To many Americans the idea of school uniforms is like an old-fashioned concept. School uniforms have always been a contentious topic in the United States because of the culture adopted by most Americans. Unless a child attends a private educational institution, wearing specific uniforms is not practiced by children. A common argument today is that whether uniforms should be mandated in public school system. Why do more than half public schools now enforce dress codes (Toppo)? There are many different benefits for having uniforms in schools. Uniforms in public schools decrease economic problems for schools and parents, reduce social barriers between students, encourage discipline, and create a safe environment. Uniforms policies also result in decreased economic problems for schools and parents. They reduce in the possible harassment based on differences between economic standing among students. Not every student has parents who are rich and due to the differences noticed by the clothes a student might wear, they are bullied and/or harassed. School uniforms are beneficial to all families by decreasing clothing costs (Firmin, Smith and Perry, 143-168). This is very important to low income and low budget families because uniforms would save money. Since uniform increases efficiency of a student, funding could be directly used in educational programs rather than disciplinary and administrative functions. Therefore, dress policies at schools benefit schools and parents economically. Uniforms in public schools system have reduced social barriers between students. Uniforms promote equality for all students regardless of income or status. There would be absolutely no controversy created over who has the most fashionable clothes in schoo... ... middle of paper ... ...Stephen. "School Dress Codes Are Necessary and Constitutional." Ever wonder what it would look like to have all students wearing the same white polo shirt, black pants, and a district sweater walking in the hallway? Nowadays, public school and many districts are discussing the possibilities of enforcing the uniform policy. In most places, many private schools already require students to have their mandatory uniforms; however, there are only a few public schools adopting this mandatory school-uniform polices as one of their enrollment requirements. The reason why not all public schools participated was because people believe that they are violating the freedom of choice when enforcing this mandatory uniform policy; yet problems such as bullying and segregation, emerged in these schools. Some people still think uniforms have no benefits at all. However, all public school students should be required to wear uniforms because it would improve the academic performance, reduce the violent behaviors based on appearance judgment, and provide less stress for both parents and students.
Contrary to popular belief, school uniforms play a larger role in education than one might think. Studies have shown school uniforms to promote more focus and increase drive pertaining to students’ school work. Just like a businessman puts a suit on when attending an important meeting, some students become more serious about their projects and assignments at school when putting their uniforms on. While individuality is an important thing, many people are constantly ridiculed not because of personality-based traits, but because of the pattern on their t-shirt, the hat that they mustered up the courage to wear, or the brand on their jeans. Uniforms eliminate this in-school judgment that occurs in many around the country. If public schools implemented mandatory school uniforms, might there be more unity among the student body? Would the quality of education be more of a priority in student’s lives?
A dress code enforces discipline in learning by changing a person’s attitude toward success. Student’s uniforms are a major point of discussion in public schools today. Many schools have already adopted a policy requiring school uniforms, and many more schools are thinking about it. School uniforms greatly benefit both the students and faculty by creating an atmosphere in which the students are able to get the most out of their education. They would encourage more concentration on studies and a sense of security in the school. School students should have to wear uniforms because it is economical, it instills school unity and pride, and it helps them focus on their work. Having uniforms is economical for many parents. The cost of uniforms is significantly less than what a lot of parents pay for unregulated school clothing. Many parents have difficulty finding certain styles or colors to please their children. Others can’t afford to buy clothes every so often. With school uniforms, parents will only have to purchase clothes for weekends affairs, which is hardly economical. School uniforms instill school unity and pride for the school.
Lack of parents support is the most significant reason for schools failing to implement any sort of school uniform code. Parents, teachers, and students should support the need for school uniforms in public schools so that they may be able to achieve higher educational goals. This paper will discuss many of the pros to the debate on uniforms in public schools as well as touch on some of the cons on the subject. After weighing the two sides, it will demonstrate how the pros are a more sensible alternative and why schools should require mandatory uniforms for their students.
What to wear? This is the question students ask themselves every morning before going to school. Nationwide educators and parents are debating whether or not their schools will be a part of those public schools who have chosen to have their students to wear school uniforms. The wear of uniforms in public schools may reduce bulling, teasing, possible violence, creates a better learning environment and may even maintain social equality. Since the 1990s, the practice of having public school students wear uniforms--like their private school peers--has been credited with some amazing results. School uniforms, proponents have said, can lead to improved discipline and classroom behavior, increased school attendance, respect for teachers, better school performance, higher student self-esteem and confidence, lower clothing costs, promotion of group spirit, reduction in social stratification, and lower rates of violence and crime. Uniforms, in short, seem like the solution to all of education's problems. (Konheim-Kalkstein, 2006)
The potential benefits of school uniforms include decreasing violence and threat. Some instances involving designer clothing and expensive shoes have led to life-threating situations among students. Hannah Boyd says, “Now that kids are getting mugged for their designer clothes and expensive sneakers, school uniforms seem a safer alternative to many.” "It's tragic when young people without a balanced upbringing, without grounded values, without a secure education, wind up believing that it's all right to kill somebody for a pair of sneakers or jewelry or a designer jacket," Mr. Clinton said, citing recent incidents of violence by teen-agers. With school uniforms students won’t be getting mugged for their designer clothes and expensive sneakers because everyone’s wearing the same thing and won’t get jealous of what others have. Uniforms help rid of the bullies that want to beat someone up because they dress a certain way or because they don’t have what other people have. With uniform policies kids can’t get beat up or made fun of because of what they wear and the uniforms help build that confidence that kids who get beat up lack. ...
