My life at whole has been very interesting. I am from many places, none that are really home. I have done many jobs since graduating high school. I have held many jobs and accomplished many things. What follows is a glimpse of what has been my life. Originally my family is from the Netherlands. All previous generations of my family were born and raised there. I was born in Africa, Yaounde, Cameroon on October 19, 1981 to be exact. I lived there with my parents till 1983, moved back to Holland for a few months then back to Africa again for a year. In 1985 we moved to Columbus, Indiana. In 1991, we moved to a small town in Illinois called Sherrard. I lived there until I joined the Marine Corps in 2000 directly out of high school. On June 18th, 2000, I left for Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) San Diego, California. Upon graduation from MCRD, I went to Marine Combat Training aboard Camp Pendleton, California followed on by Amphibious Assault Vehicle Repair Technician school in the Del Mar area of Camp Pendleton, California. I graduated my technical school on February 14, 2001 and was sent to 29 Palms, California as my first duty station with “Delta” company, 3rd AABN. I worked and lived there till I was transferred back to Del Mar area aboard Camp Pendleton with “Echo” Company, 3rd AABN. In February of 2003 I was sent to Kuwait to fight in Operation Iraqi Freedom with 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment for the liberation of Iraq from Saddam Hussein. This is just one of the many jobs I have held in my life. (Erikson, E. (1959). Identity and the life cycle. New York: International Universities Press.) The first real job I can say I had was working at Subway as a “Sandwich Artist” back in 1997. This job... ... middle of paper ... ...ne men who can take pride in what they do. Lastly, I would like to be able to complete these courses and earn my Bachelor’s degree. I am a relatively young man, a mere 28 years old. This may not seem like much but I have many places and seen many things. I have held many jobs, lived many places, made the history books at 23 years old, and started a family. I still have a long way to go in my life and still have many things to accomplish, but I have a good start on life I think. These classes will help me continue my path to success and to earn my degree. All one can do is take everything in stride and deal with the challenges life gives us one day at a time. Eritrea, a small East African country on the coast, is where my roots come from and was where my parents grew up until they fled to start a better life in the United States. The way they were raised was the way they planned on raising their children, with strong influence of the Orthodox Church and making sure that even though we didn’t live in Eritrea, we would be instilled with the customs and beliefs that they had grown up with. Having a supportive and compassionate Eritrean community also helped me be the patriotic Eritrean that I am and allow me to learn about where I come from. I’ve always been known to be a part of everything that came my way and never slowed down because for me, I enjoyed doing what I could for my community and taking the offers that were given to me since that was the only way I knew I could stick with my culture.
My family is from Cuba. My Brother, Sister, and I were born in the Untied State. My parents emigrated to the United States when they were 5 years old. My grandparents were raised in Cuba. Both of my grandparents went to school until they were in 3rd grade. Then they had to work to help their family bring food to the table.
Given away by my name, I am not an American; I was born and raised in Saigon, Vietnam - a dynamic city with over nine million people squeezed into roughly the size of south Bay Area. It was towards the end of my third year of high school that my family immigrated to the U.S. Leaving my hometown behind, at seventeen, I started a new chapter of my life.
I have often wondered what it would be like to experience the freedom of choosing my own class schedule. This has to be infinitely more stimulating and enjoyable. I am also aware that college will be significantly more challenging, but I have always found it easier to study for a class that interests me. I am willing to accept the fact that as long as I am in school, there will be required courses which may not engender excitement or enthusiasm; however, success should not be as difficult to achieve due to the maturity that is developing during this last year of high school. In addition, I have gained an understanding of the benefit of being well rounded. There is value in all classes taken. It helps to know that even my least favorite subject will contribute to the ultimate goal of personal and career development.
