On March 25, 1911, 146 garment factory workers their lives in a fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York City. In less than an hour, these workers died from asphyxiation, burns, or jumping to their deaths in a futile attempt at escape (McGuire, 2011). The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory the eighth through tenth floors of New York City’s Asch building, and employed approximately 700 workers, 500 of them young women and girls (McGuire, 2011). A fire quickly broke out on the eighth floor shortly before the end of the work day. Loose fabric was strewn about the floor and stuffed under equipment, providing kindling for the fire to quickly become an inferno. As women attempted to exit, they were met with locked doors and forced to find other means of escape, including jumping from the eight floor windows, climbing down elevator cables, and scampering down the fire escape - each route of escape tragically failed, costing many their lives. The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire is an example of how quickly dangerous and neglectful conditions can quickly take many lives, but it has also served as the impetus for great changes in workplace and fire safety codes and regulations, including the development of Fire Safety Codes, implementation of state-based worker’s compensation laws, and the formation of New York State’s Industrial Code. The impacts of these changes and many others are still felt today, more than 100 years later. There is, however, still work to be done in the area of workplace fire safety, as evidenced in the Kader Toy Factory fire and the Imperial Chicken Processing Plant fire.
Co-workers can be affected by workplace violence by being put in a situation that makes working difficult or uncomfortable for them. This can affect their attendance to go to work every day, or even getting their tasks done efficiently. If the abuse is coming from a superior such as a boss or manager, it can make the employee fearful, stressed out and even anxious. They could be worried they’ll lose their employment for no reason at all, or even make them feel as though their workplace is unbearable. In the workplace the manager should be the one leading and helping the employees succeed. If the manager is hurtful towards their employees, through words or actions, they are not only harming the employee but also damaging the efficiency and productivity of the office as a whole. They damage their office in such a respect because the harm inflicted upon the employee effects their working progress negatively. In the early 1980s aggression and violence in the workplace have been a source of a lot of public discussion. (Piquero pg.383) The issues have risen again recently and have mostly been present in management and business fields. Workplace aggression often includes “behavior by an individual or individuals within or outside organizations that is intended to physically or psychologically harms a worker or workers and occurs in a work related”. (Schat& Kelloway Pg. 191) A national survey Conducted by the National Centers for Victims of Crime shows several statistics regarding workplace homicide by type show that is the year of (see fig. 1), violent crimes against victims working or an duty( see fig. 2) and nonfatal workplace violence committed by strangers(see fig. 3

No work is important enough to risk the safety of our employees or harm to the environment. Everyone has the right and responsibility to stop unsafe working conditions. In addition, weapons, threats, and acts of violence will not be tolerated.
There are many conflicts in the workplace, many of them are recognized and solve. However, most of the important ones are ignored. These problems are divided into four different sections: Intrapersonal, Interpersonal, serious and minors. Simple examples of personal aggression at the workplace are sexual harassment, verbal assault, thieving or endangering co-workers. These examples of personal aggression are considered interpersonal and serious category.
Workplace violence is when conflict in the workplace is taken to an extreme. Goetsch (2002) states that about “1,000,000 individuals are the direct victims of some form of violent crime in the workplace every year” (p.129). With this information known it is important for supervisors to know how to reduce the risks and the contributing factors of workplace violence.
In today's fast paced, stress riddled work environment it is no surprise that the workplace can become a foreground for violence. Employers must be extra careful when hiring and firing employees and stay aware with what is happening in the work environment that surrounds them. Extra precautions must be taken to ensure the safety of all employees in the workplace. Too many times employers do not take the proper steps in preventing workplace violence and the consequences are disastrous. Violence on the job or even after hours can take a very negative toll on an entire business. In order to prevent danger in the workplace, employers must know how to identify potential violence and be familiar with the necessary steps to prevent it from happening.
Nurses continually strive to bring holistic, efficient, and safe care to their patients. However, if the safety and well-being of the nurses are threatened or compromised, it is difficult for nurses to work effectively and efficiently. Therefore, the position of the American Nurses Association (ANA) advocate that every nursing professional have the right to work in a healthy work environment free of abusive behavior such as bullying, hostility, lateral abuse and violence, sexual harassment, intimidation, abuse of authority and position and reprisal for speaking out against abuses (American Nurses Association, 2012).

In 2012, 4,383 people were killed in work place accidents.463 people died from homicide or 11% of the total number (Bureau of Labor Statistices, 2013). The government has various agencies, such as Occupational safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), The U.S. Department of Labor, Employee Benefits Security Administration and the Department of Justice in place to protect worker, to ensure the workplace is safe, however for reasons often unknown, we see people resort to violence to solve their problems. In 2014 we have seen a shooting in Seattle, Santa Barbara and Fort Hood.
Research shows horizontal violence to be prevalent in the field of registered nursing. Although a comprehensive quantity of incidences within the profession is undetermined, the literature is in agreement such phenomenon exists and the effects of which require further scholarly observation and evaluation.
