What are the obstacles to defining children’s literature?
According to Marah Gubar, “if you were to define children’s literature as literature read by children or young adults, any text could potentially count as children’s literature, including Dickens novels and pornography.” This could be a dangerous because most parents do not want their children to read pornography. Not all books labeled “children’s literature” were specifically written for children, they were labeled that way by publisher, editors or even the public. Who picks out what their child reads? Parents or guardians do, so books meant for children have to appeal to adults too. Therefore you really cannot define “children’s literature” as something a child reads because a lot of time an adult picks out a book they like and they read it, either to their children, classroom, or even children in their day care. What I pick to read to a first grader would not necessarily be what I would read to a kindergartener. So I think we should not really define children’s literature per say but just use our own judgment on what we deem appropriate for children of different ages.
Is content alone the only thing which separates children’s literature from adult literature?
No, content should not even be considered. There are books that I read that I would let children read. They are published as adult books but I find nothing offensive or politically incorrect in them. However some critics would use not just content, they use the text as in how it is written, not on what. Critics think that using some harsher language should not be used in what they define as children literature. When I say pornography I mean books that have explicit words and very explicit pictures in them, not the educational books that are used in health class that show the human body. I do not feel it is appropriate literature for their age. I do not think that they have complete understanding of the purpose of these books, which are not for their young minds.

Finding your own identity when not being exposed to any negative thought provoking subject matter is difficult. Exposing a child to such topics that are out of their comfort zones is difficult enough without having to worry how the child will take in the newfound information. As the American Library Association notes, books are usually banned "with the best intention…to protect others, frequently children, from difficult ideas and information." (Brunner). If a book has frightening or controversial ideas in them, adults willing often censor that book from children. From 2000 to 2009, of the 5,099 challenges that were reported, 1,639 of these challenges were in school libraries and 30 challenges in academic libraries. (Frequently Challenged Books). At various times in American history, even some of the tamest books have been banned. Harriet the Spy, was banned because it supposedly taught children to "lie, spy, back-talk, and curse." Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl was banned for being too depressing. People should be allowed to read whatever they want to read, even if it is a touchy subject to someone else. Although some people mainly believe in the banning of books due to explicit content, it actually causes a negative effect on people and children. Not only does it take away the people’s first amendment rights, but it also shelters children from real life situations that might affect their future. Banning books is unconstitutional and shelters children.
Recently publishing companies have focused efforts to release books that are intended for the large teenage audiences. However these books have unintentionally become popular with adult readers who have been drawn into these book franchises, such as The Hunger Games, Harry Potter, and Twilight. Critics say banning such books from libraries or attempting to keep young people from reading them is tantamount to censorship and is counterproductive. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain, 1884. The Catcher in the Rye, J.D. Salinger, 1951. Gone With the Wind, Margaret Mitchell, 1936. The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald, 1925 (www.bannedbooksweek.org). All of the books mentioned in the last sentences were books that “shaped America,” and were in some way or another banned or expurgated by taking all of the explicit words, and content, out of them. In doing so, the people who made the decisions to ban the books, or otherwise take out the content, greatly decreased the viewpoints that the author was trying to conceive. I believe that, unless the reading is for children under the age of, say, 13, then books like the aforementioned ones above, should not be banned or censored at all. Sometimes you have a rare case, like mine, where kids skip a few grades, and are really ahead of their class, and still a little immature, but if they are in a certain grade, they should be allowed to read, and understand what the author was originally trying to portray before the “people who think they know best” go and censor the author’s initial intent.
It has always been amazing to realize how well the literature I read as a child has stayed with me through the years. It takes an exceptional writer to compose a narrative that maintains a storyline on the same level of a child's understanding; it takes everything short of a miracle to keep a child's interest. However, that undertaking has been accomplished by many skilled authors, and continues to be an area of growth in the literary world. Only this year the New York Times has given the genre of children's literature the credit it deserves by creating a separate best-sellers list just for outstanding children's books. Yet, on another level, children's literature is not only for the young. I believe that the mark of a brilliant children's author is the age range of those who get pleasure from the stories; the wider the range, the better.
A Hero is somebody who makes a difference in life and impacts the lives of others around the world. The type of people that Heroes are; are people who are admired for their achievements and courageousness. A person that is a good example for this research paper is Elie Wiesel. Elie Wiesel is a hero because of the impact that he set upon the world, by speaking about all the struggles that he has faced. This has helped people to know that it is very important to stand up for what they believe in. Elie Wiesel has been considered heroic to many others because of his strength/courage to talk about and explain in detail all the difficulties that he endured. He wants people to know his story so it wont happen again. This is why Elie Wiesel is a very good example of a hero not only to myself but to millions around the world.

Children’s literature is a conservative and reading it just to escape from the harsh realities of adulthood. Literature intended for children, however, is a recent development. Though children’s literature is young, the texts can be separated into two categories by age. The exact splitting point is debatable, but as technology revolutionized in the mid-twentieth century is the dividing point between classic and contemporary. Today’s children’s literature is extraordinarily different from the classics that it evolved from, but yet as classic was transformed into modern, the literature kept many common features.
