Should Students Wear School Uniforms?

Having students wear school uniforms can be fought over for centuries to come, and both sides of the issue, whether students should or should not wear school uniforms, can be very convincing and understandable. Some people might say that having students wear school uniforms can help them concentrate on their learning and leave clothing and fashion aside. Others argue, that having students wear school uniforms can leave students without having the feeling to express themselves about what they really think, like, or enjoy doing. This paper will argue that having students wear school uniforms, could be helpful to the students, change the ways students act, and can help decrease unwanted behavior among the students. An example is, “In Long Beach, California, after two years of a district wide K-8 mandatory uniform policy, reports of assault and battery in the district’s school decreased by 34 percent, assault with a deadly weapon dropped by 50 percent, fighting incidents went down by 51 percent, sex offenses were cut by 74 percent, robbery dropped by 65 percent, possession of weapons decreased by 52 percent, possession of drugs went down by 69 percent, and vandalism was lowered by 18 percent.” That was from an article called, “Should students have to wear school uniforms?” (Should students have to wear school uniforms?). That example shows that when students had to wear school uniforms, their bad behavior decrease exponentially. Another example of how wearing school uniforms can reduce bad behavior is, “A study of educators in 38 North Carolina high schools found that 61% of the responding principals and assistant principals believed that there was a reduction in cases of misbehavior on campus when school uniforms were introduced,” (Does wearing a school uniform improve student behavior?). If that data was found among 38 schools, that must mean that having kids wear school uniforms can make a difference in their learning. A handful of people would argue that the data is only from one school in California, and that the data might not be the same for all the schools around the world. That might be correct, but wearing school uniforms could cut all of those things: possession of weapons, sex offenses, by maybe five, six, or seven percent, and that would make a difference to the school.
