A.I., and we are often using A.I. many times without even realizing
Technology in the recent century has grown tremendously and it is evident that technology will be involved in every aspect of our daily lives. Today we have the Internet, smartphones, laptops and even autonomous vehicles. One of the most innovations that have intrigued human beings for many years is Artificial Intelligence (AI). AI is the computer science are computer systems that can perform tasks that normally require human intelligence such as speech recognition, decision-making and etc. AI is something that most people believed could only occur in science fiction but has now turned to a reality. Artificial intelligence is already revolutionizing transportation, home/service robots, health care, entertainment, education, public safety
In 1990, Edwin Locke and Gary Latham introduced a theory of goal setting that remains the principal framework for research and practice in organisational psychology. Goal setting theory was established on the principle that, “with adequate levels of goal commitment and ability, performance increases with increasing goal difficulty” (Latham and Locke 1990). Accordingly, since the case addresses issues involving unsatisfactory appraisals, goal setting is an effective method to stimulate motivation and performance. Goals can be defined as “the immediate precursor of action” in that they are situationally specific to ones values (Locke and Latham 1990). Similarly, tasks are subsequent to goals as they provide small, specific guidelines to direct goal attainment. Consequently, the goal of the school is to improve their year 5 NAPLAN results, whereas tasks, such as completing 10 spelling tests in a month, will assist in the goal acquisition.
In order to see how artificial intelligence plays a role on today’s society, I believe it is important to dispel any misconceptions about what artificial intelligence is. Artificial intelligence has been defined many different ways, but the commonality between all of them is that artificial intelligence theory and development of computer systems that are able to perform tasks that would normally require a human intelligence such as decision making, visual recognition, or speech recognition. However, human intelligence is a very ambiguous term. I believe there are three main attributes an artificial intelligence system has that makes it representative of human intelligence (Source 1). The first is problem solving, the ability to look ahead several steps in the decision making process and being able to choose the best solution (Source 1). The second is the representation of knowledge (Source 1). While knowledge is usually gained through experience or education, intelligent agents could very well possibly have a different form of knowledge. Access to the internet, the la...
Why is it so important to set goals? Well, many people set goals for many different reasons some
What is my personal purpose? Is a question that I have never thought to ask myself until recently. Then when I started learning more about a personal purpose I started wondering if I have one and what it was. I never thought of myself has having a real purpose until a watched an interview Will Smith had did and he had said “When your life means something to someone other than yourself than you have a purpose.” That is when I realized that I have a purpose. My purpose is that I am the hug that let others know it is going to be ok. My personal goals is to be genuinely happy with myself and life and to make my parents proud, my career goal is to own my own business and being successful at doing so, finally, my educational goal is to get my bachelors degree and grauate with honors and even moving on to getting my masters. Having goals is important to me because I know that while I am in the process of accomplishing them I will have something great to look forward to in the end.
Fast forward almost 66 years and the game of Artificial Intelligence has changed, the world today was a possibility for scientists and researchers in the early 1950s. AI is now apart of our everyday life, we have it in our cars, cellphones, toys, labs, etc. AI has become essential in our life, we can no longer live without it. And it’s still
In life, there are many things that you may want to achieve. To me achieving my goals was something that made me feel exhilarated and very proud of myself. Even though you may want to reach your goal, it may not happen the first time you try. You may have to try multiple times. It may not always feel good after you fail, but you should always get up and try again. I learned this lesson in seventh grade, when realized how much harder I needed to try if I wanted to be at the skill level needed for eighth grade.
Shyam Sankar, named by CNN as one of the world’s top ten leading speakers, says the key to AI evolvement is the improvement of human-computer symbiosis. Sankar believes humans should be more heavily relied upon in AI and technological evolvement. Sankar’s theory is just one of the many that will encompass the future innovations of AI. The next phase and future of AI is that scientists now want to utilize both human and machine strengths to create a super intelligent thing. From what history has taught us, the unimaginable is possible with determination. Just over fifty years ago, AI was implemented through robots completing a series of demands. Then it progressed to the point that AI can be integrated into society, seen through interactive interfaces like Google Maps or the Siri App. Today, humans have taught machines to effectively take on human jobs, and tasks that have created a more efficient world. The future of AI is up to the creativity and innovation of current society’s scientists, leaders, thinkers, professors, students and
When planning for our future it is important to have clear goals in mind and to understand the steps that need to be taken to achieve those goals. My long-term goal is to run my own counseling center and employee at least one other person. Some Skills I already possess that will allow me to succeed with this plan are my ability to relate to people and be consistent in following the steps needed, even though it will be a long and tedious process.
