BEEP. BEEP!, this is the sound of a teenagers alarm going off, and they just hit the snooze button 5 times and dwell on getting up to go to school so early in the morning. “Studies have shown over and over that teens get more sleep when school starts later, with research-based benefits to their physical and mental health, academic performance and beyond'' (Durrani 2). Sleep deprivation in teens can impact their mental well-being, as well as their physical status, along with academics. Over half of the high schools in the suburbs start at a later time and they have seen positive gains in students' academics, and behavior. Students need more sleep to focus, because it helps them concentrate and do homework. Teens tend to drink caffeinated beverages, and make unhealthy food choices; in addition, 83% of kids between the ages 13-18 consume caffeine regularly before school to stay awake. Due to early school times, kids do not get enough sleep, which is why they should have school started in later times (Vyas 1). These health risks are dangerous to young teens. Many teens stay up late playing video games or finishing school work, which leads to unhealthy sleep. Safety for students would be the parents top priority, and the reason why school start times would involve more safety procedures is because some teens drive early and early morning drivers are not usually fully awake and it would cause a crash or something more harmful (Wahlstrom 3). Students need to be able to graduate from high school and to do that, we need to be sure they get enough sleep to focus throughout their school day. Rather than having a good amount of sleep, students focus more on the later in the day. Students will feel more refreshed with the sun shining and you will be more awake for the day. When teens go to school earlier in the day they don't quite focus and do school work, so if they go to school later they will have enough motivation for school work and homework. In order to get kids to show up to school, it would be better to let them sleep in for at least an hour later in the day. Schools should be allowed later school times due to how it would positively affect students and it would make them less stressed, tired, more focused, and capable of turning things around on time. It has been proven that later school start times have helped students mentally and emotionally.
