“1,500 Dead in Hawaii Congress Votes War” that was the news headline on December 8, 1941 the day after the attacks on Pearl Harbor. Some drowned under piles and pieces of shipwreck. Others suffered wounds from bombs or gunshots. Still others died while in flight. The result was same, 1,500 deaths. There may not have been any headlines the morning after Romeo and Juliet’s death, but the tragedy was still the same. Both Pearl Harbor and Romeo and Juliet are stories woven with moments of death, destruction, and tragic flaws, yet glimmers of hope and a courage. You don’t have to read too far into both Romeo and Juliet or the events that took place that December day to see catastrophe. In Romeo and Juliet there were 5 people that died in the course of many days. All of these deaths were tragic, but also bloody and painful deaths. A major flaw with the United States was that they had too much trust. They believed that Japan was their friend. In fact, they had a friendly meeting with Japan right before they bombed Pearl Harbor. The attacks on Pearl Harbor took President Roosevelt and the whole nation by surprise. Tora was the Japanese code word that indicated surprise. Surprise and shock was definitely what rang across the nation. This is different to Romeo and Juliet where they were impulsive. However, you could see that the United States situation wasn’t in control of their own situation. In Romeo and Juliet their own impulsive actions caused a lot of the problems and arguably caused their death. For example, in the scene at the end where Romeo goes into the tomb to die with Juliet if he wouldn’t have jumped so quick to killing himself, he would have maybe found out that she wasn’t dead and they both would have lived.
