Willie Cole was born on January 3, 1955 in Newark,New Jersey where he also grew up. He attended the Boston University School of Fine Arts and received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of Visual Arts in New York in 1976, and he didn't stop there.He then went on to study at the Art Students League of New York.Willie Cole has been very successful in his artistic ideas ever since. He has received many awards, which included the 2006 Winner of the David C. Driskell Prize which was also the first national award to honor and celebrate contributions to the field of African-American art and art history, which was made by the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia. Although Barnes’ marriage was not a successful one, he adored his newborn baby girl, and was heartbroken when his wife left him, taking his daughter with her. At North Carolina College, Barnes majored in art, and developed his own style (Artist Vitae, 1999). When Barnes was a freshman in college he went on a field trip to the newly desegregated North Carolina Museum of Art. At the museum Barnes noticed that there weren’t any works by black artist displayed, and when he asked the guide where the black artists were exhibited, the guide responded, “your people don’t express themselves this way” (Artist Vitae, 1999). That negative response encouraged Barnes to work hard at becoming an artist.
Alix Baptiste was born on April 29, 1964, on a small island in Haiti. Mr. Baptiste has come a long way since his early days of survival. Mr. Baptiste is now a household name for his beautiful paintings in Savannah, Georgia. Entering his twentieth year as an artist, he owns an art gallery in City Market. Kehinde Wiley was born in 1977 in Los Angeles, California. He is a New York visual artist who is known for his highly naturalistic paintings of black people in heroic poses. As a child, his mother supported his interest in art and enrolled him in after school art classes. When Wiley was 12 years old he attended an art school in Russia for a short time. At the age of 20 he traveled to Nigeria to learn about his African roots and to meet his father. He has firmly situated himself within art’s history’s portrait painting tradition. He earned his BFA at San Francisco Art Institute in 1999 and he received his MFA from Yale University School of Art in 2001.
Meta Warrick Fuller’s sculpture “Ethiopia Awakening” served as a metaphoric yearning for African culture, a symbolic image of emancipation, an awakening of African Americans diaspora identity, resurgence of Fuller’s artistic career and as a self-portrait of Fuller. The Progressive era, from 1890 to 1920, forms the backdrop to Fuller’s life and art. This period has come to symbolize the reform efforts of the middle class. White middle class progressives sought to reengineer industry and government, pushed for economic and social reforms. The Progressive era was also a time of intense contradictions and ambiguities. Race was the blind spot of white progressives. 1 At the turn of the twentieth-century African Americans continued to be caricatured and stereotyped as buffoons, servile menials, comic entertainers, threatening sub-humans which led to African Americans being objectified.2 When white Americans confronted African Americans in any meaningful way, they did so through the filter of a web of racist images that they placed over the black face of humanity like a mask over an actor. African American intellectuals understood that one of their central tasks to counter the negative representation of African Americans in art would be through the reimage of the physiognomy of African Americans. The task was an enormous one, especially since African Americans had only the most minimal control over the mass production and dissemination of information. In addition, the manufacture of products that displayed stereotypical and derogatory images of African Americans was particularly lucrative.3

Bill Cosby was born in Germantown, Pennsylvania on July 12, 1937 as William Henry Cosby, Jr. In the 1950’s, Bill Cosby dropped out of high school to join the Navy. He did attend college on a football scholarship at Temple University years later. He also completed his doctorate in education at the University of Massachusetts during the 1970‘s.
Born in March of 1916 as Jacob (Jack) Ezra Katz, he was the third child to Benjamin and Augusta Katz. His parents were both Polish immigrants of Jewish descent and they raised him in East New York, the predominantly Jewish section of Brooklyn. As immigrants they were plagued with financial difficulties and this was further aggravated when they struggled through the Depression. Despite all of these hardships, Keats had already begun to showcase his artistic abilities. At the age of eight he was hired to paint the sign of a local store. ...s Cole did an excellent job in portraying realism in his paintings. He helped America vision a society with possibilities, opportunities, and abundance of resources. Not only did Cole inspire the nation; he also influenced many artists who are now heading Cole’s way. Cole was a brilliant man of great intelligence who stole the hearts of many. In an article written by William Church Bryant, Bryant explains, “We might dream in his funeral oration on Cole, that the conscious valleys miss his accustomed visits and that autumnal glories of the woods are paler because of his departure.” Cole died on February 11, 1848 due to an illness and was remembered by many whom he helped to see the true vision of America.
Throughout the 1920's, art, through dancing, singing, painting, photographing and acting became a pastime and provided individualized entertainment and lively joy for those of the time. Many had the ability to discover passions that were previously unavailable for everyone to explore, due to the need to be working harsh hours to provide for their families. Edward Harper became immersed in art, with a simple beginning of an illustrator. He was born in 1882, from small town Upper Nyack in the state New York. He took interest in art from a very young age, and would draw extremely well at a young age. Archibald Motley Jr. was born in 1891 in New Orleans. Ever since, Archibald was a child he had the desire to be an artist. His family moved to a Chicago neighborhood in the 1890’s, but the family would take frequent trips back to New Orleans in the summer. Later we find out that these two similar settings were the determining factor for Archibald’s paintings. He decided to study art at the Institute of Chicago and was recognized by being one of the few African American artists during that time.
I decided to choose my subject by walking around the museum and seeing which one “called” to me. I chose Glisten (1972) by Sam Gilliam because the bright colors grabbed me as soon as I saw it and a feeling of happiness washed over me. Sam Gilliam (b. 1933) is a very well known African-American painter, innovative for his use of three-dimensional canvases (University of Kentucky), who is a part of the American Abstract Artists group, as well as many other movements, such as the Washington Color Field movement (Malyon). Glisten is a 27 x 73 15/16 x 3” acrylic on canvas 3-dimensional artwork (University of Kentucky).
In the poem Beauty and Variations by Kenny Fries he discusses the topic of beauty, and how the impact of beauty standards causes variations within an individual. To describe to his readers’ the impact that beauty has he uses stanzas to organize his writing to start the reader with a broad meaning to an in depth story between two individuals, with one that is fighting against beauty and variations, and the other person helping the other person to overcome these standards and variations. Fries uses phrases to express a relation of a circumstance called an adverb. The adverbs are used to show the aggressiveness of overcoming beauty standards, and its variations. In the small town of Charleston, an older, lonely man sits at the bar in a Diner. A young couple sat at the other end drinking coffee. The woman was dressed nice in a pretty red dress and the man looking dapper with his blue suit and hat. The older man is a regular at this diner. He arrives at the same time, sits on the same stool, and is always dressed nice as if he were about to meet someone. He never did though. The waiter knows the older man by name and says, "Hey Hopper, anything new today or just the same old, same old?" whenever he would walk in. Hopper would just shrug his shoulders as usual and sit on his stool. He looks at the couple at the end of the bar and nods, while waiting for the waiter to get him his usual drink, milkshake. The woman looks and smiles and then proceeds to watch all that is going on; not much at all.
was born in Union Springs, Alabama on January 1st, 1915 and died in Manhattan, New York City, New York on July 16th, 1998. He was the founder and professor of Black and Puerto Rican Studies at Hunter College in the City University of New York City, as well as the African Heritage Studies Association.