Over past years there have been many debates about school uniforms being beneficial or not. Uniforms have mostly been introduced to private schools at first, but gained more popularity in public schools when President Clinton stated his opinion, “If it means that the school rooms will be more orderly and more disciplined, and that our young people will learn to evaluate themselves by what they are on the inside, instead of what they're wearing on the outside, then our public schools should be able to require their students to wear uniforms." (K, Marian). Wearing the appropriate school attire can be useful in many different ways and is a needed change in schools around the country. The biggest argument that adults use when against uniforms is that a student won’t be able to truly express themselves, but that’s not true. Wearing school uniforms will improve the person they are by making them express themselves through personality rather than look wise (Uniforms). Uniforms can’t compare their prices to designer clothing; a brand new pair of sneakers that cost two hundred dollars can buy a student possibly three new sets of a new uniform. One no longer has to worry about the time spent when buying clothes for every season. An important thing to know is uniforms show the unity of a school, no one is inferior or superior to anyone else. School uniforms are a good idea because it’s less money spent, there is less stress about the time, and they represent equality.
School uniform prepares the students for school in a much simpler and faster way. Time is not wasted in the morning in choosing and matching what to wear, thus students will get to school on time. This boosts attendance and gives students more time for studying. For example, at a school near Boston a high school senior remarks that “for some people it takes hours to get dressed. If we had a uniform it would take three minutes” [1]. The stress of matching and choosing clothes, very common with female students is eliminated and students arrive in school clear headed and prepared for the day’s educational task ahead in school. Uniforms are cost effective and they save parents several dollars that will be spent on buying casual clothes for their children. They will have to spend less when they have to buy uniform because the quantity of clothes purcha...
Having students wear school uniforms can be fought over for centuries to come, and both sides of the issue, whether students should or should not wear school uniforms, can be very convincing and understandable. Some people might say that having students wear school uniforms can help them concentrate on their learning and leave clothing and fashion aside. Others argue, that having students wear school uniforms can leave students without having the feeling to express themselves about what they really think, like, or enjoy doing. This paper will argue that having students wear school uniforms, could be helpful to the students, change the ways students act, and can help decrease unwanted behavior among the students.
Today, many parents and teachers struggle with the idea of school uniforms. Many feel perplexed with the idea if it is the right decision for their child and school. Positive and negative effects for the student can be seen in public and private schools on this topic.
Uniforms gives students are equality and it stops bullying because of what they are wearing. Students can express themselves in individuality in school uniforms by variations. School uniforms are important to me because I have more self- awareness and I am more perceived by my peers and teachers, but I also love representing my school in academics, sports, school pride, and community spirit. In addition it can make getting ready for school easier instead of parents’ having to fight with their children about what to wear. It can also increase attendance and
Should school uniforms be required? Some say that uniforms help students focus on academics instead of fashion. Others believe that students should have the freedom to choose what they wear to school in order to express their differences and their uniqueness. After considering both sides of the issue, I strongly believe that uniforms should be introduced in primary public and private schools. Wearing school uniforms does not promote unfair comparisons between student’s incomes in terms of clothing; they aid students in developing their inner qualities instead of focusing on the outer aspects of themselves in the crucial earlier years of their lives, and provides a platform for practicing discipline.
Trying to fit in is one issue that students deal with at school, and requirement of uniforms can eliminate that stress. With all the different fashion trends coming out every day, keeping up with them are stressful, but a student being picked on for not following in that fashion trend is even more stressful. Uniforms can help encourage students to accept each other for who they are, and not for what they are wearing. MPS Superintendent, Barbara Thompson, believes uniforms “will create unity among the school system,” and “create a level playing field for all students” (Johnson, 2010). Some people that are against the requirement of uniforms believe that they interfere with the students’ right to self- expression, but how can a student express themselves if they are being picked on about what they are wearing? We believe that without the interference of fashion, students will be more focused inside the classroom rather than being the next fashion queen or king. President Clinton, in 1996, said “if it means teenagers will stop killing each other over designer jackets, then our public schools should be able to r...
Envision a high school student being tormented by what he is wearing, and this doesn’t happen once, instead it happens frequently. You see him become upset, letting his head face the ground, and somewhere inside of you, you feel the same pain that he is feeling. Students in high school are making rude comments about their peers’ clothing, whether it’s the scarf, the jacket, or the socks; they always have something to say. What better way to fix this situation than to arrange uniforms for high school students? The idea of uniforms should highly be considered in order to allow students to feel more confident while at school.
The use of school uniforms are a problem in the United States. They are completely useless that cost families and schools money for mandatory clothes.School uniforms affect a student's sense of style when they wear the same thing for 5 days a week. There is also a cost issue for the schools that make their students wear uniforms.Although school uniforms reduce peer pressure, they also highlight the social cliches they are supposed to eliminate, the use of school uniforms should be removed because they are a cost issue for the schools, they do not help prevent bullying, and they restrict a student’s first amendment rights.
