Workplace Deviance
Workplace deviance is a voluntary unethical behavior that disobeys organizational norms about wrong and right, and in doing so, threatens the wellbeing of the organization, and/or its members(Robinson and Bennett 555-572). According to Robinson and Bennett, “workplace deviances behavior varies along two dimensions: minor versus serious, and interpersonal (deviant behavior directed at other individuals in the organization) versus organizational (deviant behavior directed at the organization)” (555-572). Based on these dimensions it was further divided, into four categories: production deviance (leaving early, wasting resources etc.), property deviance (stealing ,destroying equipment etc.), political deviance (gossiping, favoritism etc.), and personal aggression (verbal abuse ,sexual harassment etc.) (Robinson and Bennett 555-572).According to Robinson and Bennett,workplace deviant behaviors cost U.S. companies approximately between $6 billion and $200 billion annually(555-572). In addition turnover, absences, and illness, and results in poor or lowered productivity, low morale, and litigation ., workplace deviances leads to misuse and loss of time, waste of resources, increases employee(Robinson and Bennett 555-572) .
Political deviance is the use of one’s influence to harm others in a company. This occurs in many workplace as “company politics” and is considered a form of workplace deviance.Poltical deviance take place in many different forms such as favoritism, rumor spreading, falsely blaming co-workers, and much more. Societies are founded on various social norms. Norms can best be defined as a set of acceptable attitudes and practices by a given society. These norms however are found to vary from one society or cultural setting o the other. Deviance on the other hand is simply when one does something that goes against the set societal norms. Deviance is gauged on a scale of attitudes and behavior contradicting to acceptable social standards (Samuels, 2012).
Deviant behavior is sociologically defined as, when someone departs from the “norms”. Most of the time when someone says deviance they think against the law or acting out in a negative behavior. To sociologists it can be both positive and negative. While most crimes are deviant, they are not always. Norms can be classified into two categories, mores and folkways. Mores are informal rules that are not written; when mores are broken, they can have serious punishments and sanctions. Folkways are informal rules that are just expected to be followed, but have no real repercussions.
In the world we live in today, deviance happens to play an integral role in within the societies that scatter our globe, whether we like it or not. Deviance describes actions or behaviors that violate the social norms of our society. These behaviors can violate formally enacted rules, such as laws that are put into place by government, as well as the informal type of “guidelines” that various cultures have informally established and shaped for themselves. As one may come to understand, norms are essentially expectations that are standard to a certain culture. These norms gently guide people in a society in “what to do,” and “what not to do,” in compliance with their societies' norms. With this said, it is important to keep in mind that social norms differ from culture to culture. One act that may be considered deviant in a particular society, may be generally accepted in another. Three main sociological theories of deviance include the cultural transmission theory (also known as the differential association theory), the labeling theory, and the control theory.
Sociologists understand the concept deviance in a variety of ways. It is the result of unsuccessful socialization, the solutions is usually intended to change the mind of the individual, and that order need to remain maintained. Norms determine whether something is deviant or normal. So deviance depends on the social status and power on the person, the social context in which the behavior occurs, and the historical place it takes place in. Deviance is all about violating the day to day norms and is usually considered to be wrong bad, or immoral. It is a process because it just doesn’t happen one day it’s usually happens overtime. For example, its two type of deviants the primary deviance and the secondary deviance. Primary deviance would be

This means that negative deviance either choose to ignore, or do not realize that they are rejecting social norms. An example of negative deviance could be seen in the workplace. Leaving early, being rude, taking excessive long breaks, stealing from the company or coworkers, and lying about hours you have worked are all examples of negative deviance. While society values persons who are honest, and hardworking, some institutions rely on employees that are misleading and dishonest in order to get what they want, to work their way to success. If an employee is around people, or a company who is maybe known for their poor work conduct, poor decision-making, and very high levels of employee anxiety and employee stress, all these could very well make the person act

Deviance is defined as actions or behaviors that violate socials norms. In turn the concept of deviance is dependent on the social observation and perception. “By it’s very nature, the constructionism through which people define and interpret actions or appearances is always “social.” ”(Henry, 2009 , p. 6) One’s perception of a situation may be completely different from another depending on cultural and social factors. The way someone talks, walks, dresses, and holds themselves are all factors that attribute to how someone perceives another. In some cases what is socially or normally acceptable to one person is deviant in another’s eyes. For this reason there is a lot of gray area involving the topic of deviance because actions and behaviors are so diversely interpreted.
Toxic work environments are often created and reinforced by hiring, promoting, and tolerating bullies-- defined by some behavioral scientists as psychological abusers that inflict sustained “hostile verbal and nonverbal behaviors” (Sutton 2004, 19) on their coworkers, thus increasing the level of toxicity within an institution, and often leading to more bullies. This vicious Ouroboros can hemorrhage an organization’s valuable personnel, hard-earned money, and long-term value; costs which are not always apparent to organizations and their managers.
