Yeast Lab Report

646 Words2 Pages

Introduction Have you ever seen the bread rising when it is put in the oven? Yeast is the ingredient that is causing the bread to rise. Then how does this work? What is happening to the yeast when it is put in the oven? Yeast is the single celled organism that belongs to the Fungus Kingdom. Using the basic knowledge we have, we have tested out how can we use the yeast to make the balloons inflate and made a prediction that it is the heat that is causing the bread to rise. Therefore, my hypothesis is: If the temperature of the water rises, then the balloon’s circumference will grow, because the yeast will chemically react to the heat.

Experimental Design
Materials:
9 cups of water
3 bowls
3 balloons
9 teaspoons of yeast
Tape measure

Repeat this for all three balloons. Pour one cup of room temperature water (74°F) into the beaker and microwave it for one minute.
Measure that water and make sure that it is 140 degrees Fahrenheit.
Put one of the balloon into the bowl with hot water(140°F) and wait for two minutes.
Measure the circumstance in centimeters.
Pour one cup of cold water (53°F) into another bowl. Make sure that it is 53 degrees Fahrenheit.
Put one of the balloon into the bowl with cold water(53°F)l and wait for two minutes.
Measure the circumstance in centimeters.
Pour one cup of the room temperature water that is 74 degrees Fahrenheit into the bowl.
Wait for two minutes, then measure the circumstance of the balloon in centimeters.
Variables:
Independent: Temperatures of the water (hot- 140°F, room temperature- 74°F, cold- 53°F) Dependent: Circumference of the balloon (how much it inflated) Constant: Same size of the balloon, same amount of the water, same amount of yeast

Temperature of Water …show more content…

It showed 0 cm of growth in circumstances after putting balloons in the water and waiting for two minutes. It did not show any reaction, but remained the same. It did not match the hypothesis at all, because my original hypothesis was that the balloon will inflate and show obvious reaction with temperatures. It did not show any growth, because we have just put two bases, yeast and water, together. There were several errors that we made in this experiment. First, we should have thought of the characteristic of both yeast and water. We only thought about why the bread with yeast would rise when it is put in the oven. We should have realized the fact that if we put the water with yeast, we are putting two bases together which is not going to cause any reactions. Also, I think we did not have enough understandings of the yeast. We should have had more information on yeast, to figure out the factors that will react to it.
