Growth is an inevitable part of life where things are constantly changing before our eyes even realize. I started off this semester dreading this class because I wasn’t so sure whether I can handle all the work that was on the syllabus. I did not really enjoy writing essays, unless it was about a topic I could relate to that makes me enjoy writing about it. Throughout the semester, we were asked to write three different types of essays which I was able to really grow as a writer. Each essay required lots of time, patience, solid ideas, and quality effort to make an essay that was done to the best of my abilities and was proud to turn in. I learned many new approaches and skills to improve my writing such as making sure I am making sense with the supporting details I used, have a strong body paragraph that connects to my topic sentence and relates to my thesis. …show more content…
Although, I was able to grow and improve as a writer this semester, I feel that there is still a lot for me to learn and room for me to continue growing using these techniques I’ve learned from this class. These academic techniques will help me in the future in my education, career and in life to be successfully educated wherever life takes me. I’m strongly finishing this English class, but this isn’t the last time I’m going to be using the techniques I’ve learned from this course. I can still apply these techniques to papers and other class assignments in other courses dealing with writing. One technique I have learned that I can apply to my other classes is revision. My development as a writer has flourished throughout this semester. The first week of this fall semester started out with writing responses from our readings in the textbook. Looking back through and analyzing my reading responses at the semester to now; I noticed a substantial improvement in not only my grammar skills, but also my summarizing, and in-depth studying of writing adeptness. Another way I have progressed this semester is the vocabulary of my writing has significantly improved and become more scholarly. Another advancement I noticed was that the content of my work has matured, along with my organizational adeptness.
As a student, I have learned many different skills that I will take with me throughout my journey from this course. We have traversed many different types of writing styles, which any college student, or any person for that
My relationship with writing has been much like roller coaster.Some experiences I had no control over. Other experiences were more influential. Ultimately it wasn’t until I started reading not because I had to read but because I wanted to, that's when my relationship reached change. I would have probably never cared about writing as I do today if it weren't for the critics in my family. When I was a child, my aunts and uncles always been in competition with who's child is better in school. I have always hated reading and writing because of the pressure to prove my family wrong was overwhelming for me. I had to prove them wrong and show them that I was capable of being "smart" which according to them was getting straight A's in all your classes.
Throughout this semester we have had to write many types of essays. Although this is a college English class there is still room for improvement. I made much improvement during the semester of the class. I was able to identify my weaknesses. I learned how to make improvements to the areas I was having problems in. Although each essay we did was different I was able to begin with one essay and throughout the semester turn it into two other essays. I was able to change my style of writing to fit the type of audience I was working with. I will continue to work on my writing and keep improving it.
Writing has incessantly been a struggle throughout my short life. Within writing, everyone possesses the entirety of tools needed to produce greatness, but many lack in the manufacturing of the product. You may have the greatest ideas for novels and short stories, though be unable to truly express yourself within the confines of only words. This precise issue faces me on a daily basis. All these exceptional visions spinning in my mind, yet I have not been able to master the art of putting these visions onto paper. However, I do admit I have grown as a writer over this single semester, and have major goals set for myself, not only as a writer but also in my career field.
As writers, many students write to the expectations of their professors and not to their fullest potential. Throughout English 101 I had been writing only to please my professor or to fill the basic requirement to pass English. I always felt that my writing ability was never enough for my professors throughout the previous years. They always wanted clear and concise essays, which for some reason was unreachable by me. However, starting college and taking English 101 helped me with my weaknesses and changed my technique of writing essays. My experience in English 101 taught me to write to my fullest potential and to write what I felt; rather then writing what was required.
Writing essays was never my forte, it just never came easy to me like it would to others. Since other subjects came easy to me and I had to focus more than others on writing, I had a negative attitude toward the process as a whole. During this summer semester, I was able to grow as a writer, and gain a more positive attitude toward how I write and a better feel for writing in college. Writing a paper is a process in which there are many different stages. In high school I would never write outlines or any sort of pre planning work. Other struggles I encountered in my writing were my theses, and framing quotes.
Throughout this semester I have learned many ways of writing through two main essays literacy narrative and comparison and contrast. These two essays have taught me how to correctly fix my comma splices, thesis statements, and capitalization. I have engaged in numerous learning material during this summer class. Many times when I thought it would be hard to work on those three developments I never gave up. I gain more positive feedback from my teacher because he pointed out most of my mistakes I made on both literacy narrative and comparison and contrast essays to help me understand what is it that I need to work on. My development as a writer became stronger.
The essay “Revising” by Joseph Harris outlines the importance of revision in the processes of writing any composition. In his words, revising is “rethinking, refining, and developing” the ideas and approach used in one's writing. Despite the importance of revision, the processes is often obscure to inexperienced writers because it is not immediately visible in a finished work. This makes it easy to believe that the final product is the result of a single draft rather than a long sequence of revisions.
I believe it is important for any student who wants to do their best in a class to take a moment to evaluate their own work to determine the rate their writing is progressing and how they can continue to advance their writing. When I looked through my own work I asked myself “what have I learned this semester?” and “what do I still need to learn in order to improve my writing?”. Answering both these questions will help me with my last step of my self-evaluation, developing a plan to learn new skills.
Throughout the year there have been many ups and downs, mistakes, and accomplishments. Because of these events people can grow as writers and can learn more about the world around them through this media. Over the year I have shown that I have been on both sides of the spectrum of great to unorthodox.
I am not the kind of person who talks or writes much. Putting my thoughts on papers is something I have always struggled with doing. I believe this class will help me improve on transferring my thoughts to paper, in an organized fashion. I look forward to becoming a better writer because of this class.
Over the course of the semester, I feel that I have grown as a writer in many ways. When I came into the class, there were skills I had that I already excelled at. During my time in class, I have come to improve on those skills even more. Before I took this class, I didn’t even realise what I was good at. This is the first class where I felt I received feedback on my writing that helped me to actually review my work to see what areas I lacked in and where I succeeded.
Winston Churchill once stated “To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often.” During my time here at English 180 I saw some improvement in my writing in terms of content. I feel as if I am more capable of writing an essay with better content than I was able to do back in High School. My essays have shown improvement because I did change my style of writing a bit and I added something different every time I wrote a paper. In English 180 we wrote several papers, but each one had a change to fit the certain criteria. Winston Churchill’s quote perfectly describes the purpose of the class English 180. Writing different pieces with a different format and branching out was key in the subjects of our writing assignments.
In this class, I have learned many things not only about different college and career pathways but about myself as well. I used to be clueless about what I want to be when I grew up. I didn't know what path to take despite my sibling already know what path they want to take. So in this class, I finally learned how much writing played a part in my life. It never occurred to me that I could make a career out of something I thought of as a hobby. I learned that I wanted to pursue writing and include it in my future. Before a career though, I needed to pass high school. Having a sister already in high school, I knew most of the information about credits and grade point averages. My parents would tell me to take classes that could help me with my career but I didn't know what career I wanted to pursue which ultimately led back to box one of finding out what I wanted to be.
