Every cigarette is filled with harmful chemicals that will leave someone with health problems and cancer, wishing that they hadn’t started smoking in the first place. Smoking is a problem among most adults and sadly, teenagers. Smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer, and it is a disgusting habit. Cigarette smoking can have many negative effects: it can create health problems, financial problems, and hygiene problems.The main problem with smoking is that it can damage your health. A lifetime of smoking most likely will give someone lung cancer that will kill them. Second and Third hand smoke can inadvertently damage the health of the smoker’s friends and family. Smoking damages the teeth and gums, which can cause oral cancers. Smoking is a financial burden because cigarettes are addictive and it costs a lot of money monthly to keep up the habit. Smoking can also raise one’s health insurance, and health complications. From then, cigarettes spread like wildfire, and it was not until 1964 that anyone made a stand about the negative effects of tobacco and cigarettes. People start smoking for all different reasons, some to fit in and some to “escape”. Regardless, it is a horrible habit. 3900 children will try their first cigarette today. Amongst adults who currently smoke, 68% of them began at age 18 or younger, and 85% at 21 or younger (American Lung Association). And of all those people, 70% say if they were given another chance they would never have picked up that first cigarette (Tobacco Free Maine). Smoking is responsible for 1 and 5 deaths in the united states, and is the number one preventable cause of death (NLH). Smoking burns and there is no doubt about that, but before one picks up that cigarette, understand the negative effects on not only oneself, but others affected by ones poor choices, like second-hand smoke. Because of smoking cigarettes, many types of cancer, decrease of life quality, and negative health effects have become all too common in the world today.
Even though smoking cigarettes can lead to death and consider very bad for someone’s health, people all over the world do it every day. No matter how many cautions cigarette companies place on cigarettes packs, people still smoke. According to an article from the American Lung Association, “Health Effects” (n.d.), “Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., causing over 438,000 deaths per year”. The umbrella term for tobacco use includes the use of cigarettes, cigars, e-cigs and chewing tobacco. While tobacco causes adverse health consequences, it also has been a unifying factor for change in public health. While the tobacco industries targets specific populations, public health specifically targets smokers, possible smokers, and the public to influence cessation, policies and education.
Walking the streets of Baltimore, the smell of cigarettes was everywhere. I sat at the bus stop and this homeless guy was asking for change while smoking a cigarette. I looked at him and didn’t feel any remorse because he was smoking. I imagined giving him money I had then he will spend it on cigarettes and that will be a waste of my money. I got up and moves about ten feet away from the second hand smoke but then saw a guy selling cigarettes. He has a pack of cigarettes and he is selling two cigarettes for a dollar. In America, the most common cause of avoidable disease, illness, and death is the abuse of tobacco(). Tobacco is a plant that carries a highly addictive substance known as nicotine that creates smokers to be unable to stop the habit. Numerous chemicals within tobacco like carbon monoxide, tar and formaldehyde are all believed to be harmful to the human body and cause superb health issues (abovetheinfluence). Smoking tobacco can have extreme negative effects on physical appearance, body organs and systems and the people that surround the smoker because of the dangerous chemicals it consists of.
My first thought about cigarettes is, they are very harmful to the body and to others. As you look around at all those who smoke, they don 't care who they smoke around. Second hand smoke is just as harmful as smoking is. There are serious dangers out there that are killing people. We should be aware of these dangers and know how it can affects others as well. The dangers of smoking are that damage does not occur immediately, but after a long time. Moreover, not limited to the smoker, it affects others who are around him!
