Yoga has been practiced for thousands of years, throughout many cultures to help with the balance of physical and mental well-being. Throughout the years yoga has also been incorporated with many healings, whether with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, or many other things that cause us mental and physical pain. However, recently yoga has been intertwined with cancer patients who have just been diagnosed, are currently going through the treatments, and for the miraculous people who have survived this destructive disease. DiStasio states in her article that yoga has the root meaning of bind and join. She also states that yoga is used as a “union of mind, body, and spirit.” She explains that yoga could possibly be used as a complementary therapy for cancer patients, which will help the patients find their awareness of breath, they can seek relaxation during yoga meetings while also getting light exercise into their schedules and they are surrounded by people who can socially support them while understanding what they are going through. In another study conducted by Laurien M. Buffart and her affiliations, thirteen Randomized Controlled Trials were done and were focused on patients with lymphomas and breast cancer. Patients were put in yoga sessions, taught by experienced yoga instructors that involved physical poses, breathing techniques, and meditation. Patients were in sessions for thirty minutes before chemotherapy once every ten days. The results of their study showed that yoga does have beneficial effects on patient’s physical and psychosocial symptoms. I believe this study truly showed that we underestimate the psyche of patients that are being brought to the near brink of death just to live, and that something as calming and nurturing as practicing yoga can have small and large effects on these patients. Lisa Holrby has made a written guide for people living with this terrible disease and has made it easy for them to help themselves if they desire. She has a book titled “Healing Yoga for people living with cancer.” Ellen Saltonstall says that she has instructions that are clear and complete but simple enough for people who have never even thought of yoga before. Saltonstall also states that Holrby “infuses every page with positive affirmations that are genuine and uplifting without being saccharine.” It is also noted that Holrby has worked with cancer patients before and knows them on a deeper level so she knows what is going to benefit them

Yoga, as a way to achieve higher self-awareness, was around as early as 200 B.C. in India and has been gradually growing in popularity in the western world over the past four decades. Traditional styles of yoga, including Hatha yoga, which consists of thousands of poses, have long been studied as an effective form of complimentary or alternative medicine (CAM).
Age is another significant factor; if they are middle-age adults or elderly, they might want to enjoy the time with their loved ones instead of being depressed about the cancer. In the emotional dimension, patients diagnosed with lung cancer can feel a variety of emotions such as fear, depression, anger, guilt and confusion. I believe stress affects the body in a negative way and being calm affects the body in a positive way. For example, as the textbook states, “Long time stress affects the body system, and anxiety affects the health habits; conversely, calm acceptance and relaxation can actually change body response to illness”(Taylor, 45). I agree with this concept, people who tend to accept and focus on positive things; the body reacts to their emotions in a positive way.

There is a significant need for psychosocial oncology in modern day cancer treatment. Cancer is an enemy that no patient should have to face alone. Cancer treatment should not only be focused on the disease but also the individual. Humans are complex organisms that need to have relationships each other. The goal of this study was to identify the ways in which engaging in yoga practices would alter psychological well being, and allow people to engage more fully in their lives and flourish in health and happiness. The pre and post test set up of this study allowed the researchers to see the ways in which students had been affected by their participation in the yoga teacher training. Yoga training students were engaged in a four week program. They were administered tests and the beginning of the study, prior to engaging in the program, at the end of the program, after completion, and then again at a 3 month follow up.
