Folie a deux Contrast
William Trevor uses the force of time to produce a stark contrast between the earlier locale of the boys’ childhood and that of adulthood. For example, the latter scenes of adulthood are during winter on a chilly November night for the greater part of the current timeline. With these subtle details about the time of day and year, a mood of coldness and faint solidarity begins to materialize. While Trevor writes that Wilby is up through the night alone, the reader can sense that is not unusual from mentions of his marital status and that he reads a lot, drinks a lot (127). The darkness of the night and repetitive detail of a blinking light suggests a metaphor for the darkness cast over the character’s life as well as the
light acting as a constant reminder of things he’d rather forget, such as the loss of his friend. Anthony himself conducts himself in a particular way, paying more than usual attention to time than in his youth. His specific ways and coherence with time and a certain schedule enhance his character and distance him from the child he once was. The darker, heavier moods created by the time presented in the men’s older years are unlike the mood conceived by the different time in which their childhood memories take place. This contrast is enhanced again with the opposing summer and daytime memories of the boys’ childhood. This difference in season gives the reader a warmer feeling amplified with mentions of gingersnap biscuits midmorning, rainbows in the garden and fun at the beach. The mood is lighter and happier and highlights some of the boys’ best memories together. The environment is more personal and not so detached, including small details about the fond memories of fun had at lunch time with each other and stories from the kind lady who watched over them. The time in the boys’ life when they were eager and curious to make discoveries like that of the why watches keep time, contrapose the time of adulthood were Trevor makes it seem as if there is nothing left to discover in the drabness of an older age. In conclusion, Trevor uses time effectively for various reasons: to generate definite moods, to set apart the periods of life and to enhance character development.
In 102 Minutes, Chapter 7, authors Dwyer and Flynn use ethos, logos, and pathos to appeal to the readers’ consciences, minds and hearts regarding what happened to the people inside the Twin Towers on 9/11. Of particular interest are the following uses of the three appeals.
The timeline carries on chronologically, the intense imagery exaggerated to allow the poem to mimic childlike mannerisms. This, subjectively, lets the reader experience the adventure through the young speaker’s eyes. The personification of “sunset”, (5) “shutters”, (8) “shadows”, (19) and “lamplights” (10) makes the world appear alive and allows nothing to be a passing detail, very akin to a child’s imagination. The sunset, alive as it may seem, ordinarily depicts a euphemism for death, similar to the image of the “shutters closing like the eyelids”
Scientists are constantly forced to test their work and beliefs. Thus they need the ability to embrace the uncertainty that science is based on. This is a point John M. Barry uses throughout the passage to characterize scientific research, and by using rhetorical devices such as, comparison, specific diction, and contrast he is able show the way he views and characterizes scientific research.
In the book Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer wrote about Christopher McCandless, a nature lover in search for independence, in a mysterious and hopeful experience. Even though Krakauer tells us McCandless was going to die from the beginning, he still gave him a chance for survival. As a reader I wanted McCandless to survive. In Into the Wild, Krakauer gave McCandless a unique perspective. He was a smart and unique person that wanted to be completely free from society. Krakauer included comments from people that said McCandless was crazy, and his death was his own mistake. However, Krakauer is able to make him seem like a brave person. The connections between other hikers and himself helped in the explanation of McCandless’s rational actions. Krakauer is able to make McCandless look like a normal person, but unique from this generation. In order for Krakauer to make Christopher McCandless not look like a crazy person, but a special person, I will analyze the persuading style that Krakauer used in Into the Wild that made us believe McCandless was a regular young adult.
Setting expatiates the theme of loss of innocence. For example, the four major characters in this story are sixteen and seventeen years old, which is the age when teenagers prepare to end their childhood and become adults. Also, the Devon school, where the story takes place, is a place where boys make the transition to full adulthood, and so this setting shows more clearly the boys' own growth. Finally, World War II, which in 1942 is raging in Europe, forces these teenage boys to grow up fast; during their seventeenth year they must evaluate everything that the war means to them and decide whether to take an active ...
The Letter from Birmingham Jail was written by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in April of 1963. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of several civil rights activists who were arrested in Birmingham Alabama, after protesting against racial injustices in Alabama. Dr. King wrote this letter in response to a statement titled A Call for Unity, which was published on Good Friday by eight of his fellow clergymen from Alabama. Dr. King uses his letter to eloquently refute the article. In the letter dr. king uses many vivid logos, ethos, and pathos to get his point across. Dr. King writes things in his letter that if any other person even dared to write the people would consider them crazy.
