No human being fully knows what he or she is capable of doing. This incapability has been observed in the novel “The Attack”, by Yasmina Khadra. Sometimes it is difficult to identify a person as purely good or purely evil; in fact, it is almost impossible. The author created characters in which the characters were perceived, by society, as good, happy citizens. However, these characters had secrets and desires which questioned their morale. This contradiction in personalities is defined as being morally ambiguous; hard to identify as purely good or purely evil. One of the most prominent characters who bests suits this description is Sihem, the wife of Dr. Amin Jaafari. Khadra asserts “all I can think about is the sign I wasn’t able to decipher at the time, the sign that remains a mystery today” (106). This clearly demonstrates Amin’s guilt, after reading the letter, and why he wasn’t able to figure out what his wife was trying to tell him through her secret hints. According to Khadra, “You wanted so much to make her happy that you refused to think about what might throw a shadow on her happiness. Sihem didn’t want your kind of happiness. She came to see it as morally questionable, and the only way for her to atone was to join the ranks of the Cause. It’s a natural progression when you’re the child of a suffering people” (227). This quote demonstrates how one can feel unhappy while living in a luxurious life. Also, Sihem couldn’t feel happy when her country and people were suffering; she felt she needed to help her people, both financially and physically. Amin, at first, was blind to see the unhappiness Sihem felt and it took him a long time to connect Sihem with a terrorist attack. It was a struggle for Amin and many other people to convince themselves that people like Sihem, who are morally ambiguous, could carry out such an attack. To put it briefly, strong national and ethnic bonds can become so important, that one does not think of the consequences if one goes too far, such as the case with Sihem, as she killed herself, innocent people, and ruined her marriage with
