Women Artists and the Female Form

Cindy Sherman
Cindy Sherman is an American born artist (b.1954) who grew up in Long Island. Her family was not particularly involved with the arts, so she developed her interest in the arts during her college days. She began with painting, but felt frustrated with its limitations and decided to pursue photography. She is one of the most esteemed photographers of the late twentieth century. Her work spans from the 1970s as a student in Buffalo to present day. Sherman portrays many facets and personas of the female identity throughout her photographs. With the exception of a few series in the 1980’s and 1990’s which featured disturbing and visceral images of doll parts, organic material, and human fluids, she is the sole subject of her photographs, which is fascinating in itself as it eliminates the usual chemistry depicted in and between the artist and subject. With her extensive and skilled use of wigs, prosthetics, makeup, costumes, and digital editing, she transforms herself into a myriad of personas and identities. “For Sherman the camera is a tool with which to explore the condition of representation and the myth that the photograph is an index of reality” (Slatkin page 266).
Sherman has enjoyed critical as well as financial success as an artist, with her work commanding high prices. In 1996 the Museum of Modern Art in New York purchased a complete series from her for one million dollars. In 1999, the average price of one of her photographs was $20,000 to $50,000 and one of her photographs from the series Film Stills fetched a cool $190,000 from a Christie’s auction. In 2011 Sherman’s 1981 portrai...

Art could be displayed in many different forms; through photography, zines, poetry, or even a scrapbook. There are many inspirational women artists throughout history, including famous women artists such Artemisia Gentileschi and Georgia O’Keeffe. When searching for famous female artists that stood out to me, I found Frida Kahlo, and Barbara Kruger. Two very contrasting type of artists, though both extremely artistic. Both of these artists are known to be feminists, and displayed their issues through painting and photography. Frida Kahlo and Barbara Kruger’s social and historical significance will be discussed.
The Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD) had three different artists work on display. It was split up into three different rooms the first room was Design 99 To Much of a Good Thing and in the next room is Latoya Ruby Frazier Mother May I and in the last room was Jef Geys Woodward Avenue. The art that was on display was not traditional art work. All of the artist’s work displayed in the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit was out of the box thinking. The flow in each exhibit made it easy to move from one piece of art work to another piece of work.

On my trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, I decided to take my mother with me. While being in the museum, I decided to focus on “The American Wing”. In “The American Wing”, there are amazing pieces of art, jewelry, and antique silver. I was amazed on how each piece of artwork and item was carefully designed. They had an amazing design that you do not see now in days.

Born in Glen Ridge, New Jersey, Cindy Sherman grew up in suburban Huntington Beach on Long Island, the youngest of five children and had a regular American childhood. She was very self-involved, found of costumes, and given to spending hours at the mirror, playing with makeup (Schjeldahl 7). Cindy Sherman attended the state University College at Buffalo, New York, where she first started to create art in the medium of painting. During her college years, she painted self-portraits and realistic copies of images that she saw in photographs and magazines. Yet, she became less, and less interested in painting and became increasingly interested in conceptual, minimal, performance, body art, and film alternatives (Sherman 5). Sherman’s very first introductory photography class in college was a complete failure for she had difficulties with the technological aspects of making a print. After her disastrous first attempt in photography, Sherman discovered Contemporary Art, which had a profound and lasting effect on the rest of her artistic career (Thames and Hudson 1). Sherman’s first assignment in her photography class was to photograph something which gave her a problem, thus, Sherman chose to photograph her self naked. While this was difficult, she learned that having an idea was the most important factor in creating her art, not so much the technique that she used.
Throughout history art has played a major role in society. It started out with paintings and went to photography and eventually to films. Artistic interpretation depended on whom the artist was and what he or she wanted to present to the audience. When it came to portraiture, whether it was paintings or photography, the idea of mimesis was very important. However important this may have been, the portraits were mostly products of the media and fashions during that time period. Whatever was popular during the time was used such as columns or curtains in the background. The face was the main focus in the painting and there was little focus on the body. Later on during photography the body was focused on more. Even though photography was used much later after paintings were used, it allowed the artist even more artistic interpretation because of the ability to play a different role and not having to be ones self. The artists that will be focused on are Frida Kahlo and Cindy Sherman. They lived during different periods and their artistic intentions varied because of that. They also had similarities in that they thought outside of the conventional roles. These women were both self-portraiture artists and although they were considered that their interpretations did not always make their portraits self-portraits. Traditionally the artist was an outsider, but when it came to self-portraiture they became the subject and the audience became the outsider. The similarities and differences of Frida Kahlo and Cindy Sherman’s art were tied into the strength and also vulnerability they had because of their roles as women. They wanted the audience to see a background story to the portraits and not just an image of a beautiful face.

The flow and style of these Korean nature paintings invoked a sense of peace, admiration, and beauty onto me. Definitely, this section of the museum was my absolute favorite and I could have just stayed in that room for hours. Later, we also walked through The Astor Chinese Garden Court which was a beautiful structure of an ancient Chinese garden. While walking through this, my whole group was just in awe of the beauty and structure of this room. Wednesday Morning, we embarked on a visit to the Museum of art and design. At first, I didn’t know what to expect because I have never experienced or seen Modern art or art made with diverse types of mediums, but I found some new inspiration and a favorite style of art and beauty after visiting a certain floor. Definitely, my favorite part about this museum was viewing the art style of Miriam Schapiro. At the start of the museum I had no real interest in the pieces I saw, but when I saw Schapiro’s pieces I felt a sense of creation, wonder, and innovation. On the side of these pieces, I got to read about Schapiro’s biography and her title as the pioneer of feminist
