Mercutio To Blame In Romeo And Juliet

Tragedies are dramas based on human sufferings, where often many characters or events can be blamed for. In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the two forbidden lovers’ deaths ultimately reconcile their feuding families. Romeo and Juliet’s heartbreaking fate can be attributed to Mercutio’s disobedient behavior, Friar Lawrence, and the Capulet’s party.
Mercutio can be blamed for Romeo and Juliet’s peril because he initiated the fight with Tybalt and forced Romeo to go to the Capulet’s party. At the beginning of the play, Romeo gets invited to the Capulet’s party by a servant, unless he was a Montague. At first, Romeo did not want to go, but Mercutio eventually convinced him under the pretext that Rosaline, Romeo’s love, was going to be there. The next day, Tybalt, a Capulet, went looking for Romeo because he knew that Romeo was at the Capulet party. Instead, he stumbled upon Mercutio and Benvolio and asked them where he could find Romeo. However, Mercutio did not want to tell him and insisted on having a duel. Tybalt killed Mercutio during the fight, and Romeo kills Tybalt because he has the need to avenge his friend. Unfortunately, Prince Escalus punished Romeo by banishing him from Verona. This made Romeo and Juliet’s love

impossible because they would no longer live in the same city.
Friar Lawrence is a second person who can be blamed for Romeo and Juliet’s unfortunate death.

Friar Lawrence is responsible for Romeo and Juliet’s stronger affections for each other because he married them and therefore binding their love. Friar Lawrence also came up with a risky solution to get Romeo and Juliet together for the rest of their lives without anyone knowing. However, it consisted of faking Juliet’s death and Romeo did not know she was not actually dead, but alive. Friar Lawrence’s messenger did not tell Romeo the plan in time because Romeo had already heard of Juliet’s death and had gone to her tomb to die with her. Friar Lawrence is responsible for the star-crossed lovers’ death because of his miscalculated

planning.
One of the most significant events that caused Romeo and Juliet’s death was the Capulet party. This is where Romeo meets Juliet for the first time and forgets all about his previous crush on Rosaline. He also gets caught by Tybalt at the party and Tybalt starts yelling at him because he did not respect the restriction of Montagues on Capulet grounds. However, Lord Capulet intervenes and embarrasses Tybalt in front of everyone by saying that Romeo is not a troublemaker and he is welcome as long as he respects the rules. This angers Tybalt and he seeks revenge the next day. If Romeo had never gone to the party, he would have never met Juliet and angered Tybalt.
Had Mercutio never fought with Tybalt, Friar Lawrence never married Romeo and Juliet, and Romeo never gone to the Capulet party, Romeo and Juliet’s lives would have been spared. If Mercutio had never dueled with Tybalt, Romeo would have never been banished. Also, if Friar Lawrence had never married Romeo and Juliet, and never given the sleeping potion to Juliet without telling Romeo, the couple would not have died. Finally, if Romeo had never gone to the Capulet party, he would have never met Juliet. He would still be on the hopeless quest to win Rosaline’s heart and he and Juliet would still be alive to spend the rest of their days in peace.
