9/11: Romeo And Juliet Tragedies

September 11, 2001 8:40 A.M. You are sitting in your office chair. Something in your gut feels bad but you don’t know what.-- Most of you know what I am talking about, the tragedy of the world trade center. You may also have read of the tragedies of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. Romeo and Juliet and the tragedies on September 11, 2001, are both considered tragedies, but what set them apart?

With every book and most tragedies there can be something, or many things, that you can learn from it. In Romeo and Juliet you can learn a lot of things, like not holding a grudge, you can’t hold back love, and you shouldn’t rush things. With 9/11 we learned the power of teamwork and heroism, and to uphold more security on planes. It’s amazing

what you can learn from your mistakes, if only you could have prevented it earlier.

In the same way, the book Romeo and Juliet, and the tragedies of 9/11, will never be forgotten. Romeo and Juliet is a book that every freshman across the U.S. has been reading for years, and it doesn’t sound like it will ever end soon. The tragedies of 9/11 will not be forgotten because it is the second and most recent terrorist attack on American soil. Also, the U.S. army had a war against the terrorist for over 10 years and thought they defeated them, but in the last few years ISIS sprung up off of what little was left of the terrorist group.

Grief is something that tragedies are associated with. Romeo and Juliet had 5 people die and the whole town grieved. Although more people died on 9/11 (approximately 2,750 people in the World Trade Centers) the whole U.S. grieved. So if you put into consideration the size of the town, Verona, grieved close to the same amount. That way, their grief was close in comparison.

Overall the 2 tragedies have their differences and similarities over grief, lasting, and what could be learned. Romeo and Juliet, and what happened on September/11/2001 are both considered tragedies in their own ways.
