Ernie Barnes: Research of the Football Artist Ernie Barnes was and still is one of the most popular and well-respected black artists today. Born and raised in Durham, North Carolina, in 1938, during the time the south as segregated, Ernie Barnes was not expected to become a famous artist. However, as a young boy, Barnes would, “often [accompany] his mother to the home of the prominent attorney, Frank Fuller, Jr., where she worked as a [housekeeper]” (Artist Vitae, The Company of Art, 1999). Fuller was able to spark Barnes’ interest in art when he was only seven years old. Fuller told him about the various schools of art, his favorite painters, and the museums he visited (Barnes, 1995, p. 7). Fuller further introduced Barnes to the works of such artists as, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Correggio, which later influenced Barnes’ mannerist style of painting. As a young boy Barnes was “introverted and shy” (p. 8). He …show more content…
Although Barnes’ marriage was not a successful one, he adored his newborn baby girl, and was heartbroken when his wife left him, taking his daughter with her. At North Carolina College, Barnes majored in art, and developed his own style (Artist Vitae, 1999). When Barnes was a freshman in college he went on a field trip to the newly desegregated North Carolina Museum of Art. At the museum Barnes noticed that there weren’t any works by black artist displayed, and when he asked the guide where the black artists were exhibited, the guide responded, “your people don’t express themselves this way” (Artist Vitae, 1999). That negative response encouraged Barnes to work hard at becoming an artist. However, football became Barnes’ life, since his neo-mannerist form of expression was contrary to the abstract paintings, which were popular at the

Ivan IV was born on August 25, 1530 in Kolomenskoye, Moscow, Russia. He was the first of two children of Basil III and Elena Glinskaya and was named after his grandfather, Ivan the Great. Ivan’s childhood was marked by total darkness, depression and tragedy. Only two years after he was born, Basil III (his father) died and unexpected death of a boil the turned into a deadly sore. Ivan’s mother was then the head of the throne, but only ruled for six years before she was poisoned by enemies at court and died. Ivan IV became an orphan at the age of eight, raised by sets of maid servants and advisors. As competition rose in the Palace for power over Russia, Ivan witnessed many acts of brutal violence. Living in poverty, Ivan Vasilyevich observed and listened to many beatings, murders and abuse frequently. The boyars (Russian rulers at the time) alternately neglected or molested him. Desperate because he was unable to punish his tormentors, Ivan started to torment animals, tearing feathers off birds, piercing their eyes and opening their bodies. Soccer — or football (or foosball or futbol), as it is called by the rest of the world outside the United States — is surely the most popular sport in the world. Every four years, the world championship of soccer, the World Cup, is watched by literally billions all over the world, beating out the United States professional football's Superbowl by far. It is estimated that 1.7 billion television viewers watched the World Cup final between France and Brazil in July of 1998. And it is also a genuine world championship, involving teams from 32 countries in the final rounds, unlike the much more parochial and misnamed World Series in American baseball (that doesn't even involve Japan or Cuba, two baseball hotbeds). But although soccer has become an important sport in the American sports scene, it will never make inroads into the hearts and markets of American sports the way that football, basketball, hockey, baseball, and even tennis and golf have done. There are many reasons for this.
Ivan Chetvyorty Vasilyevich, more famously known as Ivan the terrible or Ivan IV, was born August 30, 1530, to the then Grand Prince Vasily III of Moscow and his second wife, Yelena Glinskaya. When Ivan was three years old, his father died and he inherited the title of Grand Prince although his mother ruled as a regent for a few years until she died in 1538. Some believe that she may have been poisoned by rival noble classes but regardless of how she died, her death led to a lot of fighting among the nobles to gain control over young Ivan and in turn control over the power that he would inherit. It is theorized that it was these condition while growing up that led to Ivan’s paranoia concerning the noble
Sports are a huge part of my culture. Almost everyone I know plays a sport. Football, basketball, and baseball are definitely our most popular sports. In the U.S.A, baseball is considered America’s pastime. I personally think football is much more interesting, but, that’s only an opinion.
Baseball, Basketball, and Hockey are like English, Spanish, and Italian. Different places in the world understand different sports and different languages. With a world so diverse it is hard to find something that everyone can understand. Most Americans have never heard of the International System of Units, while most Africans have never heard of hockey. Nothing is more universal than soccer (more commonly known as fútbol). Soccer is more popular than Catholicism and Islam, combined. Not only is soccer the most popular sport in the world, it is also the best. Soccer is the best due to the accessibility, diversity, and unity.

Bold colors, lively people, and brilliant art maneuvered its way into Lubbock, Texas. The Frist Friday Art Trail took place off of Avenue K, primarily at LHUCA, but also at several surrounding buildings. The audience consisted mostly of students and adults, however some children accompanied their families. I was expecting LHUCA to be quiet, yet there was actually a lot of talking, laughing, and free wine drinking. The upbeat audience formed an active, exuberant, and enthusiastic atmosphere. I found my two pieces of artwork at LHUCA. The curator of the exhibits at LHUCA is Linda Cullum. One of my pieces came from the Christine DeVitt Exhibition Hall, showing James Koskinas. My second piece came from the

Obviously, also the subject matter that inspired the paintings has changed as wel...
