Why the ban on large sugary drinks? Why not leave the issue of Obesity to the individual? Mayor Michael Bloomberg wanted to improve the health of the residents of the city of New York. He presented the ban against any sugary drink larger than 1 16 oz. Cup. The ban against large sugary drinks was a bad idea because companies can lose money, taking away the peoples freedom to choice and there was a small group of people that voted on this when this vote effected millions. The first reason the ban was not a good idea was because companies can lose money. Many companies depend on the profits that come from soda fountains. "Sugary drinks are a major source of business revenue, and businesses will adjust their menus in order to maximize profits"(Wilson4). We all know that businesses are in the business of making money so in order to continue to create a profit they will have to increase their prices on other items on their menus which in turns effects the costumers more. As some customers will notice the increase of prices their favorite restaurants or other venues they will be less likely to visit there as often. …show more content…

Most people would like to make their own decisions on how to be healthy. “We are smart enough to make our own decisions about what to eat and drink” (Berman11).This ban is very one sided in that it only address sugary drinks, we all know that it takes more than sodas in our diets to make us un healthy their our other foods that affect us as much if not more. “Why single out sugared sodas, they ask; obesity has many causes and contributors, not just what people drink. And if sugared beverages are being targeted, why not take stronger measures against other sources of sugar, such as candy and other sweets?”(Park7) It might be a better idea to better educate people on how to prepare healthy meals than to just take things away from
