I have a job as a hostess at a local Duluth restaurant. As a hostess I am required to greet, accommodate needs of customers, and provide customer service. I am constantly having conversations. Some are problem solving conversations and I must find a solution and assist the customer. Other times I am creating a friendly environment by engaging in small talk where I enjoy making someone’s day by smiling and being friendly. Being a hostess can bring up problems within the topic of flexibility. Small talk is an everyday conversation. It is “pervasive, non-controversial and often serves as a polite way of introducing one’s self or topic” as defined in the textbook. Small talk is just one example where flexibility plays a role in conversations I carry out. At the end of the day it is the flexibility within the conversations I engage in and the way I talk through and solve problems that show what kind of a communicator I am.

This theory has been subject to many articles and studies in the communication and social departments. Indeed, studying this theory can help us understanding human relations in interpersonal communication. Each of us has been one day confronted to uncertainty, whereas in initial encounters, or moving to a new a new place, or beginning a new work.
Throughout the semester, we have studied numerous communication theories. Their purpose is to help understand exactly what happens when we interact with others. We might not necessarily agree with all of the theories, but the idea is to develop tools to evaluate situations we may encounter. Often, when the theories are explained in the readings or lecture, it is beneficial to apply the concepts to a "real life" situation. Using this approach, I will use a situation that many of us have faced, or will face, and analyze it according to a particular communication theory.
The test relating to my communication style revealed I am a Conventional communicator. I would have to say that I would agree with the explanation of the style and see myself fitting into the category most of the time, particularly in the work place. I do feel with certain situations I can be an expressive communicator, especially when trying to get my point of view across in an argument, or giving advice to a friend. I could see myself as a strategic communicator at times when talking to patients. I would have to change my style of words into words they could understand better, like medical jargon into layman’s terms. As a whole though, more times than not, I see myself fitting into the conventional guidelines below.

Communication is something we all humans use. Communication “is the sharing of information between individuals by using speech”. People have ways of communicating some have their weaknesses in conversations and others have their strengths. When I communicate with others I feel that some things I say I do not verbalize right. I have two strengths and three weaknesses in my communicating. My three weakens in my communication are, check nonverbal feedback, to make people wrong and recognize that people understand information in different ways and my two strengths in my communication are being flexible, and take responsibility for the communication.
Aside from being an expert juggler, the ability to work well with others is a crucial part of most social interactions, as we are forced to interact with individuals in our social and personal realm. Active listening and an open dialogue are the keys to good communication. This has helped me to fulfill my obligations as a team member.
The Communication Accommodation Theory states when people interact they alter their speech to fit in or accommodate for others. CAT describes the psychological, social, and linguistic behaviors that people exhibit when communicating with each other (Coupland, Coupland, Giles, Henwood, 1988). Each individual has his or her own personality and motivation when involved in a conversation, this attribute is reflected in how the individual speaks, listens and then responds to the other person involved in the conversation. According to this theory, communication between two people can at any time be adjusted by either party in response to actual, perceived, or stereotyped expectations of the other person (Coupland, et al., 1988). This means that either party can change their communication style based on what they feel or pick up on during the conversation.
On a daily basis, we come in contact with individuals that we have to communicate with, wither it be for work purposes, educational purposes, or social practices. As active humans we cannot escape the idea of socializing or communication, therefor; we make it a daily routine who we communicate with, how we communicate with them, what we listen to and how we listen it. With this routine habits are formed, some are strengths but others are weaknesses that diminish the communication quality. It is extremely important for individuals to recognize these strengths and weakness within their communication routine. By recognizing their strengths, they are able to improve even further and use their ability to get them closer to goals they may have set for themselves. Recognizing their weaknesses is just as important if not more important.
