Because there is nicotine in cigarettes, they are highly addictive. Cigarettes are one of the worlds most devastating causes of death and disease (Henningfield). There are many negative effects from secondhand smoking, both immediately and over time. Smoking also affects the environment indoors negatively. Also, when pregnant woman or parents of young children smoke, they could harm their children. People should not smoke with others around because they are exposed to harmful chemicals and they are not the one putting themselves in danger.

Walking the streets of Baltimore, the smell of cigarettes was everywhere. I sat at the bus stop and this homeless guy was asking for change while smoking a cigarette. I looked at him and didn’t feel any remorse because he was smoking. I imagined giving him money I had then he will spend it on cigarettes and that will be a waste of my money. I will provide a brief section on the history of smoking and cigarettes. I will then discuss the composition and contents of cigarettes and the biological and psychological effects of smoking.
In America, the most common cause of avoidable disease, illness, and death is the abuse of tobacco(). Tobacco is a plant that carries a highly addictive substance known as nicotine that creates smokers to be unable to stop the habit. Numerous chemicals within tobacco like carbon monoxide, tar and formaldehyde are all believed to be harmful to the human body and cause superb health issues (abovetheinfluence). Smoking tobacco can have extreme negative effects on physical appearance, body organs and systems and the people that surround the smoker because of the dangerous chemicals it consists of.
First, let us start with the effects of smoking on smoker’s body. Smoking causes lack of oxygen supply to the brain, which leads to strokes. Chemicals such as Nicotine in the cigarette, increases blood pressure and carbon monoxide causes the cholesterol deposits on the artery wall. All these add up to the increase the risk of heart attack. Increased blood pressure has marring effects on the kidneys.
