MY SPOTLIGHT
Hello, my name is Sam Hedrick, today I am here to talk about the way kids of low income and poverty stricken families are being pushed out of sports. As a show of hands, how many people in here play a team sport? How many people play an organized sport outside of school? Now I want everyone to imagine not being able to play that sport. There are thousands of kids in the US and all over the world who don't have the ability to play their favorite sports, simply because they can't afford it. Sure, most of those kids can play kickball outside or basketball at the park, but that is not the same thing as playing an organized sport with their peers. One key benefit of sports is the impact it has on your body. It is clear that staying active is an essential aspect of living a healthy lifestyle, no matter whether you are a kid or an adult. In organized sports teams have practices and games all of the time, which ensures that kids are spending ample time exercising outside. Youth Sports don’t only affect your life as a child, but as an adult as well. According to Sports and Development.org kids who play sports through their childhood usually continue their activity through the course of adulthood (Morgan). Continuing activity from a youth to an adult also helps to lessen the risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, and may help maintain a better functioning heart, and lungs. The second key benefit of sports is the social aspect. According to the US Department of Health and Human Services kids who participate in sports have a lower likelihood of becoming involved with drugs and smoking. This department also claimed that girls who participate in sports have a lower chance of becoming pregnant when they reach high school.
