Oh, how our teachers like to tell us that writing is so important. I used to not believe what they told us. However, after being in Mrs.Kigar’s Senior Composition class I learned that they are actually telling us the truth-writing is important! I’ve gained many new writing skills this year and realized many I already had. Additionally, I found some weaknesses in my writing and was able to improve upon them as well.
I have always thought that my writing was mediocre, even substandard at times. Due to my lack of confidence in my writing capabilities I found it boring to write; even fearful to write. I never knew how to add voice or style in to my writing. In fact, I thought you weren’t allowed to add voice because school is to serious

My knowledge of vocabulary, punctuation, and grammar has all grown exceedingly. Learning such things has influenced me to write on my own more, and has made writing more enjoyable. I have learned the importance that writing has in lives. “Writing isn’t just for college papers. Our world is all about writing. Tweeting, posting, messaging, emailing, and all other forms of communication involve some form of writing. The better you get at it, the better you’ll be able to represent yourself on social media as a professional person whose words are worth reading.” (Ribeiro 2) I can’t say it any better than that quote right there, it is true writing can enrich all parts of your communicating life. Writing is in more aspects of your life than you think. If you want people to listen to what you have to say then learn how to convey your message. If you want a good following on instagram know the uses of voice and style. If you want the best job out there learn how to write a killer resume that will make them want to hire you on the spot. Your writing represents you, and your representation is so important. Next time your teacher says writing is important, you ought to believe
I am more knowledgeable about invention, arrangement, style, and delivery, all in which create a masterful piece of text. A few examples, I have learned to organize and construct my thoughts and ideas clearer. I have been taught to use stronger transitions and focus more on the delivery and content of the body element of essays. Further, the instructions and advice I have received throughout this term have influenced my understanding of the purpose of writing. My outlook on writing has been modified by shifting my perception of writing from, writing to prove I am a good writer by perceiving it as using “fluffy” or BIG words to impress my audience. I grew to understanding that good writing’s purpose is to engage the writer by mind-striking ideas and arguments, which therefore will prove and title me as a “good writer”.
After reading our mentors notes and analyzing what we have learned through this term, I have read all assignments that were submitted before our midterm exam. This gave me chance to follow up with how I advanced my writing skills from the beginning. As it was interesting to see how I can point out the missing qualities of these essays, it was nice to see our mentor’s notes justifying my points.
Learning to read and write are both considered to be fundamental human skills, that we begin to learn from the day we start school. As time advances, as do our minds, and we are expected to evolve in our reading and writing skills. Finishing high school is a large milestone for the lives of young adults; however, there is so much to learn in order to reach the next big milestone. To be a writer in college can challenge our preconceived thoughts on how we write. Although some skills remain unchanged, high school graduates are faced with overcoming new ways of doing a skill that seems so simple that it is practically innate. The definition of writing skills for college students is much different than high school. However, considering we have come so far it is time to go over the information we already know and challenge ourselves with ideas that we are yet to learn more about.
Over my career of schooling my writing has changed dramatically at times and very little at others. Through my years of schooling people have determined my main weaknesses and strengths that I should work on with my writing. My biggest weakness is writing introductions and conclusions they must be so complicated and require so much thought to be defined as good. I excel at writing body paragraphs and explaining all the facts that back up your main ideas though.
Throughout the semester i only learned few new things but i did improve and solidify my skill of writing. Before my first year of college my skills have always undermined by other high school english teachers and with that came disappointing grades. I am writing this paper as a reflection of the semester and the progress i have made as a writer. I now understand many things that my high school teachers have done a poor job demonstrating and i am grateful that i decided to take my own route in my education instead of their syllabus. I entered the semester with anxiety that i would perform as i did before but i clearly outdid my own expectations by receiving top grades on my essays.
Writing doesn’t come easily to me, which must make me a glutton for punishment. It has taken me years of training, learning to structure an essay and unlearning to begin again. Only since attending HSU am I realizing how exceptional my writing has become. Over the course of two semesters, I have seen my writing expand and grow. While I still adhere to the training I received in high school, I am excited to now take these tools and develop my own unique style in the years to come.
In the chapter, “Internal Revision,” Murray discusses the writing process and how we as teachers should teach it. He states, “And yet rewriting is one of the writing skills least researched, least examined, least understood, and—usually—least taught” (75). I believe that rewriting is a vital step of writing an essay, story, or anything that you are putting together. Growing up in school, I never had a revision time. Once it was due, we had to turn it in and then we get it back with a letter grade. With not knowing why you got the grade and how you can fix it makes you discouraged for the next assignment. It was not until high school that I started to get a little feedback from the teachers on why I got the grade that I did. We still did not
Even though learning how to write effectively is important, it is also essential to learn how to
As a student, I feel that I have many writing weaknesses. I know that on my own, and because teachers have told me so. Some of the complications I face with writing is not using enough body paragraphs, forgetting a thesis statement, lack of word choice, punctuation errors, and etc. I am unaware at times of my mistakes, but I always try to correct them.
Although, I was able to grow and improve as a writer this semester, I feel that there is still a lot for me to learn and room for me to continue growing using these techniques I’ve learned from this class. These academic techniques will help me in the future in my education, career and in life to be successfully educated wherever life takes me.
Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class, I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work to see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded.
I personally do not enjoy writing like most people would feel about reading a dictionary. I am cautiously treading water with every word I type. I have always found writing to be a tedious process. I have never found ease in wording something the way I want to; therefore, it usually sounds so much better in my head. I’ve never considered myself to be comfortable with writing in general. For example, I always had a hard time telling if I needed a comma in a sentence or not. Sometimes it was obvious, but it seems more confusing most of the time.
“Man is an animal that lives in language as a fish lives in water and so written communication is just one of the ways that man can survive through” (English scholar Annie Dillard). Writing is a skill to give information. Like all skills, it is not inborn and so it needs to be learnt. To give information you need good communication skills including the ability to write simply, clearly and concisely (Harris & Cunningham, 1996).
My developing self-knowledge of what a writer really consists of now will immensely influence the way I teach writing to my future students Students today who are learning skills of reading and writing need to be surrounded by enthusiastic, literate teachers and educators (Loane & Muir, 2017).
Before taking English 1A, I was a discouraged writer because as an English learner, I did not believe that I had any ability to be an acceptable writer. Therefore, I did not have any joy while I was doing writing assignments. However, I have gradually loved writing through this semester. I fortunately got plenty of helps from my classmates and professor; thus, my writing skills have gotten improved a lot. I currently can feel that writing is a quite enjoyable process, and I like delivering my ideas to other people by writing, too. I am really proud that I have enhanced my pre-writing skills, writing structure and revising skills and have learned how to write an effective thesis statement and how to deal with rhetorical analysis. However, I still have lots of deficiencies in my articles, such as grammar problem and the lack of logical transition.
