Exercise 1: First, please describe your preferred communication style based on the test that you just took. What surprised you? The test relating to my communication style revealed I am a Conventional communicator. I would have to say that I would agree with the explanation of the style and see myself fitting into the category most of the time, particularly in the work place. I do feel with certain situations I can be an expressive communicator, especially when trying to get my point of view across in an argument, or giving advice to a friend. I could see myself as a strategic communicator at times when talking to patients. I would have to change my style of words into words they could understand better, like medical jargon into layman’s terms. As a whole though, more times than not, I see myself fitting into the conventional guidelines below. Most leaders are Conventionals. If you are a Conventional, you generally are already a good communicator. This manager will want to make all the decisions and not want to hear other options from the team or staff. This will make working rather difficult and unbearable at times. The first thing I can do is try my hardest to gain this persons trust. I would alter my communication style to be slightly more expressive. In my dealings with this manager I would try to get right to the point, and be firm but also polite. I don’t want the manager to think I am challenging them. Perhaps they will see I mean business and don’t want to make small talk with them. This Communications Style Inventory provided an accurate reflection of my communication style for the majority of the time. I would argue my communication style is dependent on the situation. When I communicate with students, I tend to take on the role of supporter/relator. I listen to their problems and tailor my reactions to their emotions. When I am with friends, I am a promoter/socializer. I still value building those relationships, but they often do not require the emotional support the students need. Although controller and Analyzer are my lease score traits, I do use those qualities when I need to be direct or need to work by myself.

Management styles often change when new managers become experienced managers. How a person chooses to use their experience often depends on the positions that they chose to take on. The average younger baby boomer has held 11 jobs by the time they had turned 44 (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2010). These changes will often force a person to be different type of manager from when they first started. Pete Torrez (Torrez) has had multiple jobs that have led to a varied career path. He has had to adapt to make sure the communication techniques he is using are appropriate for the audience that he is addressing. The communication styles have been developed because of the career choices he has made and the people that he has associated with in the workplace. The communication style has used and is using is because of the positions he has held. Nonverbal and written communications are an important piece to how he has been able to continue growth in all his positions and career path. Influence of technology has had a great impact on how he has had to communicate with peers and employees, and as a Baby Boomer there have also been challenges. As a teacher in junior high education and manager in retail, the power of persuasion and conflict resolution has been used consistently. Although a strong communicator in many ways, there are recommendations that could help him progress and be a strong communicator.
For this report I will be studying the key communication concepts and analyses the responses and develop actions for improvement to my self. I will start with the explanations and identities of my personal style within listening and responding & Emotional Intelligence as well as make some references to these communication dimensions. Also in the report would be provided an interview to my friends to meet information about my communication style from different perspective. The Concept of Communication Style The concept of communication style has been defined by Robert Norton as "the way one verbally, nonverbally, and para verbally interacts to signal how literal meaning should be taken, interpreted, filtered, or interpreted. understood"(1996.p.229) In this, Norton has identified nine communicator styles. It is very important to understand that in everyday communication we are either the speaker or listener and it’s important that we do those jobs as best we can in order to have a healthy communication relationship. Assertive communication style describes the communicator who makes his point in a direct and clear manner. The speaker achieves it with a strong and firm voice without any counterproductive and unnecessary fillers, such as “ahs” and “ums” (Hopkins). This way, the listener is left with no doubt of what the speaker is stating and the reasons behind what is being said. Aggressive communication style, on the other hand, is common for the communicators who use a tone that is deemed by the audienc that in some cases personal, resulting in unnecessary conflict. Individuals who use this style in most cases are poor listeners and always want things to go their way.
I have a probing communication style. When I am face to face with people I often forget material I wanted to mention if it is not written down. My listening skills are good. When I am talking, if I am permitted to lead the conversation my listening skills suffer. However, if the other person does most of the talking I listen fairly well.

By conveying your message and integrating them as a member of the team and not just a subordinate leads to better production. By effectively communicating you can clearly define job responsibilities and expectations. The better you are able to communicate the less likely organizational turnover of personnel will occur. Supervisors and leaders in the professional workplace find that the most important factor in advancement and retain ability is effective communication. One of the main aspects in communicating is listening. An effective listener is one who, not only comprehends how the speaker feels but, also understands what they are stating. Building a strong connection between the speaker and the listener is one of the first steps to become a good listener. By building this connection speakers should first be in an environment with open minded listeners, it makes them feel more comfortable to state their opinions, feelings and ideas. Listeners should avoid being judgmental. The individual does not have to agree with the ideas, values or opinions of the speaker; however, to fully understand them, one must put aside their criticism.
