Do you think a healthier school lunch program is a lost cause?
For the past few years in the United States school lunches did not have healthy programs that could help kids with their nutritional balance, now in days the government is creating a new healthy program that can help schools have a better nutrition, although some schools are rejecting the new healthy program. School lunch’s in the United States need to be healthier, they are critical for the wellbeing of the majority of people from 6 to 18, and also set the pattern for a healthy lifestyle throughout adulthood. To achieve these goals, I have organize my research paper in three sections. First of all, in the United States most of the children’s need to be healthy because the food they are consuming is the energy they need for the rest of the day “when children’s don’t eat a healthy lunch, it is harder for them to concentrate in school and master the energy they need after school activities (10)”, without the dairy meal the concentration would be harder and would not have enough energy for their extracurricular activities. With this intention, making students eat healthy, schools are trying to follow the new federal lunch program in which prevents students to continue to gain weight “the new guideline is setting limits on calories and salt, phasing in more whole grains and requiring that fruit and vegetables be served daily (6)”, and this will help teach students the importance of eating
Janet Poppendieck is a professor of sociology at Hunter College in New York, and additionally she is the author of several books including her most recent Free for All: Fixing School Food in America. This book centers on America’s recent interest in whether or not our school lunches are healthy. This issue has been put into the spotlight recently through shows such as Jamie Oliver’s School Food Revolution and in the news because recent changes in the Nation School Lunch Program’s dietary guidelines. Poppendieck’s book looks at the in depth reasons into why school lunches have turned into what they are today, what challenges need to be faced in order to fix school lunches, and ultimately how our the system should be fixed. She accomplishes this by interviewing her current college students about their previous school lunch experiences, working in a school cafeteria, interviewing current school employees, and looking at the history and policies of the National School Lunch Program.

Today many college students are faced with eating a poor diet, because they do not have the money or the time to eat properly. With this in mind, I am going to research what college students are eating and how they obtain the food. To conduct this research, I will observe the food UC Irvine college students are eating for their lunchbreaks, either at work or in between classes, around the University of California at Irvine campus. One reason our school should get a new lunch menu is many students do not like the food served. For example, a survey was taken and of the 31 students 100% said they disliked the food. Throughout the United States, concern of rising health issues is a popular topic. Over a progression of many years, American fast food chains and junk food companies have risen as a common means for food replacing homemade family meals. This quick and easy habit of buying cheaply made and sold foods that lack real nutritional value has been reason for increasing health issues. This habit is seen in children just the same as adults. Children eat the quickest meal with the most sugar and fat (among other unhealthy ingredients). This habit needs to be broken to take better care of the children today. Children are eating snack cakes and other junk foods at school instead of the breakfast/lunch that is offered causing bad habits and a poor diet. The children of America are suffering from the effects of malnutrition and yet, society does not help them to better understand or give higher grade options for them to choose from. Therefore, junk food should not be allowed in schools as it imposes health risks on children, lacks requirements for the nutrition contained in them, and without offering them, children would learn many morals/lessons.

Rodd`s purpose is to educate people in America about how fast food corporations need to be better regulated in order to show how they are preventing children and high school students of making nutritious choices thus adding weight to the obesity epidemic in America. Rodd`s tone is critical and informative to aid her audience, who are mainly parents and high school students, to be aware of how fast foods are available even in schools.
