Remaining Mysterious: The Zodiac Killer
Continuing in the tradition of Jack the Ripper and Dusseldorf Vampire Peter Kurten, while foreshadowing BTK, The Zodiac Killer was factually a world-wide, unknown murderer for five or numerous more murders in the northern region of California. The Zodiac Killer, whom is a strange, semi-secretive, smart killer has gotten away with all of his sneaky activities. The Zodiac Killer gave himself the unique name, and no one knows the meaning behind it. His target was young couples in the area. It is believed and set upon arguments, that the Zodiac, was simply an individual committing all of these hatred crimes, alone. The world is still blind to the fact of knowing exactly who is it to hold

the culpability for these brutal murders. The Zodiac has committed and confessed to thirty-seven known murders for certain, but it has been projected by police to be nearly seven individuals were attacked, but five actually lost the fight in the battle.
Zodiac’s main target was young couples, usually the ones that were attending college. His mode of operation included the use of knives and guns as a use of a weapon in secluded areas. With reports, he has been known to wear an unusual costume while attempting murders. One of the couples that were haunted were, Betty Lou Jensen and Arthur Faraday, aging from sixteen and seventeen in age. They were parked in a secluded spot, known as “Lover’s Lane”, when Zodiac saw the two lovers cuddled in the front of Faraday’s automobile. The automobile was drenched in bullet holes when the two victims were found and located outside of it. Jensen was found several feet away from the automobile with evidence of five back gunshot wounds, while Faraday was found alive with …show more content…
a shot to the head; however, he died while on the way to the hospital. Another innocent couple that was discovered was, Darlene Elizabeth Ferrin and Michael Renault Mageau. This couple was a few years older than Jensen and Faraday, nineteen and twenty-two. Zodiac used his gun for this couple’s mode of operation as well. Although Ferrin took her last breath, Mageau survived and was able to give a description of the shooter to the police. Even though Jensen, Faraday, Ferrin, and Mageau were filled with bullet holes, Shepard and Hartnell were cut open with stab wounds. Cecilia Ann Shepard and Bryan Calvin Hartnell were also attacked when Zodiac approached them in the unusual costume that he temporarily wore. The unexplainable murders continued to happen throughout northern California. After Zodiac would complete his favorite relaxation, he would either call and report the murders, or begin to write taunting letters to the police station. Zodiac has written at least eighteen letters to the police and occasionally, private citizens. One morning at 12:40 a.m., Zodiac got in contact with the Vallejo Police Department and reported the Ferrin and Mageau, and also reported the killing of Jensen and Faraday. After tracking the phone call, they came up with nothing but a telephone booth located less than a mile from Ferrin and Mageau’s death site. Zodiac was so clever and had a high sense of significance in the results of his killings. He had the ability to not get caught by any circumstance after making trackable calls and broken ciphered letters to police. The survivor of a horrific attack, Magaeu, described The Zodiac as a short, heavy set, Caucasian man. Even after the description that Magaeu was able to provide, officials have yet to solve the investigation. The weary people begin to try to solve the mystery themselves. People were on the outlook for each other, trying to help police capture this dangerous suspect. Within his letters, he used cyphers to write. A husband and wife decoded the cyphers and within three or more of his letters, it has to be said that the possible identity of the Zodiac comes to be, “Robert Emmet the Hippie”. Even though the cyphers were broken by the couple and the potential name of the Zodiac was found, police still scrutinized Arthur Leigh Allen, Rick Marshall, Bob Vaughn, and David Fincher. Unfortunately, none of the eligible suspects had any trace of evidence that could be held against them. Within investigations, Richard Gaikowski came out on top of the thousand possible suspects. There have been several possible evidences found, that can be linked back to the killings. Gaikowski was born in the year of 1936, which would have given him the age of about thirty when the killings first started to happen. Strangely, Gaikowski refused to sign a traffic citation and was later arrested for it. Not only was this strange, but the dispatcher that spoke with the Zodiac when he reported the calls, voice is similar to the voice of Gaikowski’s. Gaikowski was also a medic, which taught him the human body and how to tear clothing off a body to represent cleanliness in a certain order. With so much accurate evidence that shares so many similar proportions to the reports of the cold-hearted murders, how could they not be traced back to be the blame of Gaikowski? On August 1, 1969, Zodiac’s first letter had made its arrival to The San Francisco Examiner, San Francisco Chronicle and Vallejo Times-Herald newspapers. He described the murders in the letters and demanded that the letters be published on the front page of each newspaper by that afternoon. He threatened the companies that if they did not, that he would go on a killing rampage and randomly select a dozen people to be his innocent victims. The letters left the people taunted and scared for their lives here on the earth. The letters were marked with a cross-circle symbol, that is still unidentified as to what the meaning of it was. With the evidence collected, it is still uncertain as to whom the murderer actually is. Police until this present day, have the cases still in investigation. Becoming annoyed, they have closed most of the cases and marked them as unsolved. Due to his intelligence, the murderer of the brutal murders of innocent teens, has walked away from of all his wrong-doings. With concluding facts, the Zodiac was a resident of the northern region of California.
