Integrity in the Crucible To begin with, we should value integrity to have the courage to tell the truth. This begins in court when John is talking to Abigail and says, “What do you call Heaven? Whore! I am a snob! Whore!” (Miller 109). In this quote, John Proctor tells the truth about his affair with Abigail, even though he knows the consequences of telling this. This clearly shows John having the courage to tell the truth and show integrity. This also occurs when Abigail is talking to Mercy and she says, “He knows Tituba conjured Ruth's sisters to come out of the grave” (Miller 18). In act three, John was talking to the court; he said, “I speak my own sins; I cannot judge another” (Miller 113). This line from John is important because John saves Elizabeth by choosing not to blame others and only criticize himself for the things he has done. This saves Elizabeth from being labeled as a bad person, and Elizabeth sees how much John cares for other people. Another example of integrity impacting people's relationships is when Danforth talks about hanging all the accused and says, “Hang them high over the town! Who weeps for these, weeps for corruption” (Miller 144). In this quote, the court showed no integrity by hanging many people without any actual evidence or reasoning. This lack of integrity from the court resulted in John having a hateful relationship with the court because he believed the court did not do the right thing. Overall, having integrity is extremely important in many ways and can have a positive or negative effect on people's relationships. Lastly, we should value integrity in being strong leaders.
