Throughout high school, I worked in a locally owned restaurant, called “Shuckers Oyster Bar and Grill”. The owners were born and raised in the town of Raleigh and the food was based out of the North Carolina’s coast. It was the best seafood that could be found off the coast and maintained a large fan base of customers. In the beginning years of my work experience, I worked as a hostess and a busser. As I gained more insight of the restaurants trifling details, I was able to climb my way up to becoming a server. Looking back on being a server, I can easily notice many characteristics of the “McDonalization of Society.”

Shuckers was a victim to the calculability characteristic. Especially on the busy nights, all the management and the employees would worry about was the amount of customers coming in and out of the doors and how much money the restaurant was making. They lost sight of the actual quality of the service and the food. I remember in some instances, the management would want the servers to rush the customers dining experience and quickly get a new table of customers, to allow more money to be flowing into the restaurant. It was an uncomfortable thing to do, to ask what the customers wanted to drink and eat in the same encounter. Since Shuckers was a locally owned restaurant and there was only one location, the predictability characteristic is somewhat hard to fit into for this business. But the many customers of Shuckers expected the same experience and the same food quality every time they visited. They expected to be greeted with a smiling face, and that smiling face to tell them the drink and food specials of the day. They also expect the famous Shuckers hushpuppies and cinnamon butter, with many free refills. But most of all they expect great seafood, that taste like it was caught just around the corner. The predictability of expectations is high within this specific restaurant, and when those expectations are not reached, the managers have to calm the customers anger.
