Workplace violence is defined as nonfatal violence, rape/sexual assault, robbery, and aggravated and simple assault, against any employed employee that can occur at work or on duty (USDA packet). Workplace violence can have an effect on customers, employees, contractors, non-Federal employees, and clients inside or outside the workplace. Most common workplace violence is known to come from drifters, shoplifters, co-workers, managers, corporate workers, and even abusive family members or spouses, such as a boyfriend or girlfriends. Workplace violence is known as harassment, physical or verbal abuse, or any threatening acts that would make any person uncomfortable or be in any kind of physical or mental harm. Criminal intent workplace violence incidents are when the perpetrator has no relationship with the targeted establishment and the primary motive is theft. An example of this type would be a robbery, shoplifting, or trespassing. During a customer/client workplace violence incident, the perpetrator is a customer or client of the employer and the violence often occurs in conjunction with the worker’s normal duties. An example of this type would be someone’s occupation that is in healthcare or social working. Worker-to-worker violence is generally perperarated by a current or former employee, and the motivating factor is often interpersonal or work-related conflicts, or losses and traumas. An example of worker-to-worker would be an issue with a manager and supervisor. Domestic violence in the workplace often is perpetrated in the workplace often is perperarated by someone who is not an employee or a former employee. An example of this time of workplace violence would be a boyfriend or girlfriend going after a spouse.