It is still a mystery as to why the Zodiac named himself, “the Zodiac.” Committing the murders in the late sixties and early seventies, California was troubled by dozens of unsolved murders. There has been said to be over thirty-seven murders, but police only believe it to be only five convicted murders. Zodiac’s main target was young, college couples. His favorite form of weapons were guns and knives, which he used to take the lives of innocent couples. Even though one of the survivors of his massive attacks was able to give a description of the killer, the suspect still remains unknown to this day. The murderer, who referred to himself as "the Zodiac," made contact with the police and newspapers throughout the region of his reign of terror, through a series of ominous notes. Although the police were never able to capture Zodiac, they were able to gather information about him through the letters. However, some people believed to know his identity. With the irritation of unsuccessful evidence and missing pieces to the puzzle, the police department came to a decision to discontinue the investigation. Definite questions as to the killer’s actions are still unanswered. As one or many may question, is it only okay for a delusional individual to happily go around murdering innocent, young people without any remorse? Though it has been mentioned that Mr. Richard Gaikowski is the number one
runner up for being acknowledged as the suspect, is that a settle answer that the world will be content with? Even though there was little evidence to argue whom is the legit Zodiac, the collected evidence can prove to be Gaikowski. Seems as though there will only be two people that will ever know the darken truth, which is God himself, and the person who has a heart colder than a frozen ice cube.
Walking down the street, one passes tons people saying hello and giving friendly smiles, anyone of those people could be a serial killer. In the United States there are a plethora of serial killers; in Illinois alone there are a number of demented killers, but probably one of the worst, most infamous murderer of our time is John Wayne Gacy. John W. Gacy, Chicago Illinois’ own killer clown, is an infamous killer because of his life events and careers he chose to pick, the terrible murders he committed, and the lasting impact he has.
Murderers and Serial Killers in the Chicago Area. A notorious murderer or serial killer is the typical next door neighbor one would hardly associate with a serious crime: an educated psychopath with little regard for life. Most of them commit murder for some misplaced psychological benefit. Their actions border on insanity, as some commit theft by stealing their victims’ belongings and committing rapes, an indication of a need for financial gain or a craving for distorted sexual desires.
Serial killers are everywhere! Well, perhaps not in our neighborhood, but on our television screens, at the movie theaters, and in rows and rows of books at our local Borders or Barnes and Nobles Booksellers” (Brown). When people think of serial killers, names such as Dahmer, Gacy, Bundy, and Gein are cited. During the time Jack the Ripper was executing his victims in London, Holmes began his gruesome career in Chicago (America’s Serial Killers). “Despite being America’s first serial killer, Holmes is hardly a familiar name and until now we haven’t had any popular visual record of his crimes: (Spikol). Why is it that people only think of the more popular killers with higher known profiles? They are all very similar to one another because they share characteristics. H.H. Holmes was a successful serial killer because he was well educated, cunning and charming. Those are just a few traits Holmes ...

The Elusive Zodiac Killer Serial killers almost without exception enjoy playing games. Whether played with their victims’, or the police forces trying to track them down, the game of the kill is almost as essential as the murder itself. In most instances this need to draw out the experience leads to the downfall of the culprit. This was not the case with the elusive Zodiac Killer of the San Francisco Bay Area.

