Plagiarism: The Death of Originality Have you ever known someone who plagiarized, either unknowingly or intentionally? Have you? It is very to plagiarize, today in a world of technology. Sadly enough, many people don't even know what it truly is, which can sometimes lead to plagiarizing without knowing it. There are many different ways to plagiarize, but all are wrong and unjust. Whether someone does it unintentionally or deliberately, plagiarism is wrong. Plagiarism should be corrected, fixed, and deleted before any damage is done. When you hear the word plagiarism, what do you think it means? According to Google, plagiarism is “the practice of taking someone else's work or ideas and passing them off as one's own.” If I hadn’t quoted Google and cited them, that would have counted as plagiarism in itself! But that's just a blank definition, only telling you what it means, not necessarily how to avoid it. This is one reason why people plagiarize: some don't know that they are plagiarizing, when they actually are. Although there are several different ways to plagiarize, ...
The impact of plagiarism can be a self-destructive for a student. On the other hand, plagiarism may cause an instructor to feel betrayed and disrespected by a student.
What is Plagiarism? Most students would say that plagiarism is when you copy another person’s work and even use their work as their own. But using terms like “copy” is a way of disguising the seriousness of the issue. To plagiarize means to steal and pass off others ideas as your own, to present a new and original idea from an existing
According to the code of conduct at Clarion University plagiarism is “the use of another's words without attribution and without enclosing the words in quotation marks. Plagiarism may also be defined as the act of taking the ideas or expressions of ideas of another person and representing them as one's own--even if the original paper has been paraphrased or otherwise modified.” (“Department of Nursing” ) A lot of people, including myself have been confused of what plagiarism really means. Through my research I found that there are many different kinds of plagiarism and that a lot of people do it without even being aware they are. I have made the mistake of thinking that you could use another persons quote as long as it was cited, however, this is wrong because it is plagiarizing and this is a very serious issue to deal with. I personally thought using citations was okay because I did not understand the difference between the two, however this is considered a theft. (“What is Plagiarism” ) According to Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary plagiarizes meaning is “to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own.” (“What is Plagiarism” )
“Plagiarism” was the label given to me at the age of sixteen. I was accused of plagiarism but felt like a fraud to me. For me my paper was not the reason why I was a fraud, instead it felt like it was me being judged. “Dishonest, fraud, criminal, and unprincipled” were the terms that were being placed with my name by others in my high school where people believed the untruthful act was performed. People who knew me such as my teachers, administrators, and fellow classmates were creating an untruthful image in their minds as they stopped interacting with me. I was a junior in High School for Construction Trades, Engineering and Architecture a highly known high school constructed to educate students with different ethnicity and accepting all.
Plagiarism, or the unaccredited use of another's work or ideas, has become more and more of a problem in recent times than it was in the past. According to statistics found in a survey conducted by the Free Press, 58% of high school students let someone copy their work in 1969, but by 1989 this number had risen to 97%. The expansion of the World Wide Web and the number of people accessing the Web on a regular basis has caused an epidemic of plagiarism in this country, especially among students. This is a serious problem that must be addressed because many students feel that if they are not getting in trouble for cheating, than it is okay.
Plagiarism is when you take someone else work and try to pass it off as your own. This can also mean yourself which is called self-plagiarism this is taking old published and submitted work and trying to turn it in without citing yourself. When it comes to plagiarism it does not have to be just stealing an entire paper sometimes sentences and paragraphs are taken without giving credit to the proper source.
What exactly is plagiarism? Plagiarism is the act of taking someone else’s work and passing it off as your own. According to
Plagiarism is a very serious topic to be dealt with, due to the fact that it can damage one’s future very severely. It is done often by students in high school and other institutes such as universities and colleges. People plagiarize intentionally and sometimes even unintentionally. The people who plagiarize intentionally are people who don’t really care about their future and career. The people who plagiarize unintentionally are people who do not cite their work properly and completely. Most people that plagiarize do not get a good mark and most likely have to face consequences such as failure, suspension or the chance of being expelled. In conclusion it is believed that one should not put his/her future at risk and try to expand their mind through the process of critical thinking independently, so they do not have to make the mistake of plagiarizing.

I currently attend Jasper High School as a member of the 2017 graduating class. I enjoy reading, drawing and learning intriguing certainties. Reading material that gives me the most pleasure is non-fiction that teaches me about various aspects of the restorative field. My college experience is considerably limited reflecting on the fact that I have only attended college for a brief time. I plan to attend Baylor University with a biology major to pursue pre-medicine.
Every year millions of students enroll in college. Some will give it their all, some will do the best they can and some will try to get out of doing the work required by cheating. The most common form of cheating in college is plagiarism. “Plagiarism is theft: the stealing and appropriating of someone else’s words and ideas and passing them off as your own” (“Preventing Plagiarism”). Due to increasing pressures to excel, students who are motivated by a goal to maintain their GPA because they believe they will obtain a high paying lucrative job once they graduate from college turn to plagiarism as a way to succeed.
Plagiarism is defined by UMUC (2006) as “the intentional or unintentional presentation of another person’s idea or product as one’s own. Plagiarism includes but is not limited to the following: copying verbatim all of part of another’s written work; using phrases, charts, figures, illustration, or mathematical or scientific solutions without citing the source; paraphrasing ideas conclusions or research without citing the source in the text and in reference lists; or using all or part of a literary ...
Plagiarism is a very serious subject to talk about. It doesn’t sound like it is that big of a deal but very serious things can come out of it. Students could lose scholarships and get kicked out of school for something as simple as copying someone else’s work. Students should learn the rules and regulations of the school ,that they are attending, about plagiarism.[1] That’s basically what plagiarism is; copying someone else’s work.
What is plagiarizing? According to Merriam Webster 1, plagiarizing is using work from another source as your own without giving credit to that source. Unbeknownst to me, there are several different types of plagiarism. According to Classroom 2, the 4 most common types are, “Direct Plagiarism”, “Paraphrasing Other Works”, “Substituting and Rearranging”, and “Self-Plagiarism”.
Plagiarism is a serious offense and a growing trend in our society today. Some may associate plagiarism with the idea of taking someone else’s writing and making it their own. In fact plagiarism involves anything that is copied or taken and said to be of your own work. Dictionary.com defines plagiarism as “the unauthorized use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work, as by not crediting the author”. In fact this definition covers all types of cheating and misrepresentation of ones own work. There are many numbers and statistics that can be found on the amount of individuals that have admitted to cheating. Perhaps the most astounding number is one that was reported by Moeck in 2002 aloft of 40% of higher education students commit academic dishonesty. This number I’m sure has grown since this report and will continue to grow with the development of the Internet. There are a number of ideas and strategies that can be employed in order to stop this ever-growing phenomenon. As teachers and adults, we are responsible for stopping this trend and educating students about the consequences and dangers of plagiarism. I believe there are a variety of reasons individuals plagiarize. First, students are insecure with their own ability; they don’t believe they can do the work therefore they take others. Second, students believe they can get away with the act because they know others who have plagiarized, and there were not any consequences. Lastly, students are uneducated on what plagiarism is and do not know the consequences of their actions if they commit an act. These ideas will be the focus of the position taken on plagiarism in today’s academic society.
