Benefits of Extracurricular Activities The benefits of extracurricular activities can be endless for adolescents and high school students. Extracurricular activities help participants gain an advantage for the future in many ways. Academic success is one of the benefits that comes with extracurricular activities. As stated by Will J. Jordan, “building proficiency in athletics fosters a certain level of self-confidence in one’s ability that can carry over to other aspects of students’ lives, both in school and outside of school” (Jordan 56). The correlation the text makes between sports and academic confidence shows that sports have a positive effect on a student. Data was also added in the text by Jordan which shows the positive correlation between the athletics and academics. The text states that “participation in both individual and team sports appears to have a small, but positive impact upon students’ GPA, self-concept, and academic self-confidence” (Jordan 60). The main point, of the article by Jordan, was that sports can help students in many ways in school. Jordan states in the text that, “Values reflected in athletic competition-striving for excellence, fair play, sportsmanship, hard work, and commitment to a goal- are inextricably linked to our nation’s mainstream cultural values.” (Jordan 54). Jordan shows that the American culture of sports teaches students how to work for an achievable goal while teaching them values such as hard work and commitment, that can benefit them in other aspects of their lives. The text from Thorlindsson and Vilhjalmsson states that, “However, evidence for an integrative effect of club sport emerges for life satisfaction.” (Thorlindsson and Vilhjalmsson 644). By showing that participation in sports integrates people together, the two authors are able to prove that participation in sports can help build relationships between students. The text by Forneris and et al says, “these activities facilitate the development of relationships with peers and supportive adult.” (Forneris and et al. 52). The text displays that participation in sports helps build relationships between students and adults, therefore creating a bond that was not previously existing. Being active in sports benefits students by helping them build relationships with one another and by teaching them values that can help them in other aspects of their lives. Athletics in American schools have always been controversial for many reasons. Some of these reasons include health concerns, safety precautions, and academic significance. Daniel H. Bowen and Colin Hitt wrote an article titled, “High-School Sports Aren’t Killing Academics” to present the factors of positive correlation between success in athletics and academics. I believe that athletics in high schools not only benefit students socially, but also academically.
Athletes in times of difficulty can be important role models.” This shows that sports are in fact helpful because they can grow children into being important role models for the rest of society. Studies have shown time and time again that playing sports can be beneficial to children and we also believe this to be true. Many people still think that sports cause “too many injuries”, or coaches “are not fair enough”, but adolescents will experience these things all throughout their lives because injury can happen anywhere and they will not always be the best at what they are doing. Sports are beneficial to the youth because they can teach children and teens important life skills, help them maintain a fit and healthy lifestyle, all while improving their mental health.
High school sports are approached with clashing opinions. Some of these opinions are positive, and supportive of athletics. “Athleticism, among many activities, offers teens a physical outlet to exert their troubles, anger, emotions, and other feelings” (Chen 1). This can be observed in nearly all of the football players in Friday Night Lights. This can also be noticed in the world today. “Athletics help high school students understand their own abilities and talents” (Chen 1). This piece of evidence is very accurate when describing high school athletes. Sports can make a high school student humble. As can be seen by the preceding information, high school athletics can have a positive impact on a student’s life.
Participation in sports has proven to increase self-discipline and self-esteem, and can teach athletes to learn from their mistakes and move on (Issitt). Athletes playing team sports also develop the ability to work well with others and use teamwork in their everyday lives. Teammates form relationships that are strengthened over a common passion and goal. These relationships can last long after high school is over (Chen). These social skills translate into better communication used with an athlete’s family, peers, and in the community. Likewise, “A 2006 study in Maryland found that student athletes are 15 percent more likely than non athletes to be involved in their communities and to take the time for civic engagements, including participating in voting and volunteer activities” (Issitt). The same study also concluded that athletes are far more likely to be comfortable with public speaking than non-athletes. There are many great benefits to playing school sports. Some main benefit topics I am going to discuss are Health Benefits, Social Benefits, and Emotional Benefits. First is the Health Benefits you get from participating in a high school sport, like eating healthy. You may say that’s not true, but most dedicated young athletes are likely to “consume more fruits and vegetables”(Taliaferro, 2010). Along with eating healthy to keep up with the team, these sports “encourage healthy decisions such as not smoking or drinking”. Being a part of a team you become close to your teammates which “boosts friendships, and builds relationships with peers and adults”(Mariana Jean Shile, 2013).
Exposing students to extra curricular activities in general have many advantages, so lets think about what advantages are found in students participating in sports alone. Students that are involved in sports are usually kept busy enough to hopefully keep their mind busy enough to prevent them from doing things they might later regret. They also have to worry about taking care of themselves. So that shows that sports aren’t on keeping them busy on the field/court, but they are also kept busy when they are away. Some athletes may focus more on things such as how many hours of sleep they get a night, how often and effective they are stretching, what their daily water intake is, how many vitamins they need to have, and surely their mind is focused on the sport if they are preparing for a tournament or a
Many people think that sports can negatively affect how a student performs academically. In fact, in 2009, the University of California at Berkeley voted to ask the chancellor to stop funding the cost of intercollegiate sports, and use the money for other things around the campus that focus more on the “Academics First” resolution. “We look to the Academic Senate to represent faculty interests in maintaining the integrity of UC Berkeley as first and foremost a site of research and learning. At a campus ranked best public university in the world for its academic quality, academics must come first”. But there are also so many reasons why students should participate in physical activity and why athletics need to stay a very important part of any school’s focus, elementary through college level. Playing a sport helps you learn better time management, improve social and emotional skills, and your brain becomes more active.

The intense training makes them burn more calories, in turn making them stronger, faster, and generally more fit. People who play a different sport will become better at using the muscles used in their particular sport. For example, a competitive soccer player would have stronger legs to kick the ball and would have good endurance, while football players would have a good throwing arm and are good at running fast for quick bursts. Also, sports are known to have psychological benefits as well. One study done by Jasper Smits, the director at Anxiety Research and Treatment Program at Southern Methodist University and Michael Otto, psychology professor at Boston University showed that “exercise can help reduce depression and anxiety, and can be especially beneficial to people who lack access to traditional treatments, such as drugs or counseling.”

In organized sports teams have practices and games all of the time, which ensures that kids are spending ample time exercising outside. If they are scientifically proven to be positive, then why are they not curricular rather than extra curricular? There are numerous influences that impact the academic performance of a student other than after school activities. However, this study will focus on the effect of extra curricular activities on academic performances. In many cases, participation in extra curricular activities positively influences attendance and connection to school. This study will investigate the impact of extra curricular activities that require a daily commitment over an extended period of time, greater than a month. Athletics is the dominant after school activity that requires a daily commitment; therefore, this study will involve student athletes as well as students who are involved in other extra curricular activities. Another reason why student athletes will be a large part of this study is that there may be a correlation between the skills necessary to succeed in athletics and academics (American Sports Institute, 1991).