In the novel The Stranger by Albert Camus, the narrator’s monotonous tone makes the reader experience a lack of emotion and feeling. The novel starts off describing Mersault’s current job and how he must go on leave in order to attend his mother’s funeral. He and his mother have been disconnected for some time as they had come to a mutual agreement with her staying in an elderly home. Mersault, the main protagonist, did not have the money or time to tend to his mother. The elderly home was the best option for the both of them. When he returns home from the funeral, Mersault gets caught up in external affairs he should not be in. He ends up writing a break up letter to Raymond’s girlfriend, which drives the rest of the story. Raymond beats his
Pollan’s article provides a solid base to the conversation, defining what to do in order to eat healthy. Holding this concept of eating healthy, Joe Pinsker in “Why So Many Rich Kids Come to Enjoy the Taste of Healthier Foods” enters into the conversation and questions the connection of difference in families’ income and how healthy children eat (129-132). He argues that how much families earn largely affect how healthy children eat — income is one of the most important factors preventing people from eating healthy (129-132). In his article, Pinsker utilizes a study done by Caitlin Daniel to illustrate that level of income does affect children’s diet (130). In Daniel’s research, among 75 Boston-area parents, those rich families value children’s healthy diet more than food wasted when children refused to accept those healthier but
Altough satires are often used to be funny ;Atwood uses this instrument of literature for an attack on a society which she strongly disapproves of. With the intent to bring about improvement, she raises the question if our current lifestyle excuses the possible future problems. Many of our today as “normal” considered values are everything but self-evident. One of the most striking aspects in the novel is time; and our relationship towards it. “ We yearned for the future.
In ¡§Boys,¡¨ the writer condenses the boys¡¦ life into one paragraph. Even though it is a story with thirty-year time frame, the narrative way ¡§one paragraph¡¨ makes every single account similar. As if readers are looking at the world from a high place. Moody uses repetition,¡¨ Boys enter the house¡¨ in every sentence, makes a connection on every single account in boys¡¦ life. It indicates that every outcome that happens before the turning point is relatively immature. This particular style, repetition, emphasizes the symbolism of the growing process and maturity. The story is based on a thirty-year time frame; from infancy to adulthood. It consists a chronology linear of thirty-year which indicates the amount of the time that boys need to transform to men. The writer condenses the whole story into a paragraph with one incident followed by the other which reflects the pace of time as they age.
The movie trailer “Rio 2”, shows a great deal of pathos, ethos, and logos. These rhetorical appeals are hidden throughout the movie trailer; however, they can be recognized if paying attention to the details and montage of the video. I am attracted to this type of movies due to the positive life messages and the innocent, but funny personifications from the characters; therefore, the following rhetorical analysis will give a brief explanation of the scenes, point out the characteristics of persuasive appeals and how people can be easily persuaded by using this technique, and my own interpretation of the message presented in the trailer.
The view that abortion, with some rare exceptions, is an extremely immoral act is the stance Don Marquis takes in his dissertation Why Abortion Is Immoral. In his article, Marquis emphasizes the wrongness of killing, as it deprives one from the potential of having a “future-like-ours.” (Marquis, 1989) He uses this idea to conclude that abortion is immoral because it essentially robs a fetus of having a future of value. However, I would like to point out that in his argument, Marquis fails to consider the fact that the primary reason women wish to abort is because they are certain that they cannot physically and/or emotionally provide for a child. In other words, they are certain that their child will not be provided a future of value. Thus
Jonathan Kozol revealed the early period’s situation of education in American schools in his article Savage Inequalities. It seems like during that period, the inequality existed everywhere and no one had the ability to change it; however, Kozol tried his best to turn around this situation and keep track of all he saw. In the article, he used rhetorical strategies effectively to describe what he saw in that situation, such as pathos, logos and ethos.

O’Neill had a great amount of turmoil in his life and the Long Day’s Journey Into Night story reflected perfectly the fogginess and daze he lived through. His dark life experiences have given him a rich, emotionally charged place, from which to write. The fog serves as a tool to paint the dreary picture and symbolize this darkness through his plays.
