Writing an academic research paper can be difficult when you first come to college because you are just adjusting to a “new set of rules”. In high school you’re taught the basics of writing a successful paper. The three main parts they teach you is the introduction, thesis statement, support paragraphs or body paragraphs and a conclusion. As you get older and go to a higher learning environment you will go in further depth on academic research papers. In this paper it will discuss the different formats, the three different concepts to writing a successful academic paper, making something your own and last what to include in the main parts of the paper.

To get the best understanding of evaluation you have to constantly read and re-evaluate over and over. Evaluation for an academic purpose is important to be able to clearly “articulate and support your own personal response” (Anonymous, What is An Academic Paper?, 2014, p. 3) . Its better make sure you ask yourself “What in the text is leading you to respond a certain way?”. This question then leads to two important intellectual process: experiencing your own personal response and then analyzing the text (Anonymous, What is An Academic Paper?, 2014, p. 3). When writing this paper make sure you have the introduction, thesis statement, support paragraphs and conclusion. The introduction is the very first paragraph. Both of the articles “Dancing with Professors” by Patricia Limerick and “Shitty First Drafts” by Anne Lamott resolve the issues faced by college students when writing papers. The first article, “Dancing with Professors,” explains why college professors expect more elaborate papers even though they assign dull and un-motivational reading to their students. On the other end of the writing spectrum, “Shitty First Drafts” explains how valuable the first draft is to students, and why students should not feel weary about writing them.
I have always had troubles writing the introduction of papers. The introduction is the base and sets the mood of the whole paper. I believe it is the most important paragraph in the paper. But once I develop the introductory paragraph, I find the rest of the paper easier to write. In order for me to better myself in writing introductory paragraphs, I just have to get more in touch with my creative side. After the rough draft, the students of the class would bring their papers to the course and would get into groups to peer review the papers. This would helpful to receive the views of our peers to help edit our assignment. After the peer review of the rough draft, the next step of the writing process was the revision. The revision was when we take the information and opinions from the groups and corporate them into our papers. My English 1310 course was taught by Professor Daniel Stuart. He taught us the concept of academic writing and why it is important. Academic writing is the process of down ideas, using a formal tone, deductive reasoning and third person. Writing done to carry out the requirements of a college or university on a research based level. The thesis was the most challenging because I kept asking myself "Can I really argue this for five to six pages?" and also "Is this even considered a thesis statement?" I noticed that I can speak and write more effectively when I'm thinking critically and intellectually. My sentence structure has always been strong and I feel it has grown because of the practice we have had in class with finding thesis statements in our readings. My overall issue with this component of the writing process is using a justifiable argument and remembering to support my argument with claims and trying not to put unnecessary points in my paper while maintaining my ethos.
I have learned many things throughout the course of the term, including such things as: how to write an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, and the “Common Sense” textbook, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards. Through the exploration of the “Subjects and Strategies” textbook, I have learned nine different methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall theme and tone of the essay when used properly. This past semester, I have encountered many difficulties when trying to write these essays, but through the use of the textbooks, the aide of the instructor, and once I was able to classify the different types of essays and styles, I found them possible to overcome.