A serial killer is traditionally defined as the separate killings of three or more people by an individual over a certain period of time, usually with breaks between the murders. (Angela Pilson, p. 2, 2011) This definition has been accepted by both the police and academics and therefore provides a useful frame of reference (Kevin Haggerty, p.1, 2009). The paper will seek to provide the readers with an explanation of how serial killers came to be and how they are portrayed in the media. Several serial killers have a definitive and common personality profile.
Introduction: On the spectrum of criminal activity, serial killers are rather rare. Rarer still is a serial killer like Ted Bundy. Bundy confessed to killing 28 women in the 1970s in ghastly fashion and some believe he may have killed far more. It is hard to imagine what could cause any person to cross the mental boundary into such macabre behavior as Bundy perpetrated. Nevertheless, it is important to try to understand that behavior because only though such an understanding would society be able to identify and deter mass murderers in order to save lives.
But maybe he died, which could explain the end of his communication with California. In the end, he claimed to have killed at least 37 people. People thought Zodiac was unintelligent, but that perception was obviously wrong because he had training in the following areas: explosives, cryptography, astrology, chemistry and guns. He also knew how to prevent leaving fingerprints on crime scenes; he could have learned that from jail. He knew he was clever, and it made him happy to know that the police seemed to be running in circles.
Conclusion – That is a few theories about the zodiac killer. The reason this matters is because he was a famous killer who was never caught and he taunted police. If we found out his identity, it would make people stop making fake theories about who he was and it would be good for the families of the victims. Yes, I think it will get solved in the future but it will be too late because he is already dead or will be dead. What theory do you think is the most likely to be

...nd most stunningly, the NSA deciphered cryptographs that contained his name; all pointing to him as the most likely, and the most probable culprit. The Zodiac was one of the most cold and calculating murderers of the twentieth century. His gruesome and violent ways of killing, along with the coinciding of his murders with moon phases, star appearances, radians, and the astrological chart, among other things, also make him the most terrifying murderer of the twentieth century. The scariest thing of all is that this maniac was never caught, and if not dead, is still living somewhere, potentially threatening the lives of the peaceful people around him.
Ted Bundy is one of the most infamous, sadistic serial killers known to man. During his tenure as a killer, Bundy confessed to the murders of 30 women, though the official number of kills is unknown to this day. Bundy’s sadistic habits began at an early age due to his rough upbringing and abusive parents. His tactical methods of killing left miniscule amounts of evidence, which remained undetectable by the “still rudimentary forensics techniques of the 1970s” (Crime Museum). Bundy also managed to uphold an impressive “clean-cut appearance” and portrayed characteristics of an “upstanding character” (Crime Museum). Ted Bundy, through the course of a troubled childhood and keen wit, managed to successfully become known as one of the most infamous
In Robert Graysmith’s books, which the 2007 movie, “Zodiac” was based off of, Arthur Leigh Allen was portrayed as the main suspect.(Fagan, 2014) He was questioned in 1969 and again in 1971 after one of his friends said he talked about killing people and securing a flashlight to a gun like the Zodiac had. Allen also owned the same caliber gun used in one of the zodiac shootings, told the police that the bloody knives in his car were used for killing chickens and a coincidentally owned a zodiac brand watch. Allen was less than honorably discharged from the navy and was fired from his school teaching job for allegations of sexual misconduct. The police ended up investigating Allen again in 1991 after an informant said that Allen had boasted to him about killing a cab driver.
Monsters are creatures or people that applies fear into their own lives to scare those that are around them. Villains in comic books or movies are considered monsters but have no true fear for the readers since they are fake, and can only bring us entertainment or the sense of being afraid. Serial killers are the monsters of the real world and should be feared the most. Serial killers bring true fear into people’s lives. The Zodiac uses this knowledge of fear and implements it into his own style of killing mass amounts of people, and not be caught. The Zodiac Killer’s intelligence is used to evade the police, with the murders many people of all statuses, age, and gender, by letters filled with his own language and a hidden message that slowly
