Before we talk any more about this beautiful wooden chess set, let's cover the history of how the style for the pieces was chosen. If you play chess, it's likely that you have noticed that the pieces look pretty identical between sets. Who decided on the shapes? Before 1849, each chess set had different styles and designs. Players couldn't figure out what figures represented what chessmen. John Jaques & Sons produced the Staunton Pattern that chess players are familiar with today.

Many of their customers have been professional chess players and champions in the world of chess. Each board and chessmen set is carved by hand, so they are beautifully detailed with quality control in each chess board and all the pieces.
Piece and Board Measurements
The king is the largest piece on the board. It measures over 3 inches at 3.4 inches, or 8.5 cm. The queen is 2.6 inches, or 6.5 cm. They range down in size until you get to the pawn, which is 1.5 inches, or 3.7 cm. All the chessmen are pretty substantial. This isn't a tiny chess set.
Each piece is carved with detailed attention paid to the intricate carvings. Along with the distinct look of each chess piece in the tradition of the Staunton pattern, the pieces are uniquely carved around the edges. The king and queen are truly unique with wood from the other side incorporated into their crowns.
The entire board and pieces weighs approximately 3.5 pounds. The board measures 16 inches by 16 inches by 1 inch, or 40.7 cm by 40.7 cm by 2.5 cm. The board folds around the chess men in their molded compartments and is secured by two brass clasps.

The compartments are covered with felt to keep the pieces from being slammed inside the folded carrying board. It's not like chess players would treat their boards with disrespect, but accidents can happen. Your chess pieces will be protected in their individual compartments.
Handcrafted Board
While the pieces are incredibly detailed and lovely, the board is where you'll see rich detail. The numbers and letters on the sides are surrounding by a rope detail that's been carved/burned into the wood itself. The rich, dark stain alternating with the simple, light stain gives this board a touch of class and elegance. The same rope detail in the board is mirrored in the pieces, too.

Both sculptures represent Mary holding the dead body of Jesus. According to our textbook, “This figure group represented a challenge for sculptors, because the body of the adult Christ had to be positioned across his mother’s lap,” (139). Both of the sculptures were created through carving. This is a “subtractive process in which a block of material is cut away to reveal the desired form,” (Carving).
Both pieces to me seem to represent godlike features. For example, in the palette the king is shown as larger than his enemies and in the stele the king is standing over the people and is much higher than them. As rulers, they are both depicted as strong and heroic and as humans, they are depicted as
Ingle, according to his colleagues and students, was an elegant man. He enjoyed gardening, fencing, horseback riding, and classical music and would often be seen wearing tweed. This could be reasoning behind the antique and classic finer things in life often depicted in his paintings. Because he was also apart of the photorealism movement, this painting could be a depiction of certain memories of his past (“Plaque”). The type of wood being portrayed for the cabinet could verily represent historical aspects of American history because dark mahogany was known as a native
The Stavelot Triptych is stunning in its complexity and artistry. It was created by unknown artists, around mid-12th century, possibly for Abbot Wibald, in modern-day Mosan, Belgium. This artwork is currently on display in the Jerusalem exhibit at the MET. The Stavelot Triptych not only tells the story of the True Cross, but it shows the division of the Roman Empire, division of Christianity and the artistic differences between the East and the West. This formal analysis will express how the structure/shape, color, line, composition and techniques/ textures contribute to the meaning of the triptych.
The Bauhaus production was at the high price, in this way, only the elite could afford. Walter Gropius agreed that the Bauhaus production was not affordable for the general public, for the purpose of dealing with pressure of the school’s financial problem and the cost of picking up material. While the average income of a working-class and white-collar family was around 64-91 Marks per week in 1927, the Wassily Chair costed 60 Marks, and a five-piece tea service costed 180 Marks. This data shows how expensive the Bauhaus production was. The intended audience felt alienated and disconnected because of the price. The actual consumers could afford the Bauhaus production were elite or upper middle class. It was impossible that the Bauhaus production to be perceived as inexpensive common household objects by the masses. The Bauhaus created prototypes that intended to be industrially manufactured, yet they were not applied to the industry to meet this intention. The Bauhaus explored the possibility of new material. Rare and quality material that did not previously used, such as ebony, ivory and bronze, had been employed in the 1920s. The finely-crafted requirements were also the factor that raised the cost of the Bauhaus production. The Bauhaus production was crafts-based quantitatively. They required exacting handwork and crafted skills from the talented craftsmen. The pre-industrial methods such as woodworking, weaving, and bookmaking, relied on craftsmanship in good quality. In 1924, created by a master of the Bauhaus wood workshop, Josef Hartwig, the Bauhaus chess set was made from solid pear wood, cardboard and paper. The use of costly material made the chess set expensive as pearwood was a high quality wood in Europe. Also, the chess set was hand finished in a limited amount, this caused the high purchase price. Designed by Marianne Brandt in 1924, made from silver and ebony, the Model No. MT49 tea
And the skills we try to learn can be less strenuous to obtain. He takes us back to kasparov and how when he was coming about in the soviet union only a few kids that showed promise could get lessons from a grand master and then be able to access records to famous chess games. Clive Thompson considers the fact that computers have leveled the playing field. Now any kid anywhere in the world that has access to the internet can learn more about chess games. Playing an artificial opponent made the game a little faster and the instincts of a player became fast as well. A player could also experiment and see what the outcome of different moves could be. This also means grandmaster players are being produced at a much younger age than ever before. He makes a reference to grand master Bobby Fischer who became a grand master at age fifteen. He does this to show how with the emergence of computers new grand masters are getting younger and younger. Such as Sergey Karjakin who became grand master in two thousand and two at the age of twelve. This clearly shows how computers speed up the learning

Now, if the setting changed and you were now in a silent room, tapping your finger on a desk with a puzzled look on your face, a baseball game doesn’t even cross your mind. That’s because this environment is ideal for chess! The classic game that’s objective is to see who can capture the other team’s game piece, called the king.
