It is an undeniable truth that nearly everyone has plagiarized at one point or another during their school career. However, that does not mean it is the best, nor the correct way to complete a paper. A notoriously bad habit is to kick once students and adults alike grow too accustomed to it, is the saving grace known as the copy-and-paste button. Though it seems easier and appears to lighten the work load, this option is actually a trap leading into a sinkhole known as plagiarism. Despite the instant gratification of seeing work getting done quicker, people are only causing more damage by taking this “shortcut”. A sullied reputation is a huge repercussion caused by those caught plagiarizing. For students like myself, plagiarism can result in suspension from the school or university they attend and stain their academic records. Nearly all educational establishments see plagiarism as a serious offence. If students are not failed or expelled after their first offence, they usually are if the plagiarism continues. Quotations are used when information is taken from the original source and the original author is referred to saying it. It helps when something cannot be said any better than how the original source said it. By quoting a certain phrase or passage it is could be a better way to indicate the words do not come from the researcher, but from the author of the souse material used. However, it is important to know that writing original ideas and sentences can improve a writer’s abilities and the paper overall. Summaries are when information is repeated from a source, but only the main ideas and points are focused on. By using these techniques, it could add depth and spice to a paper while helping to avoid plagiarism
The debate on Plagiarism is one that remains constant. Whether it is done unknowingly or with intent, the result is the same. It affects everyone. The impact it has in today’s society, mainly in the work of students, prompts the interest of both experts and students alike. What is Plagiarism? In the article, it is using words that one did not originally write in their own work without properly citing where the information came from. I will analyze the concept of plagiarism in the article “Plagiarism Lines Blur for Students in Digital Age”, by Trip Gabriel. My focus is his ability in conveying the views of both educators and students, and what plagiarism means to them.
Descriptions are made as to what defines plagiarism and ways to avoid plagiarism. “To plagiarize is to take work that is not your own and submit it as your own, without giving credit to the person who created it.” Some suggestions to avoid plagiarism are to keep your notes organized, and to cite whenever you use someone else’s ideas. It is also suggested to summarize, paraphrase or quote your sources. It is not considered your writing if you connect multiple quotes without adding your own ideas or thoughts. The only time you don’t have to cite is when the information you are talking about is common knowledge, or it is about your own life.

I believe there are a variety of reasons individuals plagiarize. First, students are insecure with their own ability; they don’t believe they can do the work therefore they take others. Second, students believe they can get away with the act because they know others who have plagiarized, and there were not any consequences. Lastly, students are uneducated on what plagiarism is and do not know the consequences of their actions if they commit an act. These ideas will be the focus of the position taken on plagiarism in today’s academic society.