With college right around the corner and taking a college course gave a real sense of how college classes are going to work giving me an edge over all of the other students going to college that didn’t take a dual enrollment course. Dual enrollment was honestly one of the best decisions I made in my academic career because like what I was saying this class taught me the inner workings of how most assignment are going to be turned in, what it means to be self-reliant/ on your own have no help with assignment from your parents, experiencing a course that only a handful of assignment rather than a ton of assignment ends up making up over eighty percent of your grade (getting you to work extra hard so you won’t fail) and finally that you have to actually interact with the professor/teacher if you need help or are having trouble with an
Over the course of this class I have pieced together many things about my own life that before went unnoticed. I am now able to see things in a bit of a different light. Now that I have been introduced to the realm of psychology I understand some of the reasons for behavior around me. I have learned that there is a reason for most everything and a lot of our behaviors and mental processes can be explained through psychology. Studies have been conducted for many years to try and pinpoint the source of our behavior and it is not something that most people think about every day. Having a better understanding of why we operate the way we do will help me to better understand myself and the others around me.
As I look back on the beginning of my journey to a better career and life I can remember the weeks and months leading up to the first day of class. I remember visiting the college and speaking with an advisor to decide exactly what it was I wanted to do, and the steps it would take for me to reach my goals. I recall talking with the advisor about the requirements for my General Education credits as well my need to take a preparatory class for algebra because I scored to low on the placement exam to be allowed to take the full college level math. Along with the preparatory math class my advisor told me that I needed to take “Foundations for College Success”, which I questioned. My advisor explained that the course would lay a solid foundation for me to build my college expectations and learning on by explaining what to expect from college as well as how to handle some of the out of the ordinary roadblocks that college life would undoubtedly throw my way. I remember thinking as probably most all new students do “I don’t need this” or “This is just a filler class, it can’t possibly show me anything I don’t already know”, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. As I near the end of my time in the Foundations for College Success course I can truly say I am glad I was required to take the course as it provided me with an invaluable wealth of knowledge that will help me throughout the rest of my journey.
Overall, this has been one of my favorite classes in that I can work at my own pace, make my own deadlines (besides the due dates), and communicate with others in ways I had never done before. I am more of a hands on, face to face, confrontation kind of student,
There are two sides to a person’s family and one side of my family has been traced all the way back to slavery. My father’s side of the family originally came from a Georgia plantation. Although my father is Afro-American, his great-great-grandfather was a general who owned slaves. From Georgia my father moved to New Jersey. After settling in New Jersey, my father enlisted in the military and began his life as a military man. My mother’s side of the family is all from Puerto Rico. My grandparents moved my mother and her sister to America when they were very young. They moved to Macedonia, Illinois. When my mother got older she too enlisted in the military as a nurse. My mother met my father while they were both serving in the military in Germany. After they both finished their time in the military, my mother mov...
In terms of Personal Development I feel that the course has helped me to develop the skills I need to improve my grades, and to build my confidence.
This course has helped me in many ways, especially time management, health, and money. Instead of having a very relaxing week and then panicking at the end of the week when everything is due, this course has helped me to plan out my studies. Planning them out helps me produce higher quality work and assists me with my stress problem. One thing that has helped a lot is getting short easy assignments or parts of assignments done in short periods of extra time I have. For example, instead of turning on that TV, wait ten minutes and knock out an assignment. Another asset for myself has been setting dates to have assignments done. Although these assignments may not be due on that day, getting them done and out of the way, makes more time for other
I took this class because it aligns with other studies I have done. I have completed life coaching certificates and other psychology and mental classes. My expectations for this class are to learn what it means to educate and be educated. In life and business, I can see where understanding individual and/or group motivations can help show the bigger picture and give ideas on how to proceed.
Immediately after graduating high school I was not ready to attend college. I had little direction and was unsure what career I wanted to pursue. The majority of my concern stemmed from the cost of college tuition. My parents shared this concern and asked that I pursue other options. I had never considered the military until a close friend suggested the Coast Guard after laughing off my extravagant plan to become a lifeguard on the beaches of California at age eighteen. I was yearning to leave Ohio for California. Six months later, newly graduated from boot camp I left for the USCGC Sherman, a 378-ft high endurance cutter out of Alameda, Ca.
My life is a mixture of moments, some happy moments and others not so much, but regardless, these moments have made me the person that I am today and I don’t regret anything that had happen. I consider myself a strong, and a very determined person, I have dreams to fill the world and I am willing to do the necessary efforts to attain those dreams. My motivations I inherit from my family, more specifically my father that I love so much; I have always
