Students have let’s say an extracurricular activity and they get home late and they do homework. It takes time and 90% of their day was school their brains get fried with school work. Flip side ladies and gentlemen “It’s better doing school related things than being on their phones or watching tv...”. Oh please does this seem correct?! Basketball practice they get out at 6 o'clock in the afternoon. By the time they get out of the locker room it’s already 6:10 they have to wait for their parents outside they arrive at 6:20. They drive home with traffic about 6:45, dinner ends at 7:20 now homework an essay, 25 algebra questions, and an article of the week, also with some late work. finish at about 10 o’clock shower 10:30 and the days over. ALL THAT WAS DONE IS 90% SCHOOL AND THE REST PRACTICE going to bed at 10:30 and along with being a pre-ap student… YOUR BRAIN GETS SATURATED WITH
On average, high school students receive about 3.5 hours of homework each night and elementary school students are getting about three times the amount that is recommended, which is ten minutes per grade, so 10 minutes for 1st grade and 50 minutes for 5th grade. Homework takes time to do after school and extracurriculars. If a student goes to school at 9:00 and gets out at 4:00, then goes to an after-school activity from 4:00 to 6:00, they will come home and have dinner from about 6:30 to 7:15, which means that they will probably start homework at around 7:30. This means that high school student would be up until about 11:00 finishing their homework, that’s without factoring in how much time the students will waste. This leaves students with less than the recommended 9 hours of sleep. Students that have to stay up that late for homework will be tired in the morning, even if their schools do start later.
Most students believe that they have too much homework and not a sufficient time to finish it on time and it’s killing them. In these two essays “Too Much Homework, Too Little Time” by user name Laxdoublek on Teenink.com and “Satire: Homework Epidemic” by Ellen Keith of Medford High School, have many similarities and differences about the topic homework. Their essays are for everyone to realize just how much homework students in school are given. Keith does a better job getting her point across to the reader than Laxdoublek.
Integrity in the Crucible To begin with, we should value integrity to have the courage to tell the truth. This begins in court when John is talking to Abigail and says, “What do you call Heaven? Whore! I am a snob! Whore!”
More than 70 percent of students have said that they have stress caused by homework
"I didn’t feel [stressed] until I was in my 30’s. It hurts my feelings that my daughter feels that way at eleven" (Ratnesar 313). This statement describes the intense issue facing the American Education System today. More and more students are spending a lot of out of school time on enormous amounts of homework. The overabundance of homework is putting pressure on the students, along with their parents. Our nation has steadily focused on after school studying to the point of possible exhaustion. In this paper, I will attempt to explain how educators are relying on homework as the major form of education, and how the amounts are too demanding on the students.
A problem with elementary students having homework is that their parents end up doing it just to get it over with. According to today.com there was a rule established by the National Education Association that limits the amount of homework any age kid, especially elementary should have to do. This is called “the 10 minute rule.” Kindergarten students should not get homework but first graders gets 10 minutes, second graders gets 20 and so on. This rule has been broken by teachers giving kindergarten students almost as much homework as a third grader should have. Because this rule is so often broken, parents are forced to step in and help their kids so they don’t look back on their life as all I did was homework.
Many people often say that students, teachers, and parents, think homework should be banned, but multiple people disagree. This heated topic has been debated for many years. Some parents and teachers think students have too much. However, some believe their students receive too little. Few schools already have banned homework, but the majority of schools don’t. Some people agree with having ten minutes multiplied by the grade level of the student. As experts continue adding additional facts about homework, it is clear that homework can help students in different ways.
Homework has been an integral part of education since children started to be educated. Recently however, homework has begun to be assigned more and more often to students, especially in the United States, as it has begun to fall further and further behind countries like China, Singapore, and Japan. Homework is anything assigned by teachers to be completed by the students either at home, or just on their own time. The workload for students has gotten to the point where more and more parents are starting to notice the load for their kids has gotten to be too much. Many kids in high school, even 9th and 10th graders, can have 3 or even 4 hours of homework every night. In the past couple years, homework has gotten so out of control that parents are starting to speak out, and protest the amount of homework that students get each night (Marzano). In addition, studies have been done to determine the value of homework, but overall, the results are mixed at best (Kohn). Even studies that show a positive relationship between homework and test scores, among other things, show that homework is only effective when assigned in a moderate amount. Too much homework can be counter-productive, or have adverse effects on students. Students with too much homework can perform worse on tests, and develop serious physical and mental health problems from too much stress or lack of sleep.
Students may be ahead or behind if each other and will be learning at different which is not very good for them. According to this view, one can readily agree that although some classes may be missed, this may raise the bars students safety and responsibility. In Lisa Lisa L. Lewis article, “Why school should start later in the day”, it does also state a counterclaim to to why the issue of students missing class time for sports,“.... but on the other hand, there's reason to believe more sleep would result in fewer student injuries — and, in turn, fewer missed hours in class and on the field.” (Lewis 3).This is inquiring that when students have more sleep, the chances of them getting hurt during a sports practice or game will get lower. Assimilating a good amount of sleep with be both beneficial for a student academically and also bringing back to a students athlete because differentiating from school, when the child or teen attention span is not wide, the student is in great danger of getting hurt.
In conclusion, homework is a waste of time. Time that can be better spent is with family and having fun participating in extracurricular activities. Eliminating homework allows students the reward of free time and the invaluable time spent with family. Homework creates unnecessary stress and strain for parents and students alike. Also, homework allows teachers to pawn off their own teaching responsibilities to students and parents with hours of homework. Homework is not beneficial and it should be banned for students Kindergarten thru 8th grade.
Homework, it’s a waste of time, money, paper and trees. Some people don’t even do the homework or they just copy it off of others the day it’s due so, they didn’t really learn much at all. In addition, if we didn’t do the homework, we may have had a doctor’s appointment or something important we had to do.
Many schools argue that a four day school week will give students a less stressful school week. However, a four day school week with longer school days could lead to students being more stressed about after school events. Studies show that an estimated 56% of students participate in sports and over 60% percent participate in afterschool activities. Many of these students enjoy doing their activities whether it’s as a hobby or just for fun. If the school days are longer, kids would struggle to find the strength to do what they once enjoyed. Following a long, bustful day of school, students feel burnt out with a lack of energy. Students simply can’t find the energy to push through the day making a four day school week nearly
A high school student athlete from a division 1 school says,” after school and i go right to practice and then I don't get home till later and I still have 30 math problems still to do. Practices take up most of your time after school. High school students also say practices run very late and by the time you eat and shower it is time for bed because you have school the next morning. Also if there is a competition of a school day kids are responsible to make the time up on their own, but is that really part of responsibility for school? A high school athlete stated, I missed one day and I was behind an algebra 2 test, 2 chemistry tests, and 3 missed spanish tests all in one
The opposing claim is that students should have more homework because it helps them gain confidence that they have a bright future. “Students need to have more homework as if it were acting like a shield for their educational curriculum”. A good part of the argument is that it help the students get ready for anything that gets in there way so that they are ready to go to middle school! I do not think that they should have as much homework as given, although the counterclaim has a good point. Expecting kids to complete homework on time and do it correctly by the next morning could be too challenging for some
How many of you as children thought homework was a waste of time? How about now as adults with your own children?
