In the poem Beauty and Variations by Kenny Fries he discusses the topic of beauty, and how the impact of beauty standards causes variations within an individual. To describe to his readers’ the impact that beauty has he uses stanzas to organize his writing to start the reader with a broad meaning to an in depth story between two individuals, with one that is fighting against beauty and variations, and the other person helping the other person to overcome these standards and variations. Fries uses phrases to express a relation of a circumstance called an adverb. The adverbs are used to show the aggressiveness of overcoming beauty standards, and its variations. Fries uses imagery to create an image to explain how beauty standards affect how an individual thinks, and how they go through variations to make themselves become what beauty wants them to be. “I want to break your bones. Make them so they look like mine. Force you to walk on twisted legs”(Fries 27-29). This quote uses imagery by creating the image of breaking someone’s bones to show that the individual wants to take someone 's legs that they see fits beauty standards and turn them into theirs. Fries uses imagery in a different way also by showing where the wanting of changing body image comes from. “Your smooth skin is no relief from the danger of your eyes” (Fries 47-50). The imagery of smooth skin shows that even though the individual has gentle skin with no imperfections there is no protection from the damage the eyes will cause when exposed to different beauty standards that will cause the wanting of alternations to be done to the skin to conform to different beauty standards. Without the use of imagery throughout the poem the reader would not be able to truly understand the image of what happens when an individual conforms to beauty standards. Without the use of imagery there would be a lack of understanding that there is no real definition of beauty, because there would be no image to show the reader that what truly matters is what lies on the

This imagery can depict many different things and often enhances the reader’s ability to picture what is occurring in a literary work, and therefore is more able to connect to the writing. An example of imagery used to enhance the quality of a story can be found in Leyvik Yehoash’s poem “Lynching.” In this poem, the imagery that repeatably appears is related to the body of the person who was lynched, and the various ways to describe different parts of his person. Thus the illusion of beauty is still possible and even Gorgeous displays emotion despite knowing this “she adores her work from a distance for such a long time and it makes her cry”. In the essay “What Meets the Eye”, Daniel Akst explains scientific facts about the beauty of men and women matters to people. Over the years, women have being classified as the gentler sex and regarded as the fairer gender. Sontag uses narrative structure to express the conventional attitude, which defines beauty as a concept applied today only to women and their outward appearance. She accomplishes this by using the technique of contrast to distinguish the beauty between men and women and establishing a variation in her essay, by using effective language.

The opening of the poem gives a clear message that something is severely wrong. Before addressing any of Stevens’ poems, it must be made clear that this argument is narrowly focusing itself on the visual images within several of Stevens’ poems. To fully examine the sidelines and tangents of a single poem would be impossible, as the poems themselves grow with discovered philosophies, and appeal to innumerable viewpoints and interpretations. Furthermore, because the word image can have a multiplicity of meanings and derivatives, depending on the school of thought the reader has absorbed, I will constrain the definition of image, within this paper, to the stoic “To describe; especially to describe as to call up a mental picture of” (Morris, 657).
People are always complaining about how they aren’t as pretty as models on billboards, or how they aren’t as thin as that other girl. Why do we do this to ourselves? It’s benefitting absolutely nobody and it just makes us feel bad about ourselves. The answer is because society has engraved in our minds that we need to be someone we’re not in order to look beautiful. Throughout time, society has shaped our attitudes about appearances, making it perfectly normal and even encouraged, to be five feet ten inches and 95 pounds. People have felt trapped by this ideal. Society has made these beauty standards unattainable, therefore making it self defeating. This is evident in A Doll’s House, where the main character, Nora, feels trapped by Torvald and society’s standard of beauty. The ideal appearance that is prevalent in society is also apparent in the novel, The Samurai’s Garden, where Sachi is embarrassed of the condition of her skin due to leprosy and the stigmas associated with the disease. The burden of having to live up to society’s standard of beauty can affect one psychologically and emotionally, as portrayed in A Doll’s House and The Samurai’s Garden.
As stated by ‘The Duchess’, Margaret Wolfe Hungerford’s famous quote “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” As a result, beauty can describe as an inspiring view present in everything that can be seen. To begin, beauty can be viewed in a building as large and extravagant as the white house to the small hometown market or even in the sight of a single flower to a field filled with a million flowers. Also, beauty can be seen in the sunrise over the peaks of the mountains and also in the sunset glowing across a calm lake surrounded by the bright colors of the fall trees. Furthermore, people have physical beauty, which can be found in a person’s features, figure, or complexion. In the poem “Beauty & Dress” by Robert Herrick he explains the beauty he sees in his wife. Herrick states,

Society today emphasizes the beauty of one's outer facade. The external appearance of a person is the first thing that is noticed.
