The Pros and Cons of Cigarette Smoking

In 2012, The Center For Disease Control(CDC) reported that “An estimated 42.1 million people, or 18.1% of all adults (aged 18 years or older), in the United States smoke cigarettes“(“Adult Cigarette Smoking in the United States: Current Estimates”). A long time ago in the 1960s, The Flintstones had a sponsor by the name of Winston cigarettes whom had television commercials depicting famous cartoon characters Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble “on break“ smoking cigarettes while their wives are doing all of the work. Back then, that wasn’t perceived in the same way had that commercial been aired today, with social media hounding every potential controversial issue the second it hits the FCC airwaves. As many people know, in the years since that time, cigarette smoking has now become the number one cause of lung cancer in the United States. Similar to gay rights and abortion, there are a number of different perspectives on the issue of smoking. In this particular research paper, there are three different points of view on cigarette smoking: There are those out there who believe that smoking reduces risk of diseases, such as Parkinson’s, there are others, who believe that smoking is therapeutic, and lastly, there are others who think that smoking is toxic to your health, and it should be banned altogether.

There are a number of reasons why there are a large number of smoking advocates on Earth. Some people believe that smoking cigarettes can reduce the risk of developing Parkinson’s disease. According to Reuter’s Health, “The researchers found that the more years a person had smoke, the lower the risk of Parkinson’s disease”(Harding 4). ...ed advocate at all. I am just stating facts, and I believe that not only should alcohol be illegal, for the horrors that it has caused with drunk driving, but also cigarettes should be as well. Once cigarettes become illegal, then electronic cigarettes should take over, and we will then start to move in a positive direction as a nation.
