If you are a woman, looking at affordable vision plans should be at the top of your list of healthcare priorities. Why is this so important? Because women in America are more likely than men to develop blindness or vision problems, due primarily to the fact that women have more risk factors for vision loss than men. These risk factors can lead to eye diseases or injuries that often result in blindness or some degree of vision impairment. A vision plan that allows you to have yearly eye exams ensures that diseases are diagnosed early to prevent a loss of sight. Affordable Vision Plans: Why Women Lose Their Vision More Often Than Men There are a number of reasons that women tend to lose their vision more often than men: ▪ Women generally …show more content…
live longer than men and many eye diseases are age-related. The chances of developing macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy increase as you get older. ▪ Some eye diseases, like dry eye syndrome, are often linked specifically to the hormonal fluctuations women experience from childbirth to menopause.
▪ Women have higher rates of autoimmune diseases like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis, the side effects of which can lead to vision loss. ▪ Social and economic factors can limit access to healthcare for women, including vision care. ▪ Though not restricted to women, obesity and smoking are risk factors that can lead to diabetes and subsequent diabetic retinopathy as well as cataracts and macular degeneration. Low Cost Vision Plans: Eye Diseases Women Are More Likely To Develop Though these diseases are not specific to women, they tend to occur more often in women than men: ▪ Glaucoma - The second-leading cause of blindness in the world, glaucoma happens when pressure in the eye is too high and it damages the optic nerve. Women may develop glaucoma more often than men because the front chamber of the eye, between the iris and the cornea, is shallower in women and can block fluids from draining, increasing pressure in the eye. Early detection can lead to treatment that can control the pressure in the eye to prevent permanent
damage. ▪ Macular Degeneration - Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a deterioration of the macula, the light-sensitive tissue lining the back of the eye. Women develop AMD more often than men because they tend to live longer than men. Early detection of the disease can lead to treatments that can slow its progress. ▪ Dry Eye Syndrome - Dry eye syndrome occurs when eyes produce too few tears. Eyes can burn, sting or feel gritty and vision can be blurry as a result. Thanks to hormones, women are more susceptible to dry eye than men; but there are treatments available that can alleviate the symptoms so that vision is clearer. Only prevention and early diagnosis can ensure that your eyes stay healthy throughout your lifetime. Scientists have used illusions to study the rules that govern visual perception, which are shaped by both evolution and learning. The question of whether gender influences perception of optical illusions has been the subject of recent research. Some studies suggest that men and women may differ in their susceptibility to certain types of illusions. For example, one study found that men were more likely to be fooled by an illusion that made two lines of equal length appear unequal.

At this point in time, scientists and doctors have yet to discover the specific causes for breast cancer. However, what is known are the different risk factors that may trigger or put women more at danger of acquiring this disease. Aged women who have experienced menopause are more vulnerable at containing this disease. Women are also more at risk if breast cancer is common within their family because it is hereditary. In addition, smoking and drinking are other factors that can put women at risk as well (Stephan, 2010). Obesity in particular is a huge risk factor. Women who are overweight, especially those who have a thicker upper body, are more likely to develop malignant cancers in the breast than a healthy woman (Vona-Davis and Rose, 2009).
It is a rare condition that affects 2 % of Americans. Signs of pathological myopia include: Bending or distortion of straight lines, altered color perception, reduced contrast sensitivity, and increasing gloss of central vision. It is a quick severe progression of myopia and loss of vision is the end result. There is an increased risk of retinal detachment and other degenerative changes in the back of the eye (bleeding from abnormal blood vessel growth). If any of these things occur the risk of cataracts could increase. Treatment calls for a combination of a drug and a laser procedure called photodynamic therapy. It is reported to be the seventh ranking cause of legal blindness in the United States of America the fourth ranking cause in Hong Kong and the second in parts of China and Japan this form of myopia frequently progresses in adult life, with small intermittent steps of elongation being observable at any age. The adult progression appears to be due to the stretching of the walls of the eye. Genetically weak elements of the scleral wall are prone to thinning and stretching. One of the major forces at work in this stretching process appears to be the normal intra-ocular pressure (Ward
Glaucoma results from increasing intraocular pressure, pressure inside the eye, which can lead to irreparable damage to the retina and the optic nerve, which connects the retina with the back of the brain. Intraocular pressure is determined by the balance between the rate of the aqueous humor production (found between the cornea and the lens) and its resistance to outflow at the angle of the anterior chamber. In most cases, increased resistance to aqueous humor outflow causes elevated intraocular pressure. Lowering intraocular pressure constrains or slows the progress of glaucoma.

There are many different reasons that woman maybe at a higher risk for breast cancer than other woman. Family history is risk factors that increase a woman’s likelihood of getting breast cancer. What this means is if a woman is in a family where this disease is common among female or even males they are at a higher risk for being diagnosed with breast cancer than someone who is in a family where breast cancer is not common. If the relative that has this disease is one that is very close meaning they are either a sister, mother, or daughter the likelihood that said person will also contract the disease is then doubled. This is mainly due to the fact that in close relations you are able to inherit the genes BrcA-1 or BrcA-2, these genes are mutation genes that play a role in controlling the growth of cancer cell. Only a small portion of women inherit this gene about 1 in 500 to be exact, however when they do inherit this gene they have a 80% chance of developing breast cancer in their lifetime. This gene causes woman to develop cancer at a younger age usually before the time they hit menopause. Also, women with this gene have a greater risk of developing cancer in both breasts which is called bilateral breasts cancer. This is due to the fact that once the cancer develops in one breast the risk for developing it in the other breast increases. (“Breast Cancer”) "About 5 to 10% of breast cancer is hereditary, passed from one generation to the next via a variety of mutated genes". (Port 95-105) Lastly,

What is the correlation between gender and how often healthcare is sought out by members of a specific gender? There has always been an impending social different classification based on gender. This stems from how gender categorizes certain behaviors and attitudes as something that woman would do more likely than their male counterparts would do and vice versa. The purpose of this research paper is to understand the impact that gender has on the use of the healthcare system. If no correlation is found between gender and healthcare seeking behaviors then there is no relation between the two.

The patient is a 43 year-old female insurance sale agent who came to the clinic for annual eye examination. She complained from symptoms of ocular irritation and burning when she wakes up in the morning. She felt ocular dryness in the afternoon and the eyes look red. She has also noted different height of her eyelids when putting make-up on. She denied significant problems with driving, TV watching, computer use or reading. She also denied flashes, floaters or diplopia. The patient was myopia with no prior eye surgeries, previous history of eye trauma, amblyopia or strabismus. She did not use any medication. The past ocular family history was negative. Social history was negative, too.
This protects the eye from becoming dry.The Cornea, a part of the sclera, is the transparent window of the eye through which light passes. The focusing of the light begins in the cornea.Behind the Cornea is a watery fluid called the aqueous humor. This fluid fills a curved, crescent shaped space, thick in the center and thinner toward the edges. The cornea and the aqueous humor together make an outer lens that refracts, or bends, light and dire...
